Chapter 2 More Slander

Author: Sugar-free Americano
The next morning, I found an A4 paper stuck to my room's door. "Stay away from Blake and stop embarrassing the journalism She's shared her food with me several times.."

The paper was signed off by all the girls in journalism. I tore the paper down and flipped it over. Blank. I could use it for my notes.

I sat in the last row for my morning class. The students in front of me moved three rows ahead, as if I was a walking source of plague.

Molly Riverson, Jessica's sycophant, went around and placed a drink on my table. "Jessica's treat."

"No, thank you."

Molly said in a low voice, "She said she'll make sure things die down if you post an apology on the forum today."

"Apologize for what?"

"For being inappropriate toward Blake."

"Our relationship is completely normal. There's nothing inappropriate about it."

Molly sighed. "The chat history is out, and the whole campus has seen it. No one will believe you even if you deny it. Just give in."

I slid the drink back. "I'll do it… if she can give me my accolade back."

Molly took the drink and went away.

I went to the cafeteria for lunch, but I didn't have enough money. Jessica had handed Blake's card over to the student government as evidence. I only had 47 dollars left on my card, and there were 19 days left this month.

That meant I could only spend 2.50 every day.

I got myself a plate of plain pasta and sat in a quiet corner. Natalie Zimmer, my roommate, shared half her food with me, assuming that I had run out of allowance. Well, she wasn't exactly wrong. "Have some of mine."

"Nah. I'm on a diet."

"You're only 99 pounds!" she exclaimed in dismay.

"I'd like to be light enough to be blown away by the wind. If I could, I could say goodbye to this place," I muttered.

I went to the student government that afternoon to get the card, and Jessica was sorting out the files. She looked at me coolly. "I can't give you the card right now."

"My allowance is in there."

"And the card is Blake's." She held up the card. "We can't give it to you until he confirms it."

"You have no right to confiscate it," I retorted.

Jessica put the card in the drawer. "We're protecting Blake's financial security. After all, what if you really are extorting him?"

She sounded so righteous and calm, as if she was just commenting on the weather, as if she was the victim, as if I was a dangerous figure she had to be on guard against.

I yanked the drawer, but Jessica grabbed my hand. "Are you seriously going to snatch it? There are three student council members outside. Do it, and you'll be punished tomorrow."

I ripped my hand away. Her nail left a red mark on the back of my hand.

"Blake will be back in two days after the competition is over. You'll ask him for the card then. I'll give the card back to you if he says that he gave it to you."

She opened the door, smiling. "But if he doesn't, I'll propose to the board to cancel all your nominations for any accolades this term."

I walked out of the office and looked at the red mark on my hand. The student council members saw her slam my hand down, but none of them thought she was in the wrong. To them, I was a gold digger, so what Jessica did was justice in their eyes.

I went through my contacts. My parents were on an overseas business trip, and we had a 12-hour difference between us. My grandmother had no idea how to use smartphones, and Blake was still MIA.

A new post appeared on the forum.

"Diving Deep into Yvonne the Gold Digger. Swipes Blake's Card on Designer Goods in Freshman Year. Suspected of Living in his Place Long-term."

The photo was of me in the jacket Blake tossed, and I was coming out of his apartment complex. The photo was taken at a specific angle, and the lighting was dim. It made me look like a gold digger who frequented upscale residential areas late at night.

The latest comment read, "And she's still not expelled? She's going to derail everyone!"

I turned my phone face down.

Last month, my grandmother called Blake and told him to take care of me. He didn't hesitate to agree, saying, "Of course, Mom. I'll treat her like she's my own daughter!"

Well, his darling daughter couldn't afford lunch because her card was confiscated. Even worse, her reputation was in tatters. Thanks so much for taking care of me, Uncle Blake.

