Chapter 26

Aurelia

I wake up to my alarm at eight AM.

For a moment, I consider not going. Consider staying in bed, hiding like I always do.

Then I remember the phone call. Victoria and Julian, making sure I knew I was nothing.

I get up.

Shower. The water is scalding but I don't turn it down. Let it burn my skin until I'm pink all over.

I stare at my closet. All my oversized hoodies and baggy pants stare back.

Armor. That's what Sienna called them. Armor to hide in.

But if I'm doing this, if I'

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   MAYBE LIFE CHANGED ME

Chapter 98 AureliaI watched the chef carry the plates away, and even after the kitchen doors swung shut behind her, I could still feel Dreyven's eyes on me.He'd been quiet since we arrived...unusually quiet... and somehow that silence irritated me more than his questions ever did. I kept my gaze fixed on the kitchen, pretending to care what the staff were doing in there, because the last thing I needed was for him to study my face and see something I wasn't ready to show him.Especially not now.He still believed I was broken. That was exactly what I needed him to believe."Are you really hungry?" His voice came quietly from beside me. I glanced at him for a second, then looked away again."No." His gaze lingered a beat too long. "You haven't eaten since we left the hospital.""I said I'm not hungry."Something flickered across his expression... subtle, the kind of thing most people would miss. I didn't. He was worried, but not in the panicked way people usually got. It was the

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   THIS WASN'T GOING TO BE EASY

Chapter 97DreyvenI stepped out into the hallway...after I and the doctor had finished speaking in his office...and checked my phone out of habit more than anything else, and that's when I saw it. Our group chat had over thirty messages waiting, all of them from the last twenty minutes.*Ven what is going on**Did you really say that**Somebody explain right now**Ven answer your phone*I didn't type anything back. Some things needed a voice behind them, not just words on a screen. I hit call instead, and all three of them picked up before the second ring even finished."Why will you do that?" Drayton's voice came through first, loud and fast, the way it always did when he was worried and trying to sound angry about it instead."Is she really coming?" Dreylen asked, right on top of him."When is she coming?" Dreyden's voice cut through both of theirs, steady but not calm, not really. All three questions landed almost at once, tangled together so close I could barely tell where one

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS

Chapter 96AureliaI watched the way Dreyven's hands went still immediately the words came out from his mouth. He'd acted out of emotions and he hated it. But he can't do anything because men like him pride in keeping to their words.Still didn't mean that Sienna wouldn't try to say something stupid, I needed to beat her to it."I do not think it's okay." I said with the most pitiful voice I could gather. I turned my head to the doctor and gave him a puppy look, the voice still doing it's work."Or is it doctor? Can I stay at their place, since this gentleman right here has decided to assist?"The doctor cleared his throat."It's okay actually. As long as they promise to take good care of you and employ a nurse, then that'll be okay.""We can assign three nurses to her, while I and my brothers would care for her if we're available." The doctor nods and said something about needing a few minutes alone with Dreyven to go over the details, paperwork, insurance, all the boring parts nobo

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   OUT OF MY MOUTH

Chapter 95Dreyven I turned around slowly, my hand still on the doorframe."I don't understand what you're saying." My voice came out quieter than I meant it to. "You need to rest, Aurelia.""I don't need rest." She was still crying, but her voice had gone hard underneath it, hard enough to hold steady even with the tears running down her face. "I need to understand what's happening to my own body. And you should be here for that too, since it was one of your riders that put me in this bed in the first place."I stood in that doorway a long moment, my jaw tight, my chest still aching from what she'd said before. Some part of me wanted to argue that it wasn't his fault, that it wasn't really an accident at all, that she'd walked into that path herself. I didn't say any of it. This wasn't the moment for that fight, and some instinct in me knew it. Whatever had actually happened out there in that lot, she was the one lying in a hospital bed right now, and I was the one still able to

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   DO YOU WANT TO GO CELEBRATE SOMEWHERE

Chapter 94DreyvenI walked inside and saw her laying there peacefully. Pipes and wire surrounded her like if one is pulled out, she wouldn't survive. The thought broke something in me as I stared at her.Why did she come to the race, I couldn't help but wonder.Someone like her isn't careless that she wouldn't look before crossing. So how did she get hit.I couldn't put how I was feeling, just wanted to call my brothers. I needed to hear their voices. The doctor and the nurse came in after me immediately, politely asking me to step out from the room.I didn't argue, I had no strength left for it. So I nodded and walked out, but not after staring at her one last time........This was the fourth night I'd fallen asleep in that hospital, and every single time, I woke up with a stiff neck and the same sick feeling sitting low in my stomach, the kind that doesn't go away just because you open your eyes.I'd been staying in the family room down the hall since the night I brought her in, g

  • FOUR SHADES OF DREY   I NEED TO SEE HER

Chapter 93DreyvenI was still laughing at something one of my guys said about my last lap when I heard the tires screaming. That sound goes straight past your ears and hits you somewhere lower, somewhere your body understands before your brain even catches up.That sound always a company's a great disaster. I'd heard tires do that a hundred times on that same stretch of road. I'd never once heard it followed by a scream.I turned around fast. A bike swerved hard to one side. Something hit the ground and rolled. Someone shouted for anybody to call an ambulance. Then I saw her face, and everything in me just stopped. For one long second I couldn't move at all. My legs wouldn't listen to me. My arms wouldn't listen to me. I stood there holding my helmet like an idiot while people ran past me toward her, every single one of them faster to move than I was.I don't have a clean answer for why my body froze like that. I've gone over it again and again since it happened, and the closest I c
