Chapter 5

ผู้เขียน: Lola
My hand trembled as I answered the call.

“Aria, I’m downstairs. Come down for a minute. I need to see you.”

Wasn’t he… supposed to be in Canada by now? Could he have remembered my condition and decided to stay and complete our mating bond after all?

I struggled out of bed. My fading wolf spirit made me so weak I could barely stand, but I slowly, deliberately, made my way outside.

Maybe this would be the last time I ever saw him.

Downstairs, Logan was waiting for me, bathed in the cool light of the moon.

“Aria, I wanted to apologize for last night,” he began, his brow furrowing as he took in my appearance. “You look terrible. Are you sick?”

I just shook my head, conserving my strength.

“I know you’re probably disappointed, but Lila’s situation is really serious,” Logan continued, his voice earnest. “The healer said the wolf toxin in her system is a rare type. She needs a special serum from Canada and has to get there within forty-eight hours, or she could die.”

My last glimmer of hope was extinguished. He wasn’t here to choose me; he was just here to deliver his final decision.

“Why does it have to be you?” I asked, the words costing me more than he could ever know. “She could find someone else. You could send someone with her.”

Logan frowned. “Aria, are you being unreasonable? How can I let her go alone in her condition? And I wouldn’t trust anyone else with this.”

“So you can just abandon me?”

“I didn’t abandon you; I postponed the ceremony,” he said, his tone matter-of-fact. “When I get back, I’ll give you an even grander mating ceremony, better than we ever planned.”

I closed my eyes, my own wolf spirit withering inside me.

Less than six hours until the full moon.

“Logan, if I told you I was dying, would you stay?” I looked straight into his eyes, laying my last shred of hope bare.

Logan stared at me for a long second, then chuckled. “Come on, Aria, stop being so dramatic. Why are you competing with a fragile human for my attention?”

Just then, his phone rang.

The screen showed “Lila.”

He answered instantly.

“Lila? What’s wrong?” His voice softened with concern. “Is the pain bad? Okay, don’t move. I’m on my way over right now. We’ll leave for Canada immediately.”

After hanging up, he pulled me into a quick, hurried hug.

“Aria, I have to go. It’s an emergency with Lila,” he whispered in my ear. “Wait for me. When I get back, I’ll make you my Luna. I’ll give you the perfect mating ceremony.”

Then he let me go and strode toward the car waiting at the curb.

I just stood there and watched the taillights of his car disappear into the night.

The moonlight spilled over my pale face. I touched the nape of my neck. It was still bare.

In five hours, I would be dead.

And Logan, the Alpha I had loved for so many years, was on his way to the airport, ready to leave the country with another woman.

He never believed I would die. And he never believed I would leave him.

In the car, Logan glanced in the rearview mirror at Aria’s solitary figure, silhouetted by the moon.

Her lonely form sent a sharp, inexplicable pain through him, an Alpha instinct screaming that he was losing something vital.

Logan stared at her shrinking silhouette, his heart clenching painfully. He had a powerful, primal urge to tell the driver to turn around, to go back and hold her and tell her he wasn’t leaving.

Just as he was about to speak, his phone rang.

It was Lila.

Logan looked at the glowing screen and said nothing.

As the private jet was about to take off, Logan fussed over a sleeping Lila while giving clipped orders to his assistant.

“Book the best hotel, I want the entire top floor,” Logan said in a low voice. “And contact the finest jewelry designer. I want to commission a one-of-a-kind set for Aria.”

“Alpha, what’s the budget?”

“There is no budget.” Logan glanced at Lila’s pale face. “I’m giving Aria the best of everything as a gift for the mating ceremony.”

Logan was confident his lavish gifts would make Aria happy.

“Also, I want to re-plan the mating ceremony. Make it three times bigger. Invite every notable family in the shifter community.”

After giving his orders, Logan gently touched Lila’s forehead. Her temperature was still high; she really did seem to be in agony.

“Don’t worry, we’re about to take off. We’ll be there soon,” he murmured.

As the plane taxied down the runway, Logan suddenly remembered something. “I recall the pack healer saying Aria’s wolf spirit was weak,” he said to his assistant. “That I had to get back and mark her before her first heat, or she would die. Contact the healer, find out the exact timing. Then arrange our schedule in Canada. Make sure nothing delays my return to Aria’s side.”

A moment later, his assistant’s voice trembled. “Alpha… Aria’s first heat. It’s tonight. The full moon.”

Logan froze, his gaze shooting to the vast, round moon outside the window.

A cold sweat broke out on his back. He roared, “Stop this plane!”

