CHAPTER FIVE

The voice came again, close.

I didn't know it was morning already.

The light through the barred window looked pale. My back hurt from sleeping on the cold floor. I did not know how long I had been there; my hand still hurt, and my cheek was wet with tears. I did not remember crying.

I stood up and looked around the room; the bars on the window cast shadows on the floor.

I pressed my ear to the door and listened. I heard footsteps in the hallway and my mother's voice.

She was laughing.

While I am here in a room that feels like a tomb.

I banged my fist against the door.

"Let me out!"

The footsteps stopped.

Then they started again, walking away.

I banged harder. "Please!"

My vision blurred as hot tears formed behind my eyes.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand and hated myself for crying.

Crying never changed anything.

I heard the lock turn.

The door opened and my mother stepped inside. She wore a cream-coloured dress, and her hair was pinned up. She looked like she was going to a party.

"You need to eat something," she said.

"I need to leave."

She set a tray of toast, eggs and orange juice on the bed.

"Eat."

"I said I want to leave."

My mother looked at me. Her eyes travelled over my tangled hair, my dirty clothes, and the blood on my hands.

For one second, I saw something soft in her face.

Then it was gone.

"The seamstress is coming at noon," she said. "The dress is ready for your final fitting."

"You'll look beautiful."

"I don't want to look beautiful. I don't want the dress. I don't want any of this."

My mother picked up the tray and held it towards me.

"Eat, Gabrielle. You're too thin. The dress won't fit properly."

I knocked the tray out of her hands.

Eggs splattered on the floor and the glass shattered. Orange juice soaked into the carpet.

My mother stared at the mess, then she stared at me.

"You will clean this up," she said quietly.

"No."

"You will clean this up, put on the dress, and marry Damiano. Do you understand?"

"I would rather die."

The words hung between us.

My mother's face did not change.

"Then you will die married to him."

She walked out and locked the door behind her.

I stood in the middle of the broken glass and spilt eggs. I screamed until my throat burnt.

Hours passed. I don't know how many. The light through the window shifted from pale to grey.

I heard cars and voices outside. The front door opened and closed many times.

Wedding preparations.

They were preparing for my funeral.

The lock turned again.

This time it was Elena; she stood in the doorway with her arms wrapped around herself.

"Gabi..."

"Don't."

"They're going to bring you downstairs now. The seamstress is here.ā€

"Then go back and tell them I said no."

Elena's lip trembled. "You know I can't."

"Then why are you here? To mock me?"

"I'm here because I love you."

I laughed… It sounded ugly.

"You let them lock me in this room, and you walked past my door for hours while I screamed. Don't tell me you love me."

Elena started crying as big wet tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I'm so sorry."

"Sorry" doesn't solve this, Elena.

I walked closer to her. "Her gaze flickered; for a second, the tears stopped looking real.

"Stop pretending," I said softly. "You don't love me. You like thinking you're a good sister. But you always choose what's easier for you."

Tears ran down her face, but she said nothing.

"Does this make you feel better, Elena? Watching me break?ā€

"Gabi, that's not…"

"Get out."

She tried to reach for me, but I stepped away.

"Leave."

Elena turned and walked out.

Two men appeared. Marco and another guard I didn't recognise.

"It's time," Marco said.

He didn't look at me.

I stepped back. My legs hit the bed.

"Don't touch me."

"Miss Gabrielle, please."

"I said, 'Don't touch me!'"

Marco nodded at the other guard. They moved towards me together.

I grabbed the lamp from the bedside table and swung it. The other guard caught my wrist while Marco took the lamp.

"Stop fighting," he said quietly. "You'll only hurt yourself.ā€

"I don't care."

But they were stronger; they pulled my arms behind my back and half-carried me out of the room, down the stairs.

The house looked different. Flowers everywhere with white ribbons. Chairs being set up in the backyard.

My mother stood in the living room talking to a woman holding a white lace dress.

"Ah, there she is," my mother said. "The bride."

They sat me in a chair. The seamstress knelt in front of me with pins in her mouth.

"We need to take her measurements again," she said. "She's lost weight."

My mother sighed. "Of course she has."

The seamstress measured my arms, my waist, and my hips.

I sat still.

The seamstress finished and stood up.

"The dress will fit," she said. "Shall we try it on?"

My mother smiled.

"Yes," she said. "Let's see the bride."

The seamstress held out the dress.

"Arms up," she said.

I didn't move.

My mother stepped closer. Her smile disappeared.

"Arms up, Gabrielle. Now."

My hands stayed at my sides.

My mother grabbed my wrist and lifted my arm herself.

The dress slid over my head.

A tear ran down my cheek.

"Does it fit?" My mother said she looked at me the way someone looks at a painting. Not really seeing me, just checking if the frame was straight.

"It fits," the seamstress said.

My mother nodded. "Good. Take it off and hang it in her room. The wedding is in five days."

She turned to leave.

"Mother."

She stopped.

"What?"

I opened my mouth.

Then I stared at her.

