Chapter 2

Author: Dyeing
My heart sank, but before I could process the situation, the anesthesia took effect, and I sank into deep unconsciousness.

I'd thought that after three years, I'd long since stopped caring about the past. Yet in my dreams, I still found myself back in the villa owned by the Sullivans—the place that felt like hell on earth to me.

When I was seven years old, I'd been kidnapped. By the time Fiona found me, I was already 17 years old.

In those ten years, Fiona had to live through both my disappearance and our parents' unexpected deaths. The successive blows drove her into a breakdown. She developed severe depression and attempted to take her own life several times.

Her therapist advised her to find herself another brother, and that's how Zach came into her life as her adopted brother.

Zach was three years younger than me. He was an expert at wrapping Fiona around his little finger.

I'd returned to the family when Fiona and Zach's relationship had been at its best.

She kept warning me, "Caleb, Zach has a heart condition and can't handle any emotional distress. Keep your distance from him and don't provoke him.

"He's been by my side all these years. Although I can't send him away, don't worry. You're still my only younger brother."

I knew Fiona hadn't had an easy life either, so I put up with everything and tried not to make things difficult for her. But behind her back, Zach bared his fangs at me.

During the Sullivan family's gatherings, he said I was a country bumpkin and used that as an excuse to convince Fiona to leave me at home. He took away all of the gifts everyone gave to me.

Whenever I protested, he'd clutch his chest and complain that he felt unwell.

Once that happened enough times, Fiona began to express her disappointment in me.

"These are all just trivial matters! Must you go this far? Zach has a heart condition! Are you trying to kill him?"

Time and time again, I tried to just put up with Zach's schemes. Then one day, he "accidentally" knocked over the soup I made for Fiona.

It wasn't a big deal, but it was the final straw that ignited all of my grievances and rage.

"Fiona's feeling unwell because of all the business dinners she'd had to attend! Since you can't be of any help, you should at least avoid causing trouble!"

So, I punched Zach. The next second, he clutched his chest and collapsed to the floor. I would never forget the cold, menacing look Fiona gave me that day. All she said to me then was, "When I get back, I'm going to make you pay for this!"

She took Zach to the hospital, and I was a nervous wreck the entire night. Early the next morning, she came home and handed me my passport, along with a flight ticket.

"Zach had a heart attack—a serious one. You can't stay in this house anymore. Go to Ashberia and cool off for a couple of days."

I stared at her in disbelief. "If you send me away, I'll never acknowledge you as my sister again!"

Her expression darkened. Without giving me a choice, she dragged me straight to the airport.

"Ever since you came back, you've done nothing but cause trouble for me. You really think you can act like some spoiled rich brat now? If you can't get that temper of yours under control, don't bother coming back!

"I may be able to clean up your messes for you while you're here in Seagrove, but once you're abroad, no one is going to care about you!"

Even when I was about to board the plane, I still couldn't believe Fiona was actually abandoning me like this.

I stood ramrod straight and stubbornly repeated myself. "I didn't do anything wrong! If you send me away, I will never consider you my sister again!"

She pursed her lips and put an end to every last bit of hope I had.

"So be it. I don't care if you never acknowledge me as your sister again. You're going to Ashberia!"

After only returning to the Sullivan family for a year, I was shipped abroad to one of the most impoverished places on earth. It was a fate even worse than being kidnapped.

I couldn't even bring myself to recall what life had been like for me the past three years.

…

I woke with a jolt to find an intern doctor beside me. With a scalpel in hand, he said in a sympathetic voice, "All of the specialists in the hospital were summoned away by someone named Fiona Sullivan. She donated 100 million dollars to the hospital, so…"

When I opened my eyes, someone asked me to introduce myself. I said my name was Caleb Murray. I was a Havenese living in Ashberia. I worked as a war correspondent covering the conflict in the impoverished neighborhoods there, and Alice was my sister.I'd been injured while saving two children and had to return to Havenia for treatment. However, by the time I received treatment, it was too late to save my right leg, and it had to be amputated. I'd also lost hearing in one ear, and my right index finger had been broken at some point. It trembled hard each time I tried to use it.I was now disabled, but thankfully, Alice was the greatest sister a person could have. She said she loved me no matter what happened to me.I'd been fitted with a prosthetic leg, and she helped me with my rehabilitation exercises every day. Whenever I was drenched in sweat from the pain, she'd furrow her brows so tightly that she seemed to be suffering even more than I was. That thought amused me. After all,

