Chapter 8

Author: White Sand
Furious, Peter grabbed Daisy by the hair and slammed her head against the wall. Blood started streaming down her face, staining the wall red.

What was going on? Why was Peter acting like that?

I trembled as I tried to pull him off her, but he kicked me in the stomach. It hurt so bad that I thought I was going to pass out.

"I've been wondering how that brat could solve those questions when he's barely even been to school. Were you the one teaching him all along? Tell me. Have you been acting crazy all these years?"

But Daisy didn't seem to feel the pain or understand what Peter was saying. She just kept giggling to herself.

Teach me? But Daisy was just a village woman. What could she possibly have taught me?

And how could Daisy even be acting crazy? That was impossible.

My mind was in a mess, and the pain in my stomach made it impossible to think clearly. All I could think about was that I had to save Daisy. If I didn't do that, Peter might end up killing her.

I crawled over and grabbed Peter's pant leg. "Dad! Dad! Please stop hitting her! Mom didn't teach me anything. It was Betsy!

"Sometimes, I'd run into Betsy in the mornings when I was gathering food for the pig. She knew I wanted to go to school, so she lent me her textbooks. I learned everything on my own."

Hearing that, he gradually stopped.

Peter looked at me, then at Daisy. What I had said seemed to make perfect sense. After all, it didn't seem like she was pretending to be crazy.

He kicked her back onto the worn-out bedding. Even though her filthy fingers were covered in blood, she still put them in her mouth and giggled.

Peter then dragged me over to Betsy's home and demanded to know if what I had said was true.

Betsy knew right away that I must have had a reason for saying that, so she nodded.

"It's true. I could tell Nathan seemed eager to learn, so I lent him my textbooks."

Peter finally believed me and took me home.

Late that night, I lay in bed, listening to Peter's snores. Still, I couldn't fall asleep.

I had no idea what had gotten into Peter today. Compared to Daisy, he seemed like the crazier one.

I replayed everything in my mind over and over again. Something felt off, but I couldn't put my finger on what.

  • Fail the Exam and Die   Chapter 17

Once I was back to being myself, everything that had happened felt like a dream. Whenever I thought about how ignorant I had been, I couldn't help but laugh at myself. Of course, many people could change their lives by working hard. But for others, they had no control over their own fate. How could they ever climb out of despair when no one was there to help them? With that, I finally made up my mind. Three days later, despite the principal's attempts to get me to stay, I submitted my resignation letter. As I boarded the train with my suitcase, I felt incredibly relieved. Vanessa was still sitting in the run-down office. There were streaks of gray hair in her low ponytail. The moment I knocked on the door, Vanessa looked up at me. I smiled. "Good day, ma'am. I'm Alex Towne, and I'm here as a volunteer teacher."

In the end, Betsy was rescued from the village too. After a thorough investigation, the police discovered that Daisy wasn't the only woman who had been abducted and brought to Moore Village. There were three in total. The plump man was the biggest human trafficker in the area. He had ruined the lives of many children. Given the severity of his crimes, he was sentenced to death. Even though Peter never managed to sell me, there was no question that he would be convicted of unlawful imprisonment and human trafficking. For those crimes, he was sentenced to five years in prison. Three days later, an elderly couple showed up at the police station. They held Daisy in their arms and wept. They were Daisy's parents. Even after all these years, they never gave up searching for her.Later, Daisy took Betsy and me to the city, where we would take our college entrance exam. I tutored Betsy relentlessly in the last few months before the exam. In the end, we were both admitted to the best

It turned out to be Vanessa. Her face was pressed against the cowshed window, and I saw several male teachers behind her. Vanessa whispered, "We're going to break the window and help you out of here."But the cowshed window had iron bars. I had no idea how long it would take to destroy them.I shook my head and began moving the bricks, one at a time. Finally, I squeezed through the tiny opening, with Daisy right behind me. There was no wall behind the cowshed. It was nothing but a dense, lush woodland in the mountains. All of us hurried into the woods and did not look back. By the time we got to the village entrance, everything was in chaos. Betsy stood in front of a group of police officers, arguing with the villagers. Many officers had arrived, and several police cars were there too. However, the villagers stood their ground, holding hoes and shovels. The officers couldn't do anything. Maurice kept trying to drag Betsy away. "You're so silly. Human trafficking? I've liv

Outside the window, Betsy was looking at me anxiously. She was part of my backup plan. The last time she came home to see her parents, I told her about my plan to escape. One day, while I was at school, Betsy rushed over from Moore Village and asked how she could be of help. I looked at her. "If I reach out to you at Vance Village in five days, you could help me escape. But if you don't hear from me in five days, come find me."Today happened to be the fifth day. Betsy stood by the window. She was so worried that she was about to cry. I was afraid she would be discovered if she stuck around for too long. All I said was, "Call the cops, and bring more people with you."With tears in her eyes, Betsy nodded and hurried off.Sure enough, not long after she left, Peter came into the yard to relieve himself. Daisy and I quickly pretended to be fast asleep. He came over to check on us. Since nothing seemed unusual, he walked away, humming to himself.I sneered. Peter could en

  • Fail the Exam and Die   Chapter 13

In the dead of the night, the drinking outside finally died down. Peter and the plump man's loud snores told me they were probably asleep.Daisy and I couldn't fall asleep. I wanted to ask her a few questions, but I was afraid someone might be eavesdropping. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. Then something occurred to me. I was a Jarlish teacher. I was certain no one in Moore village could understand Jarlish.I asked, "Can you speak Jarlish?"Daisy froze before nodding. So she really hadn't lost her mind. That night, we conversed in Jarlish about what was going on. Back then, Daisy was a college student who had been abducted and brought here. She tried to escape, but she was captured and brought back every time. Later, Daisy had Nathan. From that day on, she stopped resisting and pretended to cooperate with the family, earning their trust completely. When Nathan was five, Daisy tried to escape again. This time, she made it farther than she ever did before. In the

Peter raised his hand to slap me. He swung his huge palm toward my face, but it stopped short of hitting me.It was only because the plump man said, "Don't hit him too hard. He might not be able to work if you do…"What on earth were they up to?Peter went back to lock the gate. The plump man stayed where he was, scrutinizing me from head to toe, his eyes like those of a venomous snake. He looked at me as if I were nothing more than merchandise. Peter and the plump man shoved me ahead. No matter how hard I struggled, they still managed to get me into the cowshed. Daisy was still huddled in a corner, and the plump man seemed to recognize her. The plump man walked around Daisy twice before saying reproachfully, "She was clean and presentable when she came here. What did you do to her?"Peter raised an eyebrow. "You're the one to talk. She lost her mind after giving me a son, and she couldn't give me any more children. I spent 20,000 dollars for a crazy woman."The plump man lo