The question hit me harder than a slap for a second; I couldn't move as the office around me faded away. I tightened my grip around Luca's shoulder; he looked up at me, confused by the sudden tension. "Mommy?" I forced a smile. "It's okay, baby." But my voice shook, and Damiano noticed. His eyes moved from Luca to me again, and there was something different in his face now as the cold confidence he usually carried was gone. He looked shocked and almost lost. "Gabrielle," he said quietly. "Answer me." I swallowed hard. "He has my eyes." Damiano's brows pulled together. "No." My heart jumped. He stepped closer. "I've seen your eyes, Gabrielle, and those aren't yours." My palms turned cold… I looked around the room, and everyone quickly looked away. Anna's smile disappeared, and Grace stood completely still. I couldn't let this continue. "Damiano, this isn't the place for this conversation." His jaw tightened. "Then where is it?" "Anywhere but not here." He looked at Luca

The caller ID flashed Daniel's name, and I answered immediately."Daniel?""Gabrielle, I wanted to let you know that everything is almost ready at the store."I sank back onto the couch, surprised. "Already?""Almost…Anna and Grace got here a few minutes ago, and they're helping the team with the final setup."A small, involuntary smile touched my lips. "That's good. Thank you for letting me know."There was a brief pause on his end. "Are you feeling better?"I glanced over at Luca and Lia, who were sprawled on the carpet, arguing over a coloring book."I'm better now," I said, and I meant it.Daniel chuckled softly. "Good. You sounded like you needed your kids.""I did."I ended the call and set my phone down on the table… for a long moment, I just watched my children. They didn't know what happened at the meeting. And they didn't know their father was nearby or how hard I had tried to keep my past away from them."Mommy?" Luca called out, pulling me from my thoughts.I looked at hi

The elevator doors closed, but I could still feel Damiano's eyes on me.I stood beside Daniel, staring at the silver doors as they carried us down. My hands were still shaking; I pressed them together, hoping Daniel wouldn't notice, but he did."You don't have to pretend with me," he said quietly.I looked at him. "Pretend what?""That you're fine."I looked away, and the elevator continued downward."I am fine."Daniel gave me a small look. "Gabrielle."I sighed. "I just want to go home."He nodded. "Then that's what we'll do."When the elevator opened, I walked out quickly.Outside, the afternoon air hit my face, and I took a deep breath.I had spent five years building a life without him. I had my children, my company, my money, and my own name. I had survived the nights when I cried myself to sleep and wondered if leaving had been a mistake. And now, after one meeting, he has managed to bring every old feeling back. I hated him for it, but I hated myself even more for still caring

"The room fell silent after Damiano's words. Everyone's eyes shifted between us, sensing something unspoken hanging in the air.I kept my expression neutral, but inside, my mind was racing. What could he possibly want to discuss that couldn't wait until after the meeting?Damiano didn't sit back down; instead, he looked at the others around the table. "If you'll excuse us for a moment."The investors exchanged glances before gathering their papers. One by one, they filed out.Daniel hesitated beside me, his eyes asking if I wanted him to stay. I gave him a small nod. "I'll be fine." He studied my face before leaving with the others. The door clicked shut; now it was just the two of us.Damiano stood at the head of the table, his hands resting on the back of his chair. "You've done well for yourself," he said finally.I remained seated, my hands folded over my folder. "Thank you.""Your company, when did you start it?"I didn't answer immediately. I knew what he was doing… trying to

For a moment, everything around me seemed to disappear as the sound of footsteps faded. All I could see were those words on my phone: Damiano De Luca will be attending the meeting in person. My fingers tightened around the phone.Of all the people I could face today, why did it have to be him?I slowly lifted my head and looked at Daniel. He had stopped beside me."You saw the message?" he asked.I nodded."Are you okay?"I swallowed,My heart was beating so hard that I could feel it against my ribs. My palms were cold, and for one foolish second, I wanted to turn around, take Luca and Lia, and leave this city before Damiano ever see us.But I couldn't...I had already spent five years running; I wasn't going to run again."I'm fine," I said.Daniel studied my face. "Gabrielle…""I can do this."He didn't argue. We walked out of the hotel and got into the car. The entire drive to the meeting, I stared through the window; everything looked normal, but inside me, everything was shaking

For several seconds, he simply stared at it.After five years of silence, my name sat in front of him like a ghost rising from the past.He leaned back slowly, his eyes still fixed on the paper. "Are you sure this is correct?"His assistant looked confused. "Yes, sir.""Gabrielle Barone?""Yes."Damiano picked up the folder and read the name again. He hadn't heard from me in five years. When I left, he'd expected me to disappear completely, as our marriage had ended in silence. He'd convinced himself that was where our story ended too. He'd built his entire life around that belief. So why did seeing my name now make his chest feel strangely tight? He closed the folder. "Leave me."His assistant nodded and walked out.The moment the door clicked shut, Damiano opened the folder again. He hated that he was curious and he hated even more that he couldn't stop himself. He reached for his laptop and searched for Luca & Lia Children's Wear. The company appeared almost immediately.Damiano fr
