Chapter 9

Author: White Sand
Ever since Betsy lied for me, we grew closer.

I really admired how down-to-earth and hardworking she was. She always kept her head up, her eyes fixed on the blackboard. I had heard she fought hard with her family just to go to school.

We went to school together and walked home together afterward. Along the way, we would confide in each other.

Betsy told me she dreamed of going to college and becoming a teacher.

The teaching at the high school was really awful. I knew that even if she gave it her all, her chances of passing the college entrance exam were really slim, let alone getting into college.

So I decided to tutor Betsy every day after class. That way, she would have a better chance of getting into college.

Betsy's eyes lit up. "Nathan, you're really brilliant. Are you some kind of genius?"

I chuckled sheepishly. I didn't dare tell her that I was actually a teacher.

But I never imagined that Betsy, who dreamed of going to college, would never get to fulfill her dream.

We used to meet at the village entrance every day. But that day, she didn't show up at all.

Perhaps she had been held up at home.

Confused, I walked into the classroom, only to find her seat empty.

Maybe she was sick.

Over the next few days, there was no sign of Betsy at all.

Finally, I couldn't sit around any longer. After school, I made a beeline for Maurice's house at the far end of the village.

Maurice Bell was a scrawny old man who liked smoking tobacco, just like Peter.

I hurried over to him, gasping for breath. "Where's Betsy? Why hasn't she been going to school?"

He refused to look at me. "She's getting married. She won't be going to school anymore."

I thought I heard someone crying inside the house.

I felt my mind go blank. Before I knew it, I shouted, "She's getting married? But she hasn't even finished school!"

He shot me a glance and chuckled. "Are you stupid or what? She's getting married soon. Why bother going to school?"

I tried to protest. "But Betsy's a great student. She can definitely get into college!"

"What's the point of going to college?" He snorted. "No matter how good her grades are, she'll eventually marry someone. I already found her a good husband. That's what's really best for her."

Maurice continued, "You're not the only one trying to talk me out of it. Vanessa already came by several times. I'm telling you—I'm not going to change my mind!"

A chill ran through me. I wanted to run into the courtyard and see Betsy, but Maurice held me back and shoved me to the ground.

The gravel dug into my palms, making them sting.

Maurice yelled, "Get lost!"

By then, several villagers had already gathered around to see what was going on, including Peter. When he saw what had happened, he hurried over, pulled me up, and repeatedly apologized to Maurice.

The villagers kept whispering and pointing at me. I knew I would be in for another beating when I got home.

The truth was, I was already numb to the beatings. What really scared me was the idea of the children in the mountains ending up like Betsy.

They would get married and remain stuck in the mountains, feeding pigs and chickens and doing farm work for the rest of their lives. They would never get to go to college.

  • Fail the Exam and Die   Chapter 17

Once I was back to being myself, everything that had happened felt like a dream. Whenever I thought about how ignorant I had been, I couldn't help but laugh at myself. Of course, many people could change their lives by working hard. But for others, they had no control over their own fate. How could they ever climb out of despair when no one was there to help them? With that, I finally made up my mind. Three days later, despite the principal's attempts to get me to stay, I submitted my resignation letter. As I boarded the train with my suitcase, I felt incredibly relieved. Vanessa was still sitting in the run-down office. There were streaks of gray hair in her low ponytail. The moment I knocked on the door, Vanessa looked up at me. I smiled. "Good day, ma'am. I'm Alex Towne, and I'm here as a volunteer teacher."

In the end, Betsy was rescued from the village too. After a thorough investigation, the police discovered that Daisy wasn't the only woman who had been abducted and brought to Moore Village. There were three in total. The plump man was the biggest human trafficker in the area. He had ruined the lives of many children. Given the severity of his crimes, he was sentenced to death. Even though Peter never managed to sell me, there was no question that he would be convicted of unlawful imprisonment and human trafficking. For those crimes, he was sentenced to five years in prison. Three days later, an elderly couple showed up at the police station. They held Daisy in their arms and wept. They were Daisy's parents. Even after all these years, they never gave up searching for her.Later, Daisy took Betsy and me to the city, where we would take our college entrance exam. I tutored Betsy relentlessly in the last few months before the exam. In the end, we were both admitted to the best

It turned out to be Vanessa. Her face was pressed against the cowshed window, and I saw several male teachers behind her. Vanessa whispered, "We're going to break the window and help you out of here."But the cowshed window had iron bars. I had no idea how long it would take to destroy them.I shook my head and began moving the bricks, one at a time. Finally, I squeezed through the tiny opening, with Daisy right behind me. There was no wall behind the cowshed. It was nothing but a dense, lush woodland in the mountains. All of us hurried into the woods and did not look back. By the time we got to the village entrance, everything was in chaos. Betsy stood in front of a group of police officers, arguing with the villagers. Many officers had arrived, and several police cars were there too. However, the villagers stood their ground, holding hoes and shovels. The officers couldn't do anything. Maurice kept trying to drag Betsy away. "You're so silly. Human trafficking? I've liv

Outside the window, Betsy was looking at me anxiously. She was part of my backup plan. The last time she came home to see her parents, I told her about my plan to escape. One day, while I was at school, Betsy rushed over from Moore Village and asked how she could be of help. I looked at her. "If I reach out to you at Vance Village in five days, you could help me escape. But if you don't hear from me in five days, come find me."Today happened to be the fifth day. Betsy stood by the window. She was so worried that she was about to cry. I was afraid she would be discovered if she stuck around for too long. All I said was, "Call the cops, and bring more people with you."With tears in her eyes, Betsy nodded and hurried off.Sure enough, not long after she left, Peter came into the yard to relieve himself. Daisy and I quickly pretended to be fast asleep. He came over to check on us. Since nothing seemed unusual, he walked away, humming to himself.I sneered. Peter could en

In the dead of the night, the drinking outside finally died down. Peter and the plump man's loud snores told me they were probably asleep.Daisy and I couldn't fall asleep. I wanted to ask her a few questions, but I was afraid someone might be eavesdropping. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. Then something occurred to me. I was a Jarlish teacher. I was certain no one in Moore village could understand Jarlish.I asked, "Can you speak Jarlish?"Daisy froze before nodding. So she really hadn't lost her mind. That night, we conversed in Jarlish about what was going on. Back then, Daisy was a college student who had been abducted and brought here. She tried to escape, but she was captured and brought back every time. Later, Daisy had Nathan. From that day on, she stopped resisting and pretended to cooperate with the family, earning their trust completely. When Nathan was five, Daisy tried to escape again. This time, she made it farther than she ever did before. In the

Peter raised his hand to slap me. He swung his huge palm toward my face, but it stopped short of hitting me.It was only because the plump man said, "Don't hit him too hard. He might not be able to work if you do…"What on earth were they up to?Peter went back to lock the gate. The plump man stayed where he was, scrutinizing me from head to toe, his eyes like those of a venomous snake. He looked at me as if I were nothing more than merchandise. Peter and the plump man shoved me ahead. No matter how hard I struggled, they still managed to get me into the cowshed. Daisy was still huddled in a corner, and the plump man seemed to recognize her. The plump man walked around Daisy twice before saying reproachfully, "She was clean and presentable when she came here. What did you do to her?"Peter raised an eyebrow. "You're the one to talk. She lost her mind after giving me a son, and she couldn't give me any more children. I spent 20,000 dollars for a crazy woman."The plump man lo