Alice threw Fiona out of the hospital and had Zach shipped off to Ashberia. Once peace returned to the hospital, she sat beside me and comforted me softly."I'll hire the best lawyers to sue Fiona. As for your leg, I'll think of something, too."I smiled bitterly. What else could be done? I could only put on a prosthetic leg and do my best to act like a normal person.Joseph and Hank held my hands, one on each side. "Don't cry, Cal!"They blew gently on the stump that was once my right leg, doing what I used to do for them. "If we blow, no pain!"My heart ached terribly. I didn't want to cry in front of them, but I couldn't stop the tears from rolling down my cheeks.I was now a disabled man. I would never be able to run or jump freely again. There were even many sports I would no longer be able to do.Alice seemed to know what I was thinking. Her voice softened as she said, "It's okay. At least you're still alive, right? As long as you're alive, there's still hope."Those were

"But what about the results he got from all those tests they ran at the hospital…" Fiona stared blankly at the report, her fingers trembling. "They check his heart every year. I've seen the results myself."She glared coldly at Alice. "You're just lying, aren't you? You forged this report!"Alice could no longer hold herself back. She raised her hand and slapped Fiona hard across the face. The force of the blow sent Fiona crashing to the floor.Gritting her teeth in disbelief, Fiona tried to get up and hit Alice back, only to hear Alice sneer at her."You donated 100 million to this hospital under Caleb's name. What makes you think he can't produce any kind of test results that he wants? "Fiona, you're the stupidest person alive. Not only are you blind, but you're also the biggest fool. To think you'd cause so much pain and suffering to your own brother for the sake of your so-called adopted brother. Well? Did the slap knock some sense back into your head?"Alice had a lot more

Everyone froze, while I collapsed back onto the gurney like a deflated balloon. It was Alice. She was here.Frowning, Fiona turned around. The moment she saw Alice, her expression darkened.Alice frequently appeared in the news abroad. There was no way Fiona wouldn't recognize her. She stepped in front of me warily and asked, "Who are you calling your brother?"It only took Alice a quick shove to get Fiona out of the way. Once she saw me, her jaw dropped in shock. And when she saw my missing right leg, her eyes reddened at once."Who did it? Tell me who did this to you!"Two children rushed out from behind her and crowded around me, saying in broken Havenese, "Cal… Hurt?"Seeing their faces, I felt as though blood had begun flowing through my hollow heart again. I wanted to smile at them and tell them it didn't hurt. But when I opened my mouth, all that came out was a sob, my voice broken beyond recognition."It hurts so much. It really hurts."…Alice and I met in the impover

It felt as though something had exploded inside my head. I felt like a child who hadn't learned to process words yet. I could no longer understand what Fiona was saying. She clutched my hand, her eyes red-rimmed."There aren't any donor hearts available. Just agree to this one thing for me, and I'll forget about everything you did in the past, okay? You're the reason why Zach is suffering from this condition. We owe him this!"I'll get you an artificial heart. Once the surgery is over, we'll go home. I'll send him away, alright? Please, Caleb!"I thought my heart had already died, but as it turned out, this was the moment the death knell truly began to toll. I stared blankly at the ceiling, my pupils unfocused. A constant buzzing filled my ears, and I couldn't make out a single thing.A moment later, a pen was shoved between my fingers. Someone grabbed my hand and pressed it against the consent form for voluntary heart donation. I instinctively struggled, but no matter how hard I

I threw a fit, screaming at the top of my lungs while struggling with all my might. I even rolled onto the floor, trying to crawl away. But the medical staff restrained me and forced me into the operating room anyway. They injected me with anesthesia. When I regained consciousness, my right leg was already gone.As I stared at the stump where my thigh ended, my mind went completely blank. There was nothing left.Someone was talking beside me, but I couldn't hear a word. I could only think of one thing—why hadn't that artillery shell killed me outright? Why had I been allowed to survive, only to end up crippled? It wasn't until the hospital room door opened again and Fiona walked in with Zach that my eyes slowly regained focus. I fixed my gaze on the two of them.Fiona's eyes flashed with sympathy. "Caleb, don't be too upset. I'll get you the best prosthetic leg money can buy. Once you've recovered, I'll take you home. The three of us can go on a trip together."Zach's eyes immedi
