The arrival

Damien’s car pulls into the circular driveway at exactly 6:47 p.m.

I am already downstairs, standing near the tall windows in a black silk dress that clings to my body more than I planned. The fabric feels too thin against my skin. Every time I move, it reminds me of the way Adrian looked at me in the study earlier—like he was two seconds away from doing something we could never take back.

The front door opens. Voices drift in from the foyer. Adrian’s low, controlled tone. Then another voice—smoother, warmer, threaded with lazy amusement.

Damien.

I stay where I am for three full seconds, trying to steady my breathing, before I force myself to walk toward them.

He looks exactly the same as the last time I saw him six months ago and somehow worse. Taller than Adrian by an inch, broader in the shoulders, dark hair slightly longer and pushed back from a face that is all sharp edges and easy charm. He is wearing a charcoal suit with the tie already loosened, top button undone, as if the formal world is something he tolerates rather than respects.

When his eyes land on me, they stay.

“Well,” he says, voice rich with something that makes my stomach tighten. “Little Aria. You’ve grown up.”

Adrian’s jaw ticks once. “She’s twenty-two, Damien. Not twelve.”

“I’m aware.” Damien’s gaze drops slowly down my body and back up again, unapologetic. “Very aware.”

Heat floods my cheeks. I hate that he can still do that to me with nothing but a look.

Adrian steps slightly closer to my side—so subtle most people would miss it. I don’t. The warmth of his presence sinks into my skin even though we aren’t touching.

“Dinner is in twenty minutes,” Adrian says. “You can freshen up first.”

Damien smiles, slow and knowing. “Of course. Wouldn’t want to keep the family waiting.” His eyes flick back to me. “Especially not when the view is this good.”

He walks past us toward the stairs, suitcase in hand, and the faint scent of his cologne—darker, spicier than Adrian’s—lingers in the air behind him.

The second he is out of sight, Adrian turns to me.

“You didn’t have to come down early.”

“I live here,” I say quietly. “It’s not early.”

His eyes move over my face, then lower to the neckline of my dress for half a heartbeat. Something dark flashes through them before he shuts it down.

“Change if you want,” he says. “That dress is… a lot.”

The words should feel like criticism. Instead they feel like a hand sliding under the silk.

“I’ll keep it,” I answer.

For a moment neither of us moves. The space between us is charged again, the same dangerous electricity from the study. I can still hear his voice saying be careful with it. I want to ask him what he meant. I want him to close the distance and show me.

Instead he steps back.

“I’ll be in the dining room.”

He walks away without waiting for a reply.

I stand alone in the foyer for several long seconds, pulse loud in my ears, before I force my legs to move.

Dinner is a carefully arranged performance.

The long table is set with white china and crystal. Soft lighting. The kind of quiet elegance the Rosenhall family has perfected. Adrian sits at the head. Damien takes the seat across from me. I am left directly in his line of sight.

The first course is barely touched before Damien starts talking.

“Singapore was a mess,” he says, swirling red wine in his glass. “But we cleaned it up. Your brother here is getting better at damage control.”

Adrian doesn’t rise to the bait. He simply cuts into his food with precise movements.

Damien’s attention shifts to me. “And what about you, Aria? Still burying yourself in textbooks, or have you finally decided to enjoy being young and beautiful under this roof?”

The way he says under this roof makes my skin prickle.

“I’m in my final year,” I reply evenly. “That’s enough for now.”

“Is it?” He leans back in his chair, eyes never leaving mine. “I remember you used to watch Adrian like he hung the moon. Still doing that?”

The air at the table goes tight.

Adrian’s fork stills.

I keep my voice steady even though my heart is slamming against my ribs. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Damien smiles, slow and sharp. “Of course you don’t.”

Adrian sets his utensils down with deliberate care. “That’s enough.”

The two men look at each other across the table. Something silent and sharp passes between them—old history, old rivalry, something I have never been allowed to fully understand.

Damien raises his hands in mock surrender. “Just making conversation.”

The rest of the meal continues under a thin layer of tension. Every time I glance up, Damien is watching me. Every time I look at Adrian, he is already looking away.

By the time dessert is cleared, my nerves are frayed.

I stand first. “I’m going to bed. Early lecture tomorrow.”

Adrian nods once. Damien’s voice follows me as I leave the dining room.

“Sweet dreams, Aria. Try not to think too hard about anything… forbidden.”

I don’t answer. I just keep walking, spine straight, until I am out of sight.

Upstairs, I close my bedroom door and lean against it, breathing hard.

My body is restless again. The silk of the dress feels too tight across my chest. Every place Damien looked at me still burns. And underneath it all is the heavier, deeper ache that belongs only to Adrian—the way he stepped closer to me in the foyer, the warning in his voice, the almost-loss of control in his eyes.

I strip out of the dress and stand in front of the mirror in black lace underwear. My reflection looks flushed, restless, hungry.

I imagine Adrian opening the door right now. I imagine him seeing me like this and finally deciding he is done being careful. I imagine his hands on my waist, his mouth on my neck, his voice low and rough as he tells me exactly what he is going to do to me.

A soft, broken sound leaves my throat.

I climb into bed without putting anything else on and turn off the light. Sleep does not come easily. Every time I close my eyes I see Damien’s knowing smile and Adrian’s dark, restrained stare.

Somewhere down the hall, a door opens and closes.

I lie still, listening, pulse racing, waiting for footsteps that never come to my door.

Not yet.

But the house feels different tonight.

Damien is here.

