Chapter 3

Author: Stars
On the day of the Trials, the exam hall was packed.

This was the biggest test of the year for the entire wolf territory, and nobody wanted to be late.

I got there early, but there was no sign of Vivienne. She finally showed up ten minutes before the exam started, still wearing the strappy dress she'd had on at the bar.

She'd clearly had too much to drink the night before, swaying with every step.

Her mother was holding her up while her father trailed behind them.

Every pair of eyes in the room locked onto her with adoration, including those of my so-called mother, Martha Greer.

The moment I found out Martha wasn't actually my mother, I felt something I didn't expect: relief.

Because now I could hate her without guilt.

She'd abused me my entire childhood. Every time something went wrong in her life, she took it out on me, and my body was always covered in bruises.

She was barely home. Nobody cooked for me, so I collected bottles off the street and sold them for scrap just to eat. Hunger was the only constant in my childhood.

Six months before the Trials, she abandoned me completely. She moved into Vivienne's house full-time to wait on her hand and foot and never came back once.

She didn't leave me a single coin, and I worked part-time just to keep myself alive while studying.

Even when she was around, she made my life hell. Since Vivienne was her real daughter, she couldn't stand the thought of me outperforming her. Whenever she caught me studying, she'd find some way to sabotage me.

I used to wonder why my own mother hated me so much. Now I knew—I was never her daughter.

Even the comments started to feel sorry for me.

[Okay, I feel a little bad for the villain. She's actually the Alpha's real daughter, but she got swapped at birth and ended up in this nightmare. Martha doesn't love her, her real parents don't know she exists, and her future mate doesn't even care about her...]

[But look at her lately—she's been studying SO hard. That doesn't look like someone planning to cheat.]

I caught that last one and couldn't help but smile.

Vivienne stumbled over to me, her breath thick with alcohol. "Elara Whitmore. Looks like someone's feeling confident about the Trials."

I smiled and let her catch a flicker of fake hesitation. "This is my one shot at changing my life. I've been preparing for months."

Vivienne sneered. "Then give it your best shot. I spent a whole month at the Royal Academy, and the professors there wrote this year's exam. I've already won."

She was feeding me that information to bait me into swapping scores, and it was textbook manipulation.

I opened my mouth to respond, but one of Vivienne's bodyguards stepped between us. "Please don't bother Miss Vivienne."

Martha was right behind him. The second she saw me, her hand flew up to slap me, but I twisted sideways just in time to dodge it.

My defiance only made her angrier. She jabbed a finger in my face and screamed, "You little bitch! You're harassing Miss Vivienne before her exam so she'll do badly, aren't you?"

Her voice was loud enough for the whole crowd to hear, and everyone turned to stare with eyes full of contempt for me.

After all, Vivienne was the school's golden girl. If someone had a problem with her, the problem had to be them.

But Vivienne seemed to be in an unusually good mood today. She held Martha back and gave me that trademark smirk.

"Mrs. Greer, she might be trash, but she's still your daughter. Hitting her in public doesn't look great."

On the surface, she was defending me. Underneath, it was pure mockery.

Martha pulled her hand back immediately and bowed her head to Vivienne. "Of course, Miss. You're absolutely right."

Then she turned to me, her expression ice-cold. "Say thank you to Miss Vivienne. Or do I have to force you to your knees?"

She grabbed my shoulder and shoved me down. Before my knees could hit the ground, the bell rang for the exam hall.

Martha let go and shot me one last glare. "If you cause any trouble for Miss Vivienne during the exam, you'll answer to me."

My real parents walked right past me without a word, giving me nothing but a look of disgust.

"Vivienne, get inside. Don't let some lowlife distract you."

That was the first time I'd ever been face to face with my biological parents.

And in that moment, I understood that they didn't want me. Even if I was brought back into their family, nothing would change.

So I stopped hoping, picked up my pen, and walked into the exam hall.

