The door swung open and Elena walked in, her face bright with a smile that faded the moment she saw us together.

"Oh," she said, her voice dropping. "I didn't realize you were here, Damiano."

For a moment, I saw jealousy and anger in her eyes, and then she smiled again.

"I was just looking for you," she said, slipping her arm through his. "We have lunch plans, remember?"

Damiano glanced at me. "I remember."

"Good," Elena said sweetly as she took his hand and led him toward the door. "Let's go.

Damiano looked down at the screen. It was Elena. For a few seconds, he just stared at her name, his thumb hovering over the answer button. He didn't want to talk to her. Not now, not when Gabrielle had just walked out of his life. The phone rang again, and he finally answered."What?"Elena was silent for a second. "Damiano?""I'm tired, Elena." His voice came out cold. "I need to be alone for a moment.""But I need to talk to you.""Not now."He moved toward the window and looked outside. The taxi was already gone; he could no longer see Gabrielle."Please," Elena said. "Just listen to me."Damiano closed his eyes. "Elena, I said I need to be alone.""But you don't understand what's happening."His jaw tightened. "What's happening?""Your father lied to you."Damiano opened his eyes. "What are you talking about?""He only said all those things because he wanted you to feel sorry for Gabrielle."Damiano frowned. "What things?""You know what I mean." Elena's voice became shaky. "You

I stopped, my hand frozen on the door handle. For a moment, I just stood there with my eyes closed.I didn’t want to turn around.Because if I did, I was afraid I’d see something in Damiano’s face that would make me stay. Then I heard footsteps behind me.“Gabrielle.”This time, it wasn’t Damiano.I turned slowly.Matteo stood a few feet away. His face looked exhausted, and there was a sadness in his eyes that made my chest ache. He glanced at the suitcase beside me, then back at my face.“Please,” he said softly. “Don’t leave like this.”My throat tightened.Of all the people in that house, Matteo was the last person I wanted to hurt. He’d never treated me like I didn't belong. When everyone else looked at me with suspicion, he looked at me like I was a person…I swallowed hard.“I have to go.”He shook his head slowly. “No, you don’t.”“Yes, I do.”“Where will you go?”I looked down at my suitcase. “I don’t know.”Saying it out loud made it sound even worse. I didn’t have a place wa

The door swung open, and my breath caught in my throat.Damiano stood there, his hand still raised as if he had been about to knock. His dark eyes dropped to the suitcase in my hand, and something shifted in his face."Where are you going?"His voice was quiet, but I heard the confusion underneath it.I didn't answer right away; I just stood there, holding my suitcase."Gabrielle."He said my name like it was a question he was afraid to ask."Somewhere else," I finally said.My voice was steady; I was surprised.Damiano stepped closer, his eyes still fixed on my suitcase. "You can't just leave.""Why not?""The divorce isn't finalized yet. You're still my wife."I almost laughed, but I was too tired to laugh."Then consider this me leaving before it's official. Consider it a head start."His jaw tightened. "That's not how it works.""Damiano." I said his name slowly, "I don't care how it works anymore."Something flickered in his eyes; I couldn't tell if it was anger or something else

I quickly wiped my tears with the back of my hand. For a few seconds, I stayed on the floor. I didn't want to know who was outside. But deep down, I already knew.Another knock came."Gabrielle?"My heart tightened.I closed my eyes; of all the people who could have come to my door, he was the last person I wanted to face."Gabrielle, please open the door."His voice was quiet, almost broken.I slowly stood up, and my legs still felt weak. I walked toward the door but stopped before touching the handle. "Gabrielle, we need to talk."I stared at the wooden door between us.Talk? After everything that had happened? After standing there while everyone looked at me like I was a criminal? My fingers curled into fists."Go away, Damiano."There was silence."Please.""No…"My voice shook, but I forced myself to stay firm."I don't want to talk.""I know you're angry."I almost laughed… Angry? That was too small a word for what I felt."I said, 'Go away.'""Gabrielle, I was wrong."My eyes

The room filled with whispers as everyone seemed shocked and confused.Rosa's face twisted. "Honey, what are you saying? The wristwatch was found in her bag; everyone saw it."Matteo didn't flinch as his eyes moved from Rosa to Damiano. "I heard what everyone saw. But I'm asking myself something different."He turned to face his son fully. "Damiano, tell me something."Damiano's jaw tightened. "What?""In the past months, how many times has Gabrielle been accused of stealing something?"Elena's face paled. "Mr. Matteo, I don't understand.""I'm not asking you." His voice cut through her words like a blade. His eyes stayed fixed on Damiano. "I'm asking my son."Damiano remained silent.Mr. Matteo took a step closer. "How many times, Damiano?""I..." Damiano's voice faltered. I watched hesitation flicker across his face, his eyes darting toward Elena before returning to his father."Two," Matteo said quietly. "Two times something went missing and blame fell on your wife."Murmurs spread

For a long moment, I couldn't speak. The room spun around me as Damiano's question echoed inside my head."Did you really do this?"Those five words hurt more than Rosa's accusations. More than the whispers and the way everyone looked at me like I was already guilty.I started at Damiano, hoping he would defend me and tell everyone that I wasn't capable of stealing, but he didn't. He only stood there, his eyes fixed on me, waiting for my answer. This was the same man who held me in his arms just hours ago. Now, he was looking at me with doubt, as if he believed I was a thief. Then, like a flash of lightning, everything came rushing back."Last night, after Elena spilled a drink on my dress during the celebration, I left the restroom to clean up, and she offered to help hold my bag.”I remembered handing it to her before I went into the restroom."I'll hold it for you," she had said with that soft smile. My heart skipped...I had thought nothing of it at the time; I had even thanked her.
