Having filled the small table with tissues, Josey finally relieved herself of all the tears that would come. Tossing the finished coffee and tissues in the trash, she started her tirade of deep cleaning in the bathroom finally.
Several hours had passed and she had managed to conquer over a dozen colonies of dust bunnies, rivers of loose hair and unidentified hidden crumbs under the sofa.
Even in Emily’s room she obtained a trash can full of paper bits, tossed sketches, and the occasional snuck snack wrapper. Her sister's hobby for drawing and tossing, could fill a landfill in no time.
After making her bed, Josey laid on her back and stared at the ceiling. Cece had sent her a message earlier saying they will be texting those that passed, later in evening, and that Mrs. Avery wouldn’t budge on the names.
Taking a deep breath Josey closed her eyes and decided on a catnap. It was only 2:30 so she could rest until 4:30 before she headed over to the apartment office. She easily slipped into sleep.
The music on the merry-go-round sounded a lot like her phone, Josey thought. Looking around the amusement park as she gently glided up and down, she suddenly noticed it was empty. All the fiberglass animals that were centered between golden spiral poles, were empty as well. Not a single body sat occupying their seat. Panic took over and Josey attempted to get off, but the spinning started faster and faster. Holding on for dear life, Josey started to scream.
Bolting up in bed, covered in sweat, dizziness over took her when she opened her eyes. Her phone’s alarm was blaring the same melody from her dream.
Tussling her hair in frustration at the quick nightmare and patting her cheeks, her eyes started regaining focus. Grabbing her phone, she swiped the alarm off and noticed it was already 4:45. She thought for a moment and then yelped, jumping out of bed.
“I’m gonna be late! Why didn’t I hear my alarm?” Josey yelled out as she pulled her hair into a fluffy bun on top of her head. Her house cloths were fine enough to wear out, it was just signing a new lease, no reason to get dressed up.
After grabbing the paper work she had to bring with her off the table, along with the paper from her purse, she slipped on her sneakers and headed out the door.
The sun was near the horizon already from it being close to fall. The leaves on the trees had yet to start changing and still showed life with their green colors hanging high above the sidewalk.
It was quitting time for a lot of people that worked normal jobs, so the bus stops were again getting full. Josey felt a tug at her emotions when she noticed the women standing in heels and their nice business outfits. She wanted that so desperately.
Checking her phone after walking several blocks, she had arrived at the apartment office a minute early. Thankful for at least that, she hurried in.
The bell on the door chimed and she heard the raspy sound of Agatha’s voice.
“Josey dear, I was worried you wouldn’t make it!” the older lady behind the desk said.
“Ah, well, here I am!” Josey said nervously glancing around the office that was decorated like museum now.
Rather than the cozy plaid couch and pictures of homes and apartments for rent she remembered, it was all cold black and greys with the occasional white trim breaking it up. Even the Home Sweet Home sign was no longer hanging above the desk.
“Uh, Agatha, what happened? Did you guys get a new decorator?” Josey asked the lady behind the now marble top desk.
Agatha laughed as she rolled her eyes.
“No dear, we got a new owner, who is waiting for you through those doors. Better hurry along, this one is stiffer than a board.” Agatha whispered.
Josey giggled and nodded and headed for the freshly painted grey door. Whoever the new owner was, they obviously needed a little color in their life.
Opening the door and not even having a chance to look at her surroundings, Josey suddenly froze at the voice coming from behind her.
“Are you able to read a clock? You’re officially 3 minutes late. I take it you don’t find being on time, very important?” the voice said sternly.
Turning around, Josey’s mind shattered in surprise. It was indeed the same Mr. Stormway that saved her early this morning, and ruined her interview. She knew this was not good. How could she ask someone like him for an extension or payment plan?
“It’s you. Well, I’m not surprised. Have a seat. I hope you saved both of us time and brought with you the forms?” Tarrin asked, recognizing her immediately.
Closing her mouth that was hanging open, Josey sat at the hard wooden topped table. Pulling out the forms she filled out earlier from the envelope, she took small glances at him.
He wasn’t wearing his suit jacket and she noticed his white dress shirt hugged at places on his arms. Trying not to notice anything else, she just stared at the table as she pushed the papers across the to him.
“Have you reviewed everything carefully? Including the 8% deposit increase?” Tarrin asked her, raising an eyebrow.
Still staring at the table, Josey just nodded while trying to build courage in asking for an extension. Her apartment was on the line and she needed to get it over with anyway.
