Morning tension

I wake up already warm.

Sunlight is spilling across the bed in pale gold stripes. For a few seconds I lie still, letting the last pieces of the dream fade. Adrian had been in it again—behind me this time, one hand wrapped around my throat just tightly enough to make my pulse race, the other between my legs while he told me in that low, controlled voice exactly how long he’d been waiting to ruin me.

My sleep shorts are damp. Again.

I drag myself out of bed and into the shower before the ache can turn into something I have to take care of. The cold water helps only until I step out and catch my reflection in the mirror. Flushed cheeks. Dark eyes. The same restless look I’ve been wearing for months.

I dress carefully—soft cream sweater that sits off one shoulder, fitted black leggings, hair left loose down my back. Nothing special. Nothing that should make anyone look twice. Still, when I check myself one last time before leaving the room, I wonder what Adrian would see if he looked at me the way I look at him.

The hallway is quiet. His door is closed. I force myself to walk past it without slowing down.

Downstairs the kitchen smells like fresh coffee and warm pastry. One of the staff has already set out breakfast on the long marble island: sliced fruit, yogurt, croissants still steaming, a pot of coffee. I pour myself a cup and lean against the counter, trying to look normal.

Adrian walks in three minutes later.

He’s in another dark T-shirt and black sweatpants, hair still slightly messy from sleep. The sight of him like this—soft around the edges, not yet locked into the perfect CEO version of himself—hits me harder than it should. He heads straight for the coffee, and the moment he steps into the same space as me the air changes.

“Morning,” he says, voice rough from sleep.

“Morning.”

He pours his coffee black, same as always, then glances at me over the rim of the cup. His eyes move over my face, then lower for half a second before coming back up. I feel that half-second like a hand between my legs.

“You slept?” he asks.

“Some.”

He makes a quiet sound that could mean anything and reaches for a croissant. The movement makes the hem of his T-shirt lift just enough to show a strip of skin and the sharp cut of muscle above his hipbone. I look away too late. When I glance back, he’s watching me.

The silence stretches.

I busy myself with the fruit, spearing pieces of melon I don’t really want. Adrian stays on the other side of the island, drinking his coffee slowly. The distance feels deliberate. It also feels like a dare.

“I have to be at the office by nine,” he says eventually. “Damien’s flying in this afternoon. He’ll be staying for a few weeks.”

My stomach tightens.

Damien. My step-uncle. Adrian’s uncle. The man who smiles like he already knows everyone’s secrets and has never once pretended to be careful with mine.

“Is everything all right with the Singapore deal?” I ask, trying to keep my voice even.

“It’s getting there.” Adrian sets his cup down. “He wants to go over the final numbers in person.”

I nod. Damien’s presence in the house always changes the temperature. He looks at me too long. He stands too close. He says things that sound like jokes until you replay them later and realize they weren’t.

Adrian’s phone buzzes on the counter. He checks it, jaw tightening almost imperceptibly, then slips it into his pocket.

“I need to take this upstairs.” He pauses, eyes on me again. “Eat something real before you leave for campus.”

“I will.”

He doesn’t move right away. For a moment it feels like he’s about to say something else. The space between us feels charged, thin, ready to snap. Then he simply nods once and walks out.

I wait until I hear his footsteps on the stairs before I let out the breath I’ve been holding.

The rest of the morning passes in a blur of lectures I only half hear. I sit in the back of the auditorium, laptop open, and spend more time replaying the kitchen than taking notes. The way his voice sounded rough from sleep. The quick drop of his eyes. The quiet authority when he told me to eat.

By the time I get back to the house in the late afternoon, the sky is already softening into that pale pre-evening light. I drop my bag in the foyer and head toward the stairs, planning to change before Damien arrives.

I don’t make it.

Adrian’s study door is open. He’s standing at the wide window with his back to the room, phone pressed to his ear, speaking in the low, precise tone he uses for business. The sleeves of his white shirt are rolled to the elbows. The late light catches the lines of his forearms.

