Sophie’s POV

Derek's expression shifted. I could see him recalibrating, adjusting to the version of me that was sitting in that chair, which was a version of me he had never seen before and clearly did not know what to do with.

His eyes were sharp and waiting, like he expected the conditions to be small and manageable. Like he expected me to ask for money or a bigger room or some other thing he could dismiss easily.

I looked him straight in the eyes.

Sophie’s POVI blinked.I blinked again, waiting for the room to change, waiting to wake up in the penthouse with Ares’s arm still around me. This had to be a dream. It did not feel like a dream. The chair was hard under me. Ares’s hand had gone tight around mine. The doctor’s watch made a small sound when he set his wrist on the desk.“What?” I said. The doctor turned one of the scans toward us. “There is no mass in your brain. There are no cancerous cells. Nothing on these images matches the diagnosis you were given.”I shook my head. “That’s impossible.”“I understand why it feels that way.”“No.” My voice rose. “I got the symptoms. I got blinding migraines for a long while, even before the diagnosis. I was dizzy. I went pale. I felt like my head was splitting open. A doctor told me I was dying.”Ares had gone

Sophie’s POVAres moved so fast I barely saw it.He stepped in front of me, his body between mine and the camera. One of his hands came back to my hip, holding me behind him. The other shot out and grabbed the camera. The man swore. Ares ripped it from his hands and smashed it on the ground. The lens cracked. Plastic scattered across the pavement. The sound was ugly and final. The woman stumbled back, eyes wide.“Stay away from us,” Ares said. His voice was low and cold. “If you come near her again, if you print her name again, if you put a camera in her face again, I will end whatever little career you think you have. Do you understand me?”She looked shocked. The man stared at the broken camera like he could not believe it was his. A piece of the lens lay near my shoe. I did not pick it up. I did not look at them again.Ares did not wait for an answer. He turned, wrapped an arm around my shoulder

  • Ex-Husband's Regret: Your Uncle Wants Me Now   CHAPTER 114

Sophie’s POVThe next day, Ares and I prepared to visit the oncologist.I woke before him, or maybe I never really slept. The penthouse was quiet in that deep way high places sometimes are, with the city held back behind glass and the only sound the low hum of air moving through the vents. City light still clung to the edges of the curtains, pale and thin, not quite morning and not quite night. I lay on my side and watched the slow rise of his chest. His arm was heavy across my waist. Even in sleep, he held me like he was afraid I might slip away if he loosened his grip. His fingers were curled into the fabric of my shirt. Every few minutes he shifted closer, as if some part of him was still keeping watch.I studied his face in the half-light. The line of his jaw. The faint crease between his brows that had not fully smoothed even in sleep. I thought about the night before, about the way he had cried when I told him, about the way he had packed my bags himself and driven me out of tha

Sophie’s POVHe took my hand and led me back through the house to my room. I could feel how tightly he was holding himself together. Every few steps he looked at me, like he needed to make sure I was still walking beside me and not disappearing. In my room, he opened the closet himself.“Only what you want,” he said. “If you leave it, I’ll replace it. You’re not staying here because of clothes. You’re not staying here for them.”I packed only the clothes he had bought for me. The cream dress. The green one. The soft things that still smelled a little like the hotel in Italy. I left behind almost everything else. Those things belonged to a life where I had been small and unwanted and waiting to die. I did not want to take that version of myself into his home.Ares carried the bags. When we walked back through the house, I did not look toward Shirley’s wing. I did not look for Derek. I kept my eyes on Ares’s back and the door ahead of us.He put me in the car and drove. The mansion fell

Sophie’s POVThe words landed so softly they still knocked the air out of me.He kept going, like now that he had started he could not stop. “I could have left the day they read my father’s wishes. I had my own places. My own life. I stayed because you were here. Because every time I looked at you, I saw a woman this family had decided to starve of care. Because I watched you sit at that table and make yourself small, and it made me furious. Because I could not walk away from you.”His voice broke on the last part.“I am falling hopelessly in love with you, Sophie. I think I have been for longer than I wanted to admit. I tried to be patient. I tried to go slow. And then I had you, and I heard you laugh, and I watched you sleep, and it was already too late. I am in love with you.”His words brought tears to my eyes at once. Not just because they were beautiful.Because I had not been completely honest with him.I had let him hold me. I had let him kiss me. I had let him bury himself in

Sophie’s POVMy palm hit her cheek with the same force she had used on me. Shirley’s head turned. Her eyes went wide. She looked shocked, like she could not believe I had dared to touch her.Lana looked shocked too. Then furious.“You ugly little bitch,” Lana hissed. “You put your hands on my mother?”She raised her hand to hit me.“Touch her,” a voice said from down the hall, “and you lose your hand.”Lana froze. We all turned.Ares was standing at the end of the hallway. He must have come back sooner than I thought. Or maybe someone had told him. I did not know. I only knew that the look on his face made the air change. He was not shouting. He did not need to.He walked toward us slowly, every step controlled, his eyes locked on Lana’s raised hand until she lowered it. When he reached us, he moved slightly in front of me, not enough to hide me, just enough to make it clear I was not standing there alone anymore.“Never touch her again,” he said. His voice was low and cold. “Do not r