“Yes, but I need an extension on the date. I can’t come up with that amount of money in such a short time.” Josey said flatly to the table.
Tarrin just stared at her while she talked to the table. Feeling a bit offended at her actions, he kicked the table slightly causing a loud thud. Seeing her jump and look at him finally, he could tell she was sacred of him. Tarrin was used to it, as it was nothing new to him.
“I think 30 days is more than enough time provided.” He responded, watching her.
“No, it isn’t, if you’re living on a budget. If you can’t do an extension, the I am willing to do a payment plan. I can pay a little bit each week. It would only take me about 6 months.” Seeing her get braver as she said this, he just grinned.
“I don’t think you understand. The payment is due in 30 days. Not in payments, not in 6 months. If you can’t meet the requirements stated in the lease, then you can vacate the residence in 3 days as it says in the notice.”
“Huh? Where does it say that?” Josey grabbed the papers that were in front of him and scanned through them.
She was sure she read everything. Suddenly remembering the first notice she was handed from the previous owner, she reached into the envelope. She had grabbed it from her purse on the way out the door and shoved it in the envelope just in case it was also needed.
Looking over it, she finally came to the last paragraph at the bottom. Her heart sank. She never read it because she was waiting for her job interview.
It stated exactly as he said, 3 days, the lease was up. If a new lease wasn’t signed, she would have to vacate at the end of 3 days. Josey’s temper flared at the ridiculousness of the situation, and the stubbornness of the new owner. Not only did he botch her interview, he now held her and her sister's apartment in his rude hands.
Slamming her hands on the table, Tarrin didn’t flinch but looked at her with curiosity. Such a small female to make such a loud sound he thought to himself. He knew she finally realized it was her mistake for not reading the notice entirely. Yawning on purpose to provoke her further, he waited for her to fight him even more.
“Please. I will do anything you ask if you can give me 4..no, 3 months. Give me just 90 days to come up with the money. I can do it, please.” Her plea sounded pitiful. Tarrin didn’t have a soft heart. This was just business to him, but for some reason he hesitated before answering her.
Tarrin had purchased the apartments at the suggestion of his friend Linux, who claimed it was a good strategical move, now that Tarrin was back at his estate. Tarrin needed the apartments because the land they were located on backed up to his estate, and he could keep his personal life that much more secure having control of the area around. “It’s business, if you refuse to sign the new lease, and provide the 8%, then I suggest you start looking for a new place to live.” He didn’t want to be the bad guy, but he had no choice. Being a softy has only ever landed him in regret. Tarrin eyed her, waiting for her response. The smell of cleaner tickled his throat, and he assumed from her appearance, she must have recently cleaned apartment. Suddenly finding her diligence attractive, he quickly pushed the thought aside. Hearing the finality in Tarrin’s voice pushed Josey’s desperation further. Looking at him, trying not to lose her temper even more and cry pitifully, Josey took a deep brea
Singing happily as if she was riding a fluffy cloud, Josey finished setting the table. She had over done it and cooked too much food she thought, briefly, but decided not to care at that moment. She would be able to face her sister proudly, and soon give her everything under the bright sun. “Oh my gosh Jo! It smells fantastic! Hehe, what's all this for?” Emily had come in the door and kicked off her shoes, practically running to the kitchen from the smell that filled their apartment. Watching her sister shuffle with excitement from the food she cooked, Josey beamed. “Well, as you are usually the one to cook for me, I decided since I had tonight off, I would do the cooking.” Josey said as she smiled. “You got the job?” Emily asked grabbing the back of the kitchen chair. Josey just nodded no, while eyeing the spatula she was holding, with a sad look. She wanted to trick her sister, but failed the moment she looked up to see the excitement start to leave Emily’s eyes. “YES!” J
After having a short talk and laugh with Jared about her day, they said their goodnights and Josey went inside. Suddenly feeling tired, she decided she needed sleep to fuel her shopping trip for tomorrow. She held in a laugh after opening their bedroom door and seeing her sister sleeping with her head laying on the desk, wide mouthed and drooling. She had a bag of snacks in one hand and a pencil in the other. Careful not to disturb her too much, Josey removed the snack bag and pencil before slowly lifting her by her shoulder and helping her over to her bed.Emily murmured something about math then turned over as Josey covered her with the froggy printed comforter.Going over to her own bed, Josey kicked off her slippers and snuggled under her comforter. Thoughts of the new job, the horrible new boss and Jared always popping up to help her raced through her mind before she finally slipped off to sleep.“Jo, I’m headed out! I’ll be back late, a few of us are going to the student council