After Logan left, the buzz in the ballroom slowly returned to normal.Gabriel pulled me closer, whispering in my ear, “Are you okay?”“I’m perfect,” I answered honestly, a smile touching my lips for the first time that evening. “With you by my side, everything is better than I ever could have imagined.”Seeing Logan’s pain hadn’t brought me joy or heartache. Just a profound sense of release. A chapter, finally and truly, closed.“I’m proud of you,” Gabriel said, kissing my forehead. “You are so strong.”Just then, his phone vibrated. He glanced at the caller ID, his brow furrowing.“Excuse me, my love. I have to take this.” He stepped slightly away.“Gabriel?” A weak, desperate voice crackled from the phone. It was Lila. “Please, you have to help me… I know you have influence, you can…”“Lila,” Gabriel’s voice was as cold as ice. “You have the wrong number.”“Gabriel, don’t hang up! I know you know what’s happening to me!” Lila’s voice choked with tears. “Logan abandoned me, the packs

The Manhattan pack’s quarterly gathering was held in the grand ballroom of the city’s most luxurious hotel. The moment Gabriel and I walked in, my hand in his, every head turned. A wave of whispers followed us.“Isn’t that Aria?” someone gasped.“But she’s supposed to be dead…”“What is she doing with Alpha Gabriel?”Unfazed, Gabriel guided me to the head table. As one of the most powerful Alphas in North America, his presence alone commanded the room. He raised his glass, and his voice carried effortlessly across the silent hall.“Everyone,” he began, “I would like to introduce you to my mate, Aria.”The ballroom erupted into a cacophony of shocked gasps and scattered applause. And just then, a familiar figure appeared in the doorway.Logan.He was a ghost of his former self—gaunt, exhausted, his cheeks hollow and his eyes ringed with darkness. The proud, confident Alpha aura he once radiated was gone, replaced by a heavy shroud of weariness. When his gaze landed on me, he froze as if

A week later, I had mostly recovered my strength. Gabriel took me on long walks every day, acquainting me with the Manhattan pack’s territory. It was a world away from my old home—gleaming, modern, and prosperous, the werewolf community here was powerful and sleekly organized.“Aria!” My mother’s friend, Sarah, scurried over, her face alight with gossipy glee. “Have you heard the latest about Logan and that human, Lila?”I glanced at Gabriel, who gave a subtle nod. Sarah was the biggest news source in the entire community; if it happened, she knew about it.“What is it?” I asked.“Well, Logan launched a full investigation into Lila and found out she didn’t just fake the wolf attack—she’s been pulling scams her whole life!” Sarah lowered her voice conspiratorially. “I heard that when he confronted her, the little viper finally showed her true colors!”Gabriel listened quietly beside me, a placid expression on his face.“What did she say?”“Admitted everything! Called Logan an idiot to h

Gabriel gently wiped away the tears I hadn’t realized were falling.“Don’t cry. It’s all over,” he said softly. “I should have told you everything sooner.”“When did you start investigating Lila?” I asked, my voice thick.“From the first time she made you cry.” Gabriel’s hand stroked my hair. “Remember that day, about four months after your engagement to Logan? You sat in a coffee shop and wept for a whole afternoon.”I froze. That was the first time Logan had canceled on me for Lila. I had waited alone in that cafe until they closed.“You saw me?”“I had just returned from a trip. I went to see you, only to find you huddled alone in a corner,” Gabriel said, his eyes clouding with the memory. “I wanted so badly to go to you, to hold you and tell you that you deserved so much better.”“Why didn’t you?”“Because your eyes were still full of hope for him,” he said with a sad smile. “I knew that if I approached you then, you would have seen it as pity from a stranger. I decided that watchi

Three days later, I woke up in an unfamiliar, sun-drenched room.Light streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating a large, soft bed where I lay tucked beneath a plush woolen blanket.Best of all, my wolf spirit felt steady and strong within me. The profound weakness that had plagued me for years was gone.“You’re awake.”Gabriel’s deep voice came from the doorway. He entered carrying a tray laden with a plate of sizzling lamb chops, my favorite. He wore a simple white shirt and black trousers that did little to hide the powerful lines of his body, looking even more handsome in the light of day.“Where am I?” I struggled to sit up.He immediately set the tray down and was at my side, gently helping me and propping a pillow behind my back.“My private villa in Manhattan,” he said, perching on the edge of the bed. “You’ve been unconscious for three days. Your parents were beside themselves with worry.”“My parents? Where are they?”“I’ve settled them in the Manhattan pack ter

The clock struck midnight as the moon climbed to its zenith.I lay in bed, feeling my wolf spirit slipping away, piece by piece. It was a slow, receding tide, pulling all the life from me.“Aria! Hold on!” My mother’s voice sounded distant, though she gripped my hand tightly. “The healer is almost here!”I tried to answer, to reassure her, but no sound came out.My eyelids felt like lead, the world around me blurring and fading to gray.“Her temperature is dropping!” My father’s voice cracked. “Her wolf spirit… it’s leaving her! They said she could get treatment in Manhattan. How could this be happening?”My mother’s choked sobs filled the room as she clutched the family moonstone, a desperate attempt to summon the pack healer faster.I wanted to comfort her, to tell her it was alright, but I couldn't even lift a finger. As my consciousness began to fray, the healer rushed into the room. I heard his heavy, sorrowful sigh.“I warned them,” the healer said, his voice grim. “I told both A
