Third Person POV

Carl sat rigidly at his small table in the mall cafeteria, his fingers gripping the edge so tightly that his knuckles turned white. His lunch sat untouched on the tray before him, a neat stack of tacos and fruit that he had no appetite for.

Why was he here? He didn’t want to go shopping this with stupid woman that lived in his house. There was something about her that he didn’t like, although, in his six year mind, he couldn’t quite place what it was.

He wanted to be Willow, his mom. But Willow hadn’t come over today. She was busy with work. So, this other woman, Giulia, had offered to take him to the mall. When he refused, she basically told him he had to. He knew better than to argue with adults. That was disrespectful. That’s what Uncle Luigi always said.

So he’d been forced to go.

It was boring though. And now he wanted to go home. The mall was too busy, too loud, and he was starting to feel nervous. Willow understood when he felt like this. He didn’t even need to

  • Ex and Son Beg, But I Never Turn Back   Chapter 109: I’d Rather Be With You

Willow’s POVThe night air was crisp as I stepped out of the ballroom. The city’s lights sparkled like a scattered constellation. My heart was heavy, and I drew in a steadying breath, letting the cool wind wash over me.It would be all right. Everything would be all right, I said to calm myself as my heels clicked sharply against the cement sidewalk.I’d barely started looking for a cab when I heard a voice call out my name. I turned to see Luigi, rushing towards me.“What are you doing?” I asked him.“Going home with you,” he said, just as his personal driver pulled up. “I made a loud excuse that I wasn’t feeling well, loud enough for other people to hear. I can’t bear the thought of being there with her. I want to be with you.”He’d left the party for me?“You did well there,” he said. “I know you were just as shocked as I was.”I shook her head, exhaling sharply. “I didn’t do well. I felt…humiliated. I felt like I didn’t even exist.”Luigi’s hand brushed briefly against my elbow. “I

Willow’s POVEventually, they left the stage, and I watched as Giulia made her way across the ballroom floor. The hem of her dress swayed as she walked. She clung to Luigi’s arm, tilting her head just so, allowing the cameras to catch them as ‘the picture perfect couple.’ Click. Flash. Click. Flash. The photographers were relentless, and for a moment I felt sick to my stomach. Leaning against a marble column, I forced myself to remain calm. I told myself over and over that Luigi had no choice in this. His family was the most important thing to him, and Giulia had orchestrated the whole thing without him knowing. He was as innocent in all of this as I was.My gaze followed Giulia. It didn’t help that she was drop dead gorgeous and so confident. The tilt of her shoulder, the way she brushed the hair from her face in a calculated move, the glimmering of her large diamond earrings. And those cheekbones! The woman was a veritable goddess, making me feel like some country hick in compari

Willow’s POVOne week later…The ballroom glittered as if a thousand stars had fallen inside. Glancing around the room, I felt my stomach twist into knots.Luigi had begged me to come tonight, despite the chaos of the past week. He’d called me that morning and explained that his marriage to Guilia had been fake, at best, and extremely short-lived. They’d grown up together, and there had been a short time when he thought he loved her, but he hadn’t. He’d been young and foolish, and when he moved to the United States, he hadn’t finalized the divorce. He assured me that he’d been after her all the week previous to the perfume competition. Then he explained the situation with his family winery.“She’s trying to manipulate me. That’s the type of person she is. But please, Willow. You have nothing to worry about. You’ll hardly see her at all. You and I will just continue on as usual. My hands are tied. Please understand.”My heart had softened at his words. I’d decided to try, for Luigi and

Luigi’s POVWatching Willow rush out of the kitchen, my heart clenched. I raked my hands through my hair and then turned to Guilia, my anger rising.Willow’s retreating footsteps echoed softly down the hallway, signaling that she was leaving. The moment the door closed, the air seemed to thicken. Guilia smiled at my coyly over the rim of her coffee as she took a sip.“She’s pretty,” she remarked, a hint of mockery in her voice.“Why are you here?” I demanded, my voice low but edged with controlled fury. “I asked for a divorce years ago! And you just show up out of the blue? What the hell, Guilia.”Giulia turned slowly, a teasing smile on her lips. “I’ve missed you,” she said, taking a step closer, her heels tapping lightly against the hardwood floor, deliberate and poised. “You are my husband, after all.”My jaw clenched and I flexed my hands as I struggled to maintain my calm. Things between Guilia and I hadn’t ended well. We’d gotten married when we were really young, too young. It

Willow’s POVFrozen in spot, I stared at the beautiful woman standing before me.Did she just say wife? But how was that possible?MY hand lingered on the doorknob, my mind spinning. This couldn’t be. There was no way Luigi had a wife. And yet, there she was. This woman with sharp poise, dressed simply yet elegantly, suitcase in hand and a look on her face that said she had every right to be there. My stomach twisted.“My name is Guilia” the woman said while my mind still reeled. Her her voice was calm, smooth, almost casual. “Mind if I come in?”My mouth went dry. “I…I’m…not sure…” I stammered, my heart hammering as the woman stepped forward and into the foyer. She looked around, set down her suitcase, and then walked towards the kitchen, her high heels clicking against the hardwood floor.I hesitated, then followed her.In the kitchen, her eyes scanning the framed photographs on the wall, landing on the coffee machine. “Cozy,” she said, almost benignly, and I felt a spark of fury fli