"Get me a box of milk, then. The one Grandma likes," I said."No. We brought three boxes back last time, and she still hasn't finished those," Blake shot my idea down before it could even fly."That's two months ago!""And she's going through them alone.""She won't be when I'm there," I shot back.Blake fell silent. "This will be coming out of your own pocket," he finally said."But my pockets are empty!""I give you an allowance every month.""It ran out.""It's only the 15th," he replied dryly."I treated Natalie to a feast. It was your treat, remember? You said so."Blake took a deep breath, and Venmo'd me 500 right then and there. "Is that enough?""Yep.""Just get two boxes of milk.""Got it.""And don't swipe my card for your snacks.""Don't throw your clothes at me, then. My wardrobe's not your trash bin," I grumbled."I couldn't wear that jacket. I wasn't throwing it to you.""You said you looked fat in it.""Because I did.""You're 154 pounds at 6'2". Even

I got an email from Academic Affairs next Wednesday afternoon."Yvonne Clayton, we have reinstated your nomination for the accolades after the investigation. Please attend the reissuing ceremony this Friday afternoon."The ceremony was a lot smaller than the first one. There were no big screens, no 2,000-person spectacle. There was only a conference room, the dean, and some professors. Still, the process was done in full. The dean gave me the certificate and prize himself. "We apologize for our oversight in this case, Yvonne."I accepted the certificate. "Thank you, sir."The dean added, "Your previous advisor has been reassigned. A new advisor will be assigned to your class."I nodded but said nothing. I didn't linger after the ceremony was over. When I did, I immediately spotted Blake, who had been waiting for me outside the building. He was leaning against the tree, holding two drinks. "Got it?""Got it." I held up the certificate. He looked at it and nodded. "Sure. Take a

Monday morning came. The investigation team wanted to talk to Jessica. Natalie got the news from the student council. There were three people on the team: Duncan, someone from internal oversight, and the advisor for the faculty of finance. The conversation's content wasn't made public, but an announcement was made on the campus' official site that afternoon. It was short, but it got the message across just fine."Regarding the Punishment for Jessica Shaw's Rulebreaking Conduct.""After due process, we have verified that: One, Jessica obtained Blake's chat history through illegal means while his phone was under safeguard during the competition. She then edited the snapshots and spread them across campus."Two, she abused her position on the student council and confiscated Blake's card. During said period, she also generated two expenditures using his card. "Three, she has handed in fake evidence and had Ms. Yvonne Clayton's nomination for the accolades canceled before due process

Blake got a call while we were having lunch. It was from Grandma. She went into a tirade right after he greeted her. She was so loud that I could hear her even when I was across from him."What is wrong with you? Your niece has been bullied for three days, and you ignored her?" she demanded angrily."I had to hand in my phone during the competition, Mom," he replied."You still have your legs, don't you? You could've come back to check on her!""It was a closed competition, Mom.""I don't give a damn what competition it was! You're coming home tomorrow, and that's final!" The call ended.Blake put his phone down and speared a piece of meat, his face resigned.I tentatively asked, "Is Grandma mad?""Not really.""Are you really going back tomorrow?""No. She'll shove her foot up my ass." He put a piece of meat on my plate. "Also, has your roommate been helping you? Natalie, I mean.""Yeah. She's shared her food with me several times.""Treat her to something good. Order anyt

Duncan took us into a conference room. There were more people inside my room. My advisor, Eric Zimmerson, the advisor for the finance faculty and Jessica. Blake sat with me.Jessica was across from us, her eyes puffy and her hands fisting some crumpled tissues. Duncan was the first to speak. "Can you prove that you're related to Blake, Yvonne?"Blake took his phone out and pulled up his family register. His sister's name was Melinda Landton. Then, he pulled up my family page. My mother's name was the same as his sister's.He then pulled up that family photo we took during the holidays last year. My grandmother was in the center, my parents were on the left, and Blake was on the right. I was crouched in the front row, hugging my grandmother's cat.Duncan checked them and fell silent. He turned to Eric. "You signed the file that canceled her nomination?"Eric had a stiff and awkward look on his face. "The court of public opinion was coming on hard, and the board wanted it to stay un

The plaza fell into dead silence, and then everything exploded."She's his niece?""But Blake's only in his third year, so how's his niece already a freshman?""His mother's probably an older woman. Wait, so that girl is his sister's daughter?"Jessica's smile was still there, but her eyes were blank with shock. Her mouth parted as she breathed, "What was that, Blake?"Blake didn't look at her. He took his phone out. He'd gotten it back after the competition and hadn't turned it on yet. He pressed the power button and waited for a while. His phone was flooded with texts the moment his screen lit up.The first one was mine. "Bad news, uncle. Your fangirl posted our chat history for everyone to see."He scrolled down, and the second came from my mother. "Blake, Yvonne told us she ran into trouble at school. Look into it. Her father and I are still overseas."The third one was a voice message my grandmother asked her neighbor to send. He didn't play it, but the tran alone told h