And nothing about the careful distance Adrian has kept between us feels safe anymore.

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Deadline

The day of Kai’s deadline arrives with no warning shots.I wake up knowing that by tonight, either I give him something that satisfies him, or he walks into Adrian’s study and starts talking. The knowledge sits in my chest like a stone.Downstairs, Adrian is already working. He glances up when I enter the kitchen, eyes assessing me the way they have every morning since Damien left.“You look worse,” he says bluntly.“I didn’t sleep.”He sets his pen down. “After the gala I’m sending you to the lake house for a few days. Alone. No Damien. No visitors. Just quiet.”The offer is meant to be protective. It feels like another form of control.“I have classes.”“You’ll manage.” His tone leaves no room for argument. “One more day, Aria. Then we deal with whatever this is.”I nod because I have no other option.Kai arrives mid-morning. He doesn’t bother with small talk. He finds me in the library and closes the door hard enough that the sound echoes.“Last day,” he says. “Have you ended it?”

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Two days

The house feels wrong without Damien in it.Not safer. Just quieter in a way that makes every other sound louder. I wake up to the knowledge that the immediate threat has been moved across the city, yet the pressure has only changed shape. Adrian’s eyes follow me more closely. Kai checks in with short, careful messages. And my phone remains a silent threat of its own.Two days until the gala.I come downstairs to find Adrian already at the dining table, reviewing documents. He looks like he slept as little as I did. When he sees me, he sets the papers aside.“Sit,” he says. “Eat.”I sit. The silence between us is heavier than usual. After several minutes he speaks without looking up from his coffee.“I spoke to Damien this morning. He’ll attend the gala. Alone. He understands the boundaries.”The way he says understands makes it clear the conversation was not polite.I nod, not trusting my voice.Adrian finally looks at me. “Kai will be with us the entire evening. You will not leave m

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    The line he won’t cross…yet

Damien does not leave quietly.I am in the foyer when the driver brings the car around. Adrian stands near the door, arms crossed, expression carved from ice. Kai is present as well—Adrian must have asked him to stay. The three men form a silent triangle while two staff members carry Damien’s bags outside.Damien himself looks completely unbothered. He adjusts his cuffs, glances at the waiting car, then turns to Adrian.“You’re making a mistake,” he says mildly. “Removing me doesn’t remove the problem.”Adrian’s voice is flat. “The only problem in this house right now is you.”Damien’s eyes slide to me. The look lasts only a second, but it carries the weight of every night I left the door unlocked. Then he smiles, small and private.“I’ll see you at the gala,” he says to no one in particular. “All of you.”He walks out. The car door closes. The engine fades down the driveway. For a moment the house feels larger and quieter than it has in weeks.Adrian exhales through his nose. “It’s d

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Four days

The countdown starts the moment I wake up.Four days until the gala.Four days until Kai’s ultimatum expires.Four days until Damien decides whether to keep the secret or use it as a weapon in front of everyone who matters to the Rosenhall name.I come downstairs braced for another confrontation. Instead I find the house unnervingly calm.Adrian is in the dining room reviewing something on a tablet. He looks up when I enter, and the concern in his eyes is sharper than yesterday.“You didn’t eat last night,” he says. “Sit. Eat something now.”It isn’t a suggestion. I sit. He watches me force down toast and coffee like the act itself is proof of something. After a long silence he speaks again, voice low. “I’ve asked Damien to stay at the city apartment until after the gala.”My head snaps up.Adrian’s expression is unreadable. “He agreed. Mostly.”“Mostly?”“He said he would consider it.” Adrian sets the tablet down. “I don’t like the way he looks at you. I don’t like the way you’ve bee

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    Consequences

I barely sleep.Every sound in the hallway makes my body go rigid. I keep expecting the door handle to turn again, or for Damien to simply stop pretending he needs permission. When gray morning light finally seeps through the curtains, my eyes are dry and my nerves are scraped raw.I unlock the door only when I hear movement downstairs. The kitchen is empty at first. I make coffee with shaking hands and try to steady my breathing. The decision to lock him out last night feels both necessary and reckless. I can still hear his voice through the wood: Wrong choice, Aria.Footsteps approach. It isn’t Damien.Kai walks in, already dressed, expression tight. He stops when he sees me.“You look like you didn’t sleep,” he says.“I didn’t.”He closes the distance between us, voice low. “Did something happen last night?”I hesitate too long.Kai’s eyes darken. “Aria.”Before I can answer, Adrian enters. He takes one look at the two of us standing close and the temperature in the room drops.“Am

  • FORBIDDEN DESIRE    First crack in public

The next morning everything feels one breath away from snapping.I come downstairs late on purpose, hoping the kitchen will be empty. It isn’t.Adrian, Damien, and Kai are all there. The three of them stand in a loose triangle near the island. The air is thick enough to taste. Adrian’s expression is carved from stone. Damien looks almost amused. Kai’s jaw is tight, his eyes flicking to me the second I appear.Conversation dies.Adrian is the first to speak. “We were just discussing the gala next Friday.”My stomach drops. The annual Rosenhall charity gala. Hundreds of people. Cameras. Family on display.“You’re expected to attend,” Adrian continues, eyes on me. “All of us are.”Damien smiles into his coffee. “Should be entertaining.”Kai says nothing, but the look he gives me is clear: This is a bad idea.I force a nod. “Of course.”Adrian’s gaze lingers on my face, then drops briefly to the high collar of my sweater. Something dark moves behind his eyes before he shuts it down.“I ha
