Kairos’s POV

“Then stop hiding behind chains and fight me.”

“Good,” I said, baring my teeth. “I was hoping you would.”

The Ravager Alpha did not rush me.

That was the first mistake people always made. They thought war started with movement.

It starts with waiting.

The chains around him dragged across the ground, slow and deliberate, carving shallow lines into the earth. The sound scraped against my nerves.

Around us, wolves spread out instinctively. My pack moved without command. Rowan to my left. Vaughn drifting right. Seren stayed close, her presence steady but strained. I could feel the Thread stretching through her like pulled glass.

The Ravager Alpha lifted one hand.

The chains snapped upward.

The ground exploded.

I shoved Seren back as a wave of force tore through the clearing. Trees bent. Dirt sprayed into the air. Wolves scattered, claws tearing at soil.

I landed hard, rolling, coming up on one knee.

“Hold the line,” I shouted.

The Thread screamed in response.

Kairos’s POV“If he wants the world to watch, then let it see the truth.”“Good. Neither am I.”The Ravager Alpha’s voice carried closer, no longer drifting. Walking. The chains did not sing now. They whispered. A sound that crawled along the skin and settled behind the eyes. The Thread tightened. Not in warning. In recognition.“He knows where we are,” Rowan said quietly.“Yes,” Seren replied. “And he wants us to know that.”The night to the east shifted. Figures emerged from between the trees, not rushing, not hiding. Wolves walked beside men. Some bound in chains. Some wearing them willingly. My jaw clenched.“He brought witnesses,” Vaughn muttered.“He brought leverage,” I corrected. The Ravager Alpha stepped into the open, blue fire tracing the lines of his chains. He looked amused. Calm. Certain.“You changed,” he said, studying me openly. “I can hear it in the Thread.”“You are not welcome here,” I replied. He smiled. “I never ask for welcome.”Seren stepped forward to my side.

Kairos’s POV“If the world is listening now, then we speak with care.”“The chains are singing.”I felt it before the sound reached my ears. A thin vibration in the Thread. Like wire drawn tight and plucked somewhere far away.Seren’s fingers closed around mine. Not fear. Focus.“Northwest,” she said. “Beyond the ridge.”Rowan looked to me. “That puts them near the old crossing.”“Yes,” I replied. “And close to civilians.”The Thread pulsed, sharp with urgency. We moved. The ascent out of the broken chamber was slower than I wanted. Stone shifted underfoot. Old dust filled the air. But when we broke through into open night, the cold struck like a blade and cleared my head. The sky was wrong. Not stormed. Not burning.Listening.The stars seemed too still, as if waiting for a signal.Rowan lifted his head. “Pack is restless.”“I know,” I said. I could feel it. Wolves pacing. Guards gripping spears tighter than needed. Fear rolling in waves that were not quite panic yet.Seren paused be

Kairos’s POV“If I am no longer whole, then let me be true.”“Reformation initiated.”The words did not land. They sank. The Thread flooded me. Not as pain now, but as pressure that rearranged thought and instinct. I could not tell where my breath ended and Seren’s began. I could not feel my hands, yet I knew where hers were. Close. Anchored. Holding.“Kairos.”Her voice reached me without sound.“I am here,” I answered, unsure if I spoke or thought it.The darkness thinned. Shapes returned in fragments. Not images. Sensations. Cold stone. Heat under skin. The slow drum of something vast and patient. The Thread. It was not a rope anymore. It was a field.I felt its fractures like distant thunder. Each imbalance tugged at me. Each lie stung. Each fear left a bruise.I gasped. My body slammed back into itself.Air burned my lungs. Stone scraped my palms. I rolled onto my side and retched, muscles shaking.“Kairos.”This time her voice had sound.I forced my eyes open.Seren knelt beside

Kairos’s POV“I promised not to follow out of fear. I did not promise not to follow at all.”“Whatever happens next will change all of you.”The gate did not explode. It breathed.Light and shadow twisted together, not clashing, not merging, but threading around one another like living things. The air screamed as the pressure shifted. The Thread at my chest burned so fiercely I thought it might tear free.Seren stepped closer to the threshold.I tightened my grip on her wrist.“Wait,” I said. She turned toward me, her face calm in a way that terrified me more than panic ever could.“This gate,” she said softly, “is not meant for all of us.”Rowan swore under his breath. “Like hell.”Edrin stood motionless, his blind gaze fixed on the opening. “Only one bearer may pass unbroken.”My jaw clenched. “And the rest.”“Will be changed,” he replied. “But not destroyed.”Seren inhaled slowly.“I can feel it,” she said. “The Thread is pulling inward. Toward me.”The light surged, reacting to he

Kairos’s POV“Loss is only irreversible if you refuse to carry it.”“Prepare for irreversible loss.”The warning chased us down the narrowing passage.Stone screamed as it shifted. The walls pressed inward, not to crush us, but to hurry us. Like the place itself wanted an answer before it collapsed.Rowan limped on my left. Vaughn staggered on my right. Seren stayed ahead, guiding us without looking back, her senses stretched thin and sharp.“Left,” she said. “Now.”We turned just as the path behind us sealed shut with a violent crack. The air changed immediately. Warmer. Heavy with ash and old blood. We spilled into a wider chamber, rough and uneven, lit by slow moving veins of blue fire running through the walls. The flames did not burn. They watched.Rowan bent over, hands on his knees, breathing hard. Vaughn slid down the wall and sat heavily, eyes shut.“Do not rest,” I said. “Not yet.”Vaughn forced his eyes open. “I am listening.”Seren pressed her palm to the stone floor. Her
