Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
After hearing my words, my dad’s face darkened.

He reached out and pinched my cheek. “I believe you.”

With that, he turned and charged upstairs. That posture didn’t look like he was going to catch someone, but fight for his life.

Mary’s face went pale. When she failed to stop him, she could only stomp her foot and cry out, “Honey! The most important thing right now is sending our son to the hospital!”

However, my dad was someone who could tolerate anything except being cuckolded.

What was a son’s broken leg compared to his pride?

He didn’t look back and went straight upstairs.

Of course, he came up empty-handed. The man had already slipped away, but the unfamiliar scent of men’s cologne upstairs was so strong it was choking, lingering no matter what.

Mary, of course, came prepared. Her tears flowed instantly, and right there on the spot, she pulled a beautifully packaged bottle of men’s cologne from her bag and cried softly.

“Honey, I bought this especially for you. I wanted to surprise you…”

No one believed her excuse.

However, my dad had no evidence.

The ambulance arrived with a wail and took Ethan away. Before getting into the vehicle, Dad stared hard at Mary and squeezed out a few words through clenched teeth.

“If I find out some wild man caused my son’s leg to break, I’ll make sure his entire family pays!”

I was anxious but powerless, knowing how skilled and prepared Mary was. I couldn’t beat her head-on yet and could only wait for another chance.

At the hospital, Ethan cried in pain nonstop.

I immediately rushed to the bed, grabbed his little hand, and choked up. “Ethan, don’t cry. Your sister’s here.”

Maybe the fall had stunned him, or that my usual fake kindness had worked. He subconsciously leaned into me. “It was Lucy who saved me.”

My dad praised me from the side, calling me well-behaved.

However, when he saw Ethan’s leg wrapped in plaster, he couldn’t help sighing, muttering, “At least it didn’t cause more damage.”

With no evidence of who opened the yard gate, my dad could only keep a suspicious eye on Mary.

Mary, meanwhile, acted as gently and obediently as possible, insisting it was because the gate was old and had loosened on its own.

And just like that, the matter passed without much resolution.

After we returned home, Mary treated me unbelievably well. She personally cooked barbecue ribs for me, bought me pretty new dresses, and even tucked me in at night.

She was so gentle, as if I were her biological child.

Watching all this, my dad’s suspicion gradually faded. He probably thought that even if a woman had done something wrong, for the sake of the children and the family, she would eventually settle down.

But I knew better.

The more she acted like this, the more it proved she had a guilty conscience. She was desperate to wash the filth off herself, just so she could dump it back onto me later.

I was also waiting for her true colors to show.

Despite all my precautions and calculations, I still underestimated how vicious she was.

That weekend, early in the morning, Mary sent me back to my second-floor bedroom to do homework, while she pushed the sleeping Ethan out onto the second-floor balcony to get some sun.

I lifted my head from my workbook. The unease in my chest grew.

Sure enough, at the exact moment my dad pushed open the front door, a loud crash echoed from the stairwell, followed by Mary’s piercing scream.

“Ah! Lucy! How could you push Ethan?!”

My dad’s steps stopped abruptly. As he looked up, he saw me standing in the second-floor hallway, while Ethan, with his wheelchair, lay overturned at the bottom of the stairs on the first floor.

He couldn’t afford that humiliation.Instead, he pulled several of the toughest security guards from his company and sent them to Ben’s usual nightclub. They said the scene was more dramatic than any soap opera. When my father’s men arrived, Ben was surrounded by women, bragging about how he had wrapped a rich older woman arou

He roughly shoved Mary into the car and dragged me in, with a crippled Ethan placed in the back seat. The doors locked shut, sealing off all outside eyes.Inside, the car was deathly silent, broken only by my father’s heavy breathing. The vehicle suddenly surged forward, then screeched to a halt on an empty roadside.“Speak.” My father’s voice was squeezed out between clenched teeth. He stared at Mary as if he wanted to devour her alive.“What exactly have I done wrong to you? Didn’t give you enough money? Or was it because I couldn’t satisfy you? So you had to go find some lowlife punk outside?”Mary trembled violently, her face smeared with tears and snot. She reached out to grab my

Mary’s eyes were locked onto the report in the police officer’s hands, as if she wanted to burn a hole straight through it.She suddenly shrieked and pointed at the neighbors outside, who were still craning their necks to watch.“It was them! One of them must’ve touched the wheelchair! Officer, you can’t just check us. Test their fingerprints too!”The moment she said that, the yard fell completely silent. The neighbors who had just been speaking up for her all turned ugly-faced, retreating backward and waving their hands to distance themselves.“Hey, how can you talk like that? We never touched your wheelchair!”“Exactly! We just came to take a look, and this is how you repay kindness?”Mary’s pleading gaze turned toward Nancy, the neighbor she was closest to.Nancy’s face flushed red. When Dad’s icy gaze swept over her, she immediately shrank her neck and forced an awkward smile to smooth things over.“Oh, Daniel’s just panicking. Why not let the officers compare the fingerp

Mary’s face instantly lost all color. She lunged forward to grab Dad’s pant leg, but Dad kicked her away.“Honey! Family scandals shouldn’t be made public! Why are you calling the police?!”The neighbor who had been helping her quickly stepped in to smooth things over.“That’s right. Kids don’t understand things. Whatever problems a husband and wife have, can’t they talk it out behind closed doors? Calling the police… What will the neighbors think of your family?”Dad shot her a cold glance that made the neighbor swallow the rest of her words.Mary was still crying. “I‘ve been sincere to you, to this family! How can you doubt me for this little b*tch? I followed you for so many years, I gave birth to your son, I—”“Enough.” Dad’s voice wasn’t loud, but it was like shards of ice. “If you didn’t do it, what are you afraid of?”His movement as he took out his phone didn’t pause.Mary’s crying stopped abruptly. Her eyes darted wildly, and suddenly she screamed and lunged toward Eth

Mary reacted instantly. She reached out and covered Ethan’s mouth, forcing a smile uglier than crying onto her face.“Honey, listen to him. He fell so hard that his head’s muddled. He’s talking nonsense now.”The hand covering Ethan’s mouth and nose pressed so hard that her fingernails dug into his cheek, turning it pale. The whip in Dad’s hand froze midair, the barbed tip only inches from my eyes. However, he wasn’t looking at me. His bloodshot eyes, like two burning coals, were fixed firmly on Mary’s face.Slowly, the whip lowered and changed direction. The leather tip lightly rested against Mary’s arm.Her whole body stiffened.“Really?” Dad’s voice was low.Mary’s tears fell instantly, her performance full of raw emotion.“You don’t believe me? Let them come and clear my name!”As she spoke, she reached for the phone in her pocket, her movements flustered.Ethan str

Mary’s words were filled with sincerity, carrying all the grievance of a wronged wife.Dad wavered. He thought of the past few years, how Mary had kept her head low, managed the household perfectly, and obeyed him in everything. How could a woman who was willing to give up everything to follow him and had given birth to his only son possibly harm her own flesh and blood?Seeing his hesitation, Mary immediately pressed her advantage. Retreating to advance, her face filled with the resolve of someone whose heart had been completely shattered.“Honey, if you want to investigate, then go ahead. But if it turns out like last time and you find nothing, what you’ll be hurting is my heart. You’ll be destroying the trust between us as husband and wife. And when that happens, I’ll take our son and leave.