Tarrin was caught. He didn’t intend on actually following her at first but it ended up happening that way. On his way home from an early morning meeting, he spotted her from the car. He requested that Mara drop him off to walk and get some fresh air. “Fresh air?” She had asked him. “Yes, it seems like a nice day for it.” He responded, not making eye contact. “Emm hmm, if you say so sir.” He caught the rolling of her eyes, but didn’t say anything as she put on the signal light and pulled over. “I’ll call you when I am done getting some fresh air.” Tarrin shut the door after Mara just nodded at him. From helping with fallen tomatoes to the stray cats, Josey would stop and greet, he found her somewhat amusing. At one point she tried petting a small older dog that was chained outside of someone’s door step. The grumpy dog suddenly started barking and nipping at her making her run for her life from it even though it was on a chain. The moment she was far enough away, Tarrin growled at
Josey hadn’t found it odd that she ran into the new landlord while she was shopping, she just assumed he must have had a business meeting in the area. Not really finding anything that would suit her taste, or that she could afford, she decided she would just head back home. Hearing her phone ring as she walked slowly in disappointment, she pulled it out to see it was Jared calling her. “Hey.” she said. “What's up Josey girl? You sound a bit down.” He asked, but Josey really didn’t want a pity party over clothes. “I’m fine, what's up with you?” She asked him. Jared rarely called her on the weekends. “I wanted to see if you wanted to have dinner with me tonight. To celebrate your new job.” Josey’s heart did a pitter patter. It wasn’t really for Jared that it her heart sped up for, it was the food. If he was buying dinner, it meant the food would be better than what she could cook at home. “Sure, absolutely! Emily is eating at with her friends tonight at their student council m
Jared had pulled up at exactly 6:30 to pick Josey up for the dinner outing. The sun was low in the sky and street lights were getting ready to kick on. Grabbing her sneakers, Josey headed out the door. She kept it casual in jeans and a hoodie. The weather was cooler in the evenings, and because she gets cold easily, she figured she wouldn’t get over heated. Jared was standing there, leaning in his car waiting when she came out. “Hey!” She said waving at him as she hopped and skipped, pulling her sneakers on. “Ready?” He asked her while opening the door to the car. “Sure am! Thanks for offering to take me to dinner.” She said as she slid into the black leather seat. He shut the door and got into the driver's side. “Uh yea, my pleasure! Hey, what's with all the security camera’s suddenly popping up around here? There’s a camera even pointed at your door step from the energy pole across the street.” Jared asked Josey curiously. “Oh that? It would be our not so lovely ne
“Yes, and for God's sake, why did you have to go and drag me here? I hate Italian, and I hate low lit places.” Linux whined under his breath. “Do you recognize the man she’s with?” Tarrin asked again, keeping his voice low. Taking several glances at the table, Linux could only see the back of the man's head. “Not really, when they first came in, I thought he looked familiar. Why are you asking?” Linux responded, trying to look natural and cover his mouth so his words wouldn’t carry. “Thats Jared Chaser, from Rapture Investments.” He murmured. “Oh!” Linux almost yelled, slapping the table causing his fork to fly off and clink on the floor. Tarrin shook his head at his friend. Linux quickly reached out a foot and tried scooting the fork back closer. Josey looked over towards them because of the noise and Linux froze with his leg extended out from the table. looking at the ceiling. “I can’t take you anywhere.” Tarrin commented under his breath. Suddenly he and Linux hear
“The dressing wasn’t a big deal. I could have eaten a side salad instead.” Josey said to Jarred as he rushed to start the car.“Oh, well it doesn’t matter, we will have a better time grabbing something and sitting by the beach.” Replying, Jared pasted a fake smile on. He didn’t want to tell her the real reason they left.Jared wanted to protect Josey, but at the same time, he needed to use her. He knew that back in the restaurant things looked weird, but after he confirmed with Josey that Tarrin Stormway was her new landlord, he wanted to ask his friend about the properties located around the apartments. The guy couldn’t keep his perverted mouth shut. He suggested that they take Josey out to get drunk after they eat, and then have a little fun with her before dumping her off at home. Jared didn’t mind the idea, just not with Josey. When Jared declined, his friend questioned his stature, that pissed Jared off so he punched him. So not wanting to deal with him any longer, Jared decided