My father announced in front of every camera and reporter that I was his daughter, and the whole territory celebrated the girl who went from nobody to Alpha's heir overnight. But I knew the truth. Swapped parental love doesn't last forever.Growing up in the slums teaches you a few things. If you want to change your life, you have to fight for it, because nobody's going to hand it to you.My father offered me the Alpha position on the spot, but I turned him down."Being Alpha is the dream, I know. But I'm not ready. I don't have the experience yet. Let me work under the Alpha King first and learn how to actually lead. Then I'll come back and do this right."He respected that.I took a position at the Werewolf Bureau and spent the next few years learning everything I could about running a pack.My life was on the upswing while Vivienne's was in free fall. She'd planned to retake the Trials the following year, banking on everything she already knew, but Martha had other ideas. She sold V

In an instant, my parents froze. Their eyes went blank and their bodies went rigid, like puppets with their strings cut.Vivienne panicked. "Mom. Dad. What's wrong with you?"She whipped around to face me. "What did you do to them? Why can't they move?"I said nothing and just smiled. The swap completed. They came back to life, but the warmth in their eyes when they looked at Vivienne was gone, replaced by something cold that looked a lot like disgust.Vivienne didn't notice. She screamed "Mom, Dad" and threw herself at them. The Luna shoved her away.Vivienne froze as my mother turned to me with tears streaming down her face and pulled me into her arms. "My daughter... you've been through so much..."My father's voice cracked. "All these years and we didn't recognize you... How did this happen?""You couldn't have," I said. "This was planned from the beginning. Martha didn't mix us up by accident. She did it on purpose and even used witchcraft to mask our bloodlines so you'd never sen

Silence. Then chaos. The Luna went white, her voice shaking. "What... what did you just say?"Martha's expression twisted. Her plan had been simple: wait for Vivienne to inherit the Alpha title, then reveal the truth and cash in on a lifetime of devotion from her biological daughter. She hadn't expected me to blow the whole thing wide open first.Vivienne was livid. "What the hell are you talking about, Elara?""I'm not making this up." I bit down on my own finger and let the blood run down to my fingertip. "Witchcraft can mask a bloodline, but it can't change the Alpha blood in my veins. All the Alpha has to do is test whether his blood bonds with mine, and that'll prove I'm your daughter."The Alpha, half-skeptical, pricked his own finger. In front of everyone, the two bloodlines merged together on contact. The proof was undeniable. The crowd gasped. They'd come to watch the rich girl humiliate the poor girl, not to stumble into a scandal this explosive. For the first time, the Alpha

I'd seen that move coming a mile away. I'd already removed the Exchange Crystal from the necklace and slipped it into my pocket long before she got her hands on it.Now it was my turn."Funny you mention seeing things with your own eyes. I saw you with mine, spending every night at hotels with random guys for a month straight before the Trials. A zero isn't exactly shocking, is it?"The air around us went dead still.Everyone had seen her party photos, and now the doubt was creeping in fast.Vivienne took a step back, forcing a composure she clearly didn't feel. "So what if I went out a few times? I'm going to inherit my father's Alpha position. I don't need to fight over Trial spots with the rest of you."The Alpha nodded. "That's right. Vivienne is my only heir, and the Alpha position will be hers."With her father backing her up, Vivienne's confidence surged. "If you're so sure I'm lying, Elara, then show everyone your score right now.""I'll be honest with you. I slept through the

Results day. Everyone was waiting with bated breath.Vivienne had arranged a full media circus, just like she promised. Her parents were there, and the school entrance was mobbed. This was supposed to be the most public humiliation of my life, or so they all thought. The livestream hit a million viewers."Elara Whitmore has some nerve going up against Vivienne Cole. Doesn't she know Vivienne's been number one every single time? She spent a whole month at the Royal Academy before the Trials. First place is hers.""Vivienne's the Alpha's daughter. She doesn't even need to study, and she still comes out on top every time.""Must be nice. The gap between people like them and people like us is just... yeah. What does Elara even have to compete with?"The whispers grew louder, every single one doubting me and mocking me.But I had to thank Vivienne for gathering quite the audience for what was about to happen. The comments were buzzing too.[I can't WAIT to see the villain's face when the sc

I locked in from the moment the exam started. After months of sleepless nights and endless studying, these questions were a breeze.I blazed through the paper while the comments kept me updated on Vivienne in real time.[Vivienne fell asleep the second she sat down. Turned in a completely blank exam.][The villain has no idea. She still thinks she's going to swap scores and ride off into the sunset.][But... the villain's actually taking this seriously. She doesn't look like someone planning to cheat at all.]Vivienne figured that even if she failed the Trials, she'd inherit the Alpha position and rule the pack anyway. She was wrong. She didn't carry a single drop of Alpha blood. The witchcraft masking her bloodline could fool people, but it couldn't change biology, and no pack would let someone without Alpha blood take over as Alpha. After the exam, Vivienne was the first one out. She spotted me and flashed a winner's grin. "That was way too easy. Looks like first place is mine again,