I should keep walking.

I stop in the doorway instead.

He turns slightly, sees me, and holds up one finger without breaking the call. I stay where I am, heart beating too fast, while he finishes the conversation. When he ends the call he sets the phone on the desk and looks at me fully.

“You’re home early again.”

“Last class got out early.”

He nods once. The study feels smaller with both of us in it. I can smell his cologne from here—clean, expensive, the same scent that clings to his sheets.

“Damien lands in an hour,” he says. “He’ll want dinner. Something formal enough to make him behave.”

I almost smile. “Does anything make Damien behave?”

Adrian’s mouth quirks, the closest thing to a real smile I’ve seen from him in days. “No. But we pretend.”

The almost-smile does something dangerous to my chest.

I take a step farther into the room without deciding to. “Do you need help with anything?”

“No.” His eyes stay on mine. “You look tired.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re not.” He says it the same way he did last night—quiet, certain, like he has the right to decide how I am. “You’ve been distracted for weeks.”

My pulse jumps. “Have I?”

“Yes.” He walks around the desk slowly, stopping a few feet away. Close enough that I have to look up. “You disappear into your head. You barely eat. You look at me sometimes like you’re waiting for something.”

The air leaves my lungs.

I could lie. I should lie. Instead I hear myself say, very softly, “Maybe I am.”

Adrian goes completely still.

For a long second neither of us moves. The only sound is the low tick of the clock on the shelf and my own heartbeat. His eyes are darker than I’ve ever seen them. Something dangerous and hungry moves behind the usual control.

Then his phone buzzes again on the desk, sharp and insistent.

The moment breaks.

Adrian blinks, the intensity shutting down so fast it almost looks painful. He steps back, picks up the phone, and glances at the screen.

“I have to take this.” His voice is steady again. Controlled. “Go change for dinner. Damien will expect us both downstairs at seven.”

I nod, not trusting myself to speak, and turn to leave.

I’m almost at the door when he says my name.

“Aria.”

I look back.

He’s still standing by the desk, phone in hand, expression unreadable again. But his voice is lower than before.

“Whatever you’re waiting for,” he says quietly, “be careful with it.”

I don’t answer.

I just walk out of the study with my pulse roaring in my ears and the weight of his words following me all the way up the stairs.

Damien arrives in less than an hour.

And I already know nothing in this house is going to stay the same.

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Deadline

The day of Kai’s deadline arrives with no warning shots.I wake up knowing that by tonight, either I give him something that satisfies him, or he walks into Adrian’s study and starts talking. The knowledge sits in my chest like a stone.Downstairs, Adrian is already working. He glances up when I enter the kitchen, eyes assessing me the way they have every morning since Damien left.“You look worse,” he says bluntly.“I didn’t sleep.”He sets his pen down. “After the gala I’m sending you to the lake house for a few days. Alone. No Damien. No visitors. Just quiet.”The offer is meant to be protective. It feels like another form of control.“I have classes.”“You’ll manage.” His tone leaves no room for argument. “One more day, Aria. Then we deal with whatever this is.”I nod because I have no other option.Kai arrives mid-morning. He doesn’t bother with small talk. He finds me in the library and closes the door hard enough that the sound echoes.“Last day,” he says. “Have you ended it?”

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Two days

The house feels wrong without Damien in it.Not safer. Just quieter in a way that makes every other sound louder. I wake up to the knowledge that the immediate threat has been moved across the city, yet the pressure has only changed shape. Adrian’s eyes follow me more closely. Kai checks in with short, careful messages. And my phone remains a silent threat of its own.Two days until the gala.I come downstairs to find Adrian already at the dining table, reviewing documents. He looks like he slept as little as I did. When he sees me, he sets the papers aside.“Sit,” he says. “Eat.”I sit. The silence between us is heavier than usual. After several minutes he speaks without looking up from his coffee.“I spoke to Damien this morning. He’ll attend the gala. Alone. He understands the boundaries.”The way he says understands makes it clear the conversation was not polite.I nod, not trusting my voice.Adrian finally looks at me. “Kai will be with us the entire evening. You will not leave m

