CHAPTER 28

YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO FIND THE TRUTH.

OR ASHLEY DIES.

I stared at the words on the screen, my heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears.

“What the hell does that mean?” I whispered.

Dominic didn’t answer.

He was already moving.

His eyes scanned the room, searching every corner, every camera, every possible entrance.

“Dominic?”

“Stay close to me.”

His voice was low and controlled, but I could hear the tension beneath it.

“Five minutes,” he muttered.

“Five minutes for what?”

CHAPTER 28YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO FIND THE TRUTH.OR ASHLEY DIES.I stared at the words on the screen, my heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears.“What the hell does that mean?” I whispered.Dominic didn’t answer. He was already moving. His eyes scanned the room, searching every corner, every camera, every possible entrance.“Dominic?”“Stay close to me.”His voice was low and controlled, but I could hear the tension beneath it.“Five minutes,” he muttered.“Five minutes for what?”“To find whatever he wants us to find.”I looked back at the screen. The countdown had already appeared.04:37My breath caught.“There’s a timer.”“I see it.”04:29“Then what are we supposed to find?”Dominic turned toward me.“The truth.”I almost laughed from frustration.“That’s helpful.”He ignored my sarcasm and moved toward the table where we had found the metal box.I followed him as quickly as I could.“What was inside the box?”“The memory card.”“Then maybe that’s what we’re suppose

CHAPTER 27The last thing I saw was Dominic diving after me.Then everything went black.I didn’t even have enough time to scream before my body plunged into the darkness. The fall felt endless.Cold air rushed violently against my face as my wheelchair tumbled beneath me. I tried desperately to grab onto something, anything, but there was nothing.Only darkness.Only the terrifying feeling of falling.ThenBang! My body slammed against something hard.Pain shot through my side immediately.A cry escaped my lips as I rolled across the cold surface before finally coming to a stop. For several seconds, I couldn’t move.I couldn’t even breathe properly. My heart hammered wildly inside my chest as I tried to understand what had just happened.Where was I?What had happened to Dominic?“Dominic?”My voice came out weak.No answer.Panic immediately took over.“Dominic!”Still nothing. My hands trembled as I tried to push myself up.“Dominic!”A groan suddenly came from somewhere nearby. My

CHAPTER 25“They’ve entered Raven’s Pass.”Patrick’s voice echoed through the radio on the other end.“Prepare the welcome.”The transmission ended.Deep within the forest, silence returned.I had never seen a place like Raven’s Pass before. The narrow trail wound between two towering cliffs that rose so high they almost swallowed the sky. Thick vines crawled over ancient stone walls, while twisted tree roots forced their way through cracks in the rocks as if nature itself had claimed this forgotten place centuries ago.The deeper Dominic pushed my wheelchair into the pass, the darker it became.Even though it was still early evening, barely any sunlight reached the ground.Cold air brushed against my skin.It felt…Wrong.Like the forest itself was watching us.I wrapped my arms around myself.“Dominic…”He didn’t stop scanning our surroundings.“Hm?”“Have you ever been here before?”He hesitated.“Once.”I looked up at him.“With who?”“My mother.”That answer caught me by surprise

CHAPTER 25A second whistle echoed through the forest. Then…A third. The sound drifted between the towering pine trees like a predator calling its pack.Dominic’s face hardened instantly.“We’re leaving.”He gripped the handles of my wheelchair and pushed it forward at a speed I didn’t think was possible over the uneven forest floor.Branches slapped against our faces.Roots threatened to overturn the wheelchair every few feet.Still…He never slowed.“Dominic…”I struggled to keep my voice steady.“Who are they?”“They’re Patrick’s Shadow Unit.”“The Shadow Unit?”“The men he sends when failure isn’t an option.”A chill ran through me.“You mean…”“They don’t arrest people.”His voice remained frighteningly calm.“They erase them.”Several hundred meters behind us…Five figures emerged silently from the trees.Unlike the men Dominic had fought earlier…These hunters wore matte black combat suits that blended perfectly into the darkness.Night vision goggles covered their eyes.Silen

Chapter 24Patrick Walker’s words refused to leave my mind.“The forest… is exactly where I wanted them to go.”They echoed over and over inside my head like a warning.I stared at Dominic.“You heard what he said.”“I did.”“He wanted us here.”Dominic didn’t answer immediately.Instead, he slowly removed the magazine from his pistol and counted the remaining bullets.Seven.Only seven. He slid it back into place with practiced ease.“We keep moving.”His voice was calm.Too calm. That alone told me how dangerous our situation really was.“If Patrick planned this…”I swallowed.“…then doesn’t that mean we’re walking into a trap?”Dominic finally looked at me.“It does.”My heart sank.“But standing still is an even bigger trap.”The forest grew darker as evening approached.Towering pine trees blocked what little sunlight remained. The air smelled of wet earth and moss.Every snapping twig made me jump.Every gust of wind sounded like footsteps.Dominic pushed my wheelchair carefully

Chapter 23“The forest… is exactly where I wanted them to go.”Patrick’s words lingered in my mind long after we had escaped. The deeper Dominic carried me into the forest, the quieter everything became. No gunfire. No explosions.Only the sound of rain dripping from towering pine trees and the occasional crack of branches beneath Dominic’s boots. His breathing had become heavier.I noticed it immediately. The wound on his arm had bled through the bandage I tied only minutes ago.Dark crimson stained the sleeve of his jacket once again.“Dominic.”“I’m fine.”“You’ve said that at least ten times today.”“I’m still fine.”I sighed.“Liar.”For the first time…A tiny smile appeared on his face.“So I’ve been told.”I couldn’t help smiling back.It disappeared almost as quickly as it came.Another thirty minutes passed. The rain gradually eased into a light drizzle.Dominic suddenly stopped walking. His eyes swept across the trees. His expression changed.“What is it?”He didn’t answer.
