CHAPTER TWO: FOUR STRANGERS

MIA'S POV

The Ashcroft house was exactly as intimidating as the photos had suggested — white stone, black shutters, a driveway long enough to need its own zip code — and I stood on the front step with my suitcase handle sweating in my palm, wondering, not for the first time, why my mother had fallen in love with a man who lived somewhere that looked like it required a dress code just to exist inside it.

"You must be Mia." The housekeeper who opened the door had kind eyes and a clipboard, which felt like an oddly specific combination. "Everyone's in the study. Mr. Ashcroft's expecting you."

*Everyone.* My stomach dropped the particular way it had been dropping for two weeks straight, ever since my mother had used the word *stepbrothers*, plural, like it was a minor detail instead of the entire architecture of my new life.

There were four of them, arranged around the study like a jury, and I catalogued them the way I catalogue anything that scares me — fast, clinical, details first, feelings later.

The eldest stood by the window, arms crossed, dark suit even though it was a Saturday, and didn't offer his hand when Warren Ashcroft introduced him as Julian. His eyes swept over me once, assessing and utterly unimpressed, and I felt something in my chest go cold at the deliberate blankness of it — like he'd already decided, before I'd said a single word, exactly how much of his attention I was worth.

The second, Theo, gave me a nod that barely qualified as acknowledgment, already turning back to his phone before Warren had finished the introduction, and I got the distinct impression that whatever warmth this family possessed, it had been rationed out unevenly and Theo hadn't been given much of a share.

The third — Sebastian, tall, quiet, a scar through one eyebrow that made my pulse do something strange and unhelpful the second I noticed it — didn't look at me at all. He looked at a point somewhere over my shoulder, jaw tight, and murmured something that might have been a greeting if it had bothered to include actual words.

And the fourth, the youngest, was already crossing the room before Warren could introduce him properly, hand extended, grin wide and entirely unguarded in a way that made the other three look even colder by comparison.

"Finn," he said. "Don't mind them, they're allergic to fun. I've been dying to meet you — Dad wouldn't shut up about how you're some kind of art history genius, is that true, or is that just Dad exaggerating again—"

"Finn." Warren's voice held gentle warning.

"What? I'm being welcoming. Someone has to be." Finn didn't let go of my hand, grinning at me like I was the most interesting thing to happen to this house in years, and I felt some of the tension in my chest ease slightly under the sheer, uncomplicated force of it. "Ignore Julian, he thinks smiling causes wrinkles. Theo communicates exclusively in grunts before noon. And Sebastian's just — " Finn glanced at his older brother, something flickering behind his easy grin that I couldn't quite read. "Sebastian's had a weird week."

Sebastian's jaw tightened further. He still didn't look at me.

It was Julian who finally broke the silence properly, voice flat and cool in a way that made the room's temperature feel like it dropped several degrees. "We should be clear about something, Miss Calloway, since my father seems disinclined to say it himself." His eyes found mine, dark and unreadable. "This house runs on order. Rules. A certain amount of distance that keeps four brothers from killing each other under one roof. I'd suggest you learn the shape of that distance quickly, for everyone's comfort."

"Julian," Warren said, sharper now.

"I'm being welcoming too," Julian said, without an ounce of warmth in it. "Just a different kind."

I held his gaze, refusing to be the first to look away, some old, familiar stubbornness rising up under the nerves. "I'll learn the house rules," I said evenly. "I'm sure I'll pick them up faster than you're expecting."

Something flickered behind Julian's cold composure — surprise, maybe, or the first flicker of reassessment — and across the room, one of the other three went very slightly, deliberately still, in a way none of the others did.

I didn't catch which one. I was still looking at Julian.

That was the problem, I'd realize later, replaying this exact moment more times than I'd ever admit — I had no name to search for, no face I'd let myself memorize on purpose, nothing to go on except a voice in the dark and the particular, careful way a stranger had once said *I'd rather not know yours either.* Somewhere in this room stood a boy who knew exactly how my breath had caught at 2 a.m. three nights ago, and he was looking at me now with a stranger's face and giving absolutely nothing away.

I just didn't know, yet, that he was looking at all.