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    The line he won’t cross…yet

Damien does not leave quietly.I am in the foyer when the driver brings the car around. Adrian stands near the door, arms crossed, expression carved from ice. Kai is present as well—Adrian must have asked him to stay. The three men form a silent triangle while two staff members carry Damien’s bags outside.Damien himself looks completely unbothered. He adjusts his cuffs, glances at the waiting car, then turns to Adrian.“You’re making a mistake,” he says mildly. “Removing me doesn’t remove the problem.”Adrian’s voice is flat. “The only problem in this house right now is you.”Damien’s eyes slide to me. The look lasts only a second, but it carries the weight of every night I left the door unlocked. Then he smiles, small and private.“I’ll see you at the gala,” he says to no one in particular. “All of you.”He walks out. The car door closes. The engine fades down the driveway. For a moment the house feels larger and quieter than it has in weeks.Adrian exhales through his nose. “It’s d

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Four days

The countdown starts the moment I wake up.Four days until the gala.Four days until Kai’s ultimatum expires.Four days until Damien decides whether to keep the secret or use it as a weapon in front of everyone who matters to the Rosenhall name.I come downstairs braced for another confrontation. Instead I find the house unnervingly calm.Adrian is in the dining room reviewing something on a tablet. He looks up when I enter, and the concern in his eyes is sharper than yesterday.“You didn’t eat last night,” he says. “Sit. Eat something now.”It isn’t a suggestion. I sit. He watches me force down toast and coffee like the act itself is proof of something. After a long silence he speaks again, voice low. “I’ve asked Damien to stay at the city apartment until after the gala.”My head snaps up.Adrian’s expression is unreadable. “He agreed. Mostly.”“Mostly?”“He said he would consider it.” Adrian sets the tablet down. “I don’t like the way he looks at you. I don’t like the way you’ve bee

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Consequences

I barely sleep.Every sound in the hallway makes my body go rigid. I keep expecting the door handle to turn again, or for Damien to simply stop pretending he needs permission. When gray morning light finally seeps through the curtains, my eyes are dry and my nerves are scraped raw.I unlock the door only when I hear movement downstairs. The kitchen is empty at first. I make coffee with shaking hands and try to steady my breathing. The decision to lock him out last night feels both necessary and reckless. I can still hear his voice through the wood: Wrong choice, Aria.Footsteps approach. It isn’t Damien.Kai walks in, already dressed, expression tight. He stops when he sees me.“You look like you didn’t sleep,” he says.“I didn’t.”He closes the distance between us, voice low. “Did something happen last night?”I hesitate too long.Kai’s eyes darken. “Aria.”Before I can answer, Adrian enters. He takes one look at the two of us standing close and the temperature in the room drops.“Am

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    First crack in public

The next morning everything feels one breath away from snapping.I come downstairs late on purpose, hoping the kitchen will be empty. It isn’t.Adrian, Damien, and Kai are all there. The three of them stand in a loose triangle near the island. The air is thick enough to taste. Adrian’s expression is carved from stone. Damien looks almost amused. Kai’s jaw is tight, his eyes flicking to me the second I appear.Conversation dies.Adrian is the first to speak. “We were just discussing the gala next Friday.”My stomach drops. The annual Rosenhall charity gala. Hundreds of people. Cameras. Family on display.“You’re expected to attend,” Adrian continues, eyes on me. “All of us are.”Damien smiles into his coffee. “Should be entertaining.”Kai says nothing, but the look he gives me is clear: This is a bad idea.I force a nod. “Of course.”Adrian’s gaze lingers on my face, then drops briefly to the high collar of my sweater. Something dark moves behind his eyes before he shuts it down.“I ha