MIA'S POV I found out about the party by accident, the way I seemed to find out about everything in that house — a text left open on the kitchen counter, Finn's phone lighting up while he ran upstairs for his jacket, a single line glowing on the screen before it locked itself again.*Everyone's already at the lake house. Don't bring the new girl.*Don't bring the new girl.I stood there in the kitchen for a long moment, feeling something hot and humiliating climb up the back of my throat. Three days since the terrace. Three days of Sebastian being careful and distant, of Finn being just slightly too bright, of Julian watching all of us like a man cataloguing a problem he hadn't decided how to solve yet — and apparently, underneath all of it, there'd been a whole other life happening without me. A party. A lake house. A version of this family that closed ranks the second I wasn't looking.I told myself I didn't care. I told myself that twice, which was becoming a habit with me, and it

  • FOURFOLD OBSESSION: Chained By Their Desires    CHAPTER SIX: THE GAME NOBODY ELSE KNEW

MIA'S POV Warren announced the dinner party at breakfast like it was nothing — *just a few of my colleagues, nothing formal, wear something nice* — and I watched all four of his sons react in four completely different ways, and hated myself a little for cataloguing that too.Julian didn't look up from his coffee. Theo asked what time, the only question he apparently thought was worth the words. Finn groaned theatrically about ties. And Sebastian went very still for exactly one second before agreeing, easily, like the stillness had never happened at all.I was starting to think I was losing my mind. Everything was a clue now. Every pause, every inflection, every time one of them reached for a glass instead of answering me directly — I'd turned this house into a crime scene and myself into the world's least qualified detective, and the worst part was I couldn't stop.So when Warren mentioned, almost as an afterthought, that his sons would need to help "look after" the twelve-year-old d

  • FOURFOLD OBSESSION: Chained By Their Desires    CHAPTER FIVE: PROCESS OF ELIMINATION

MIA'S POV I didn't confront Sebastian. I'd meant to — I'd walked out onto that terrace with the whole accusation loaded and ready — but the moment I saw his face, careful and closed and giving away exactly nothing, I lost my nerve for a different reason than I expected.I realized I didn't actually want it to be a confrontation. I wanted it to be true. And those were two very different things to want at six in the morning with no sleep behind me."You're staring," Sebastian said, without turning around."Am I?""You've been staring since you walked out here. It's a specific kind of staring. I'd like to know what I did to earn it."*Everything*, I almost said. *Nothing. I don't actually know yet, and that's the problem.*"Julian said you've been in a mood for three days," I said instead, testing. "Since right before I arrived."Something shifted behind his eyes — there and gone so fast I couldn't have sworn to it in a courtroom. "Julian talks too much before he's had coffee.""That's

  • FOURFOLD OBSESSION: Chained By Their Desires    CHAPTER FOUR: THE WATCH

MIA'S POV I didn't sleep. I lay in an unfamiliar bed doing the same math over and over — *nothing memorable* against *that night*, Sebastian's careful stillness against the crack in his voice right before Finn's interruption — and by six in the morning I'd talked myself into three different conclusions and out of all of them twice. So when I couldn't stand my own head anymore, I went looking for coffee, and found Julian already in the kitchen instead, dressed for a Sunday like it was a Monday board meeting, reading something on his phone with the particular stillness of a man who resented being interrupted before he'd finished his first cup."You're up early," he said, not looking up."Jet lag." It was becoming my default excuse for everything, and it wasn't even entirely a lie. "You're up early too.""I'm always up early. It's the only part of the day nobody else has ruined yet." He said it dryly, but there was something almost like humor underneath it, the first hint I'd caught tha

  • FOURFOLD OBSESSION: Chained By Their Desires    CHAPTER THREE: FOUR VOICES IN THE DARK

MIA'S POV My room was on the third floor, at the end of a hallway that smelled like fresh paint and old money, and the first thing I did once the door clicked shut behind me was sit on the edge of an unfamiliar bed and try to remember his voice. Not the words. The words I had memorized without trying — *I'd rather not know yours either* — but words could belong to anyone. What I needed was the shape of it. The particular low register, the way it had dropped a half-step quieter right before he said something he meant. I closed my eyes in a stranger's guest room and replayed three nights ago like a recording I was only allowed to hear once, and by the time Warren knocked on my door to call me down for dinner, I had exactly nothing to show for it except a headache and four faces I couldn't stop comparing to a voice in the dark.Dinner was its own kind of ambush. The dining room was long enough that conversation had to travel, which meant most of it didn't bother — Warren talked, mostly
