Chapter 2

Author: Quincy Shawn
I went back to our rented apartment. One by one, I tore down the photos covering the wall and fed them into the paper shredder.

At eleven o’clock that night, the door clicked open. Jacob pushed the door open, bringing with him a faint woody scent. It was the exact perfume Ruby always wore.

He loosened his tie, his brow furrowing slightly as he put on a show of exhaustion.

“Nat, get me a glass of water.”

In the past, I would’ve rushed over to him out of worry and handed him a glass of water. Now, I just sat on the sofa, completely still.

“Get it yourself,” I said, my voice flat.

Jacob paused, a look of impatience crossing his eyes. However, he quickly suppressed it, walking over to ruffle my hair.

“What’s wrong? Are you mad because I had too much work today and forgot your birthday?” he said dotingly, but his eyes were lifeless.

He was simply going through the motions.

“No,” I said, tilting my head to avoid his hand. “I forgot too.”

Jacob’s hand froze in midair before he slowly pulled it back. Then, he sat down next to me on the couch.

“Ruby got back from her business trip today, so I went to pick her up from the airport,” he said, bringing it up voluntarily as if testing the waters. “It’s not easy for her to be on her own. We grew up together, and I can’t just ignore her. Be reasonable, and don’t overthink things.”

What a classic line. A perfect mix of belittling and guilt-tripping, all perfectly aligned with Mr. Hill’s KPIs. He was already starting to push the progress bar of breaking my heart.

I stared at the face that had made my heart flutter for three years, and my stomach churned.

“Sure, I’ll be reasonable,” I said, forcing a smile.

Jacob clearly didn’t expect me to be so calm. He blinked in surprise, but then smiled with satisfaction.

“I knew you were the best.”

With that, he got up to take a shower.

Watching him, I pulled out my phone and dialed the number I had blacklisted a long time ago.

“Mr. Hill,” I said calmly.

On the other end of the line, my father’s voice carried his usual, high-and-mighty authority.

“What? Have you had enough of a hard time out there? Are you ready to bow your head?”

“I’m willing to consider the arranged marriage,” I replied as I stared out at the neon lights of the city. “But I want to meet Louis Lane myself.”

My father laughed. “I’m glad you’ve finally come to your senses. Tomorrow night, there is a private yacht party at Victoria Harbour. The head of the Lane family is not someone to be trifled with, so leave your spoiled heiress attitude at home.”

Once the line went dead, I snickered.

Louis Lane, the head of Lanes Corporation, was notorious in our circle for being a cold-blooded tycoon. Rumors in the business circles claimed he was decisive, ruthless, and indifferent to women. He was the exact marriage partner my father was so desperate to pack up and ship off to bed.

My father figured that by giving me to Louis, he could control me while securing the Lane family’s massive resources. However, what he didn’t know was that I had stopped playing the prey a long time ago.

Since the destination was going to be Louis, why should I be the bargaining chip dragged to the negotiating table? If I were going to play, I would be the one sitting at the head of the table, dealing the cards.

The night wind at Victoria Harbour carried the salty scent of seawater. Dressed in a striking red gown and holding a glass of champagne, I stood on the second-floor deck of the yacht.

Jacob hadn’t looked for me tonight. Instead, he had sent a text saying there was an issue with a project and he had to work through the night.

Yet, just moments ago, I had scrolled past a post from Ruby on my feed. It was a photo of two coffee cups with the caption, “With you by my side, working overtime doesn’t feel tiring at all.”

I liked the post and locked my screen. Even drama gets boring after a while, and I had much more important things to do tonight.

The sound of steady footsteps echoed behind me. I didn’t turn around. I simply watched the tall, commanding figure draw closer through the reflection on the glass door.

It was Louis.

“Miss Hill, it’s quite windy out here,” said a deep, cold voice behind me.

I looked away and leaned against the car seat.Louis brushed his fingertips lightly against the back of my hand before locking our fingers together.“What did he say?” he asked. His tone was casual, but his grip tightened slightly.I turned my head to look at him.“It’s not important.”He smiled and didn’t let go of my hand until we arrived at the Italian restaurant.Meanwhile, Ruby broke down because she had finally realized a harsh truth—Jacob had never loved her.She was merely a substitute Jacob used to fill the sudden void left by someone else. Whenever he called her “Ruby,” he would look right through her, staring at someone who wasn’t actually there. When he took her out to eat, he would habitually blurt out, “Pancakes with bacon and eggs.”That was my favorite food. For the first time, Ruby slammed a plate down in front of Jacob.“Jacob, what on earth is on your mind?”Jacob glanced at her before turning away.“Ruby,” he said, “let’s break up.”That was it. My father’s secretary sent another update. Jacob had gone to my father, demanding to see the original copy of the employment contract. My father had refused to hand it over, but Jacob managed to get his hands on a backup copy from my father’s personal attorney. The terms of the contract were spelled out in hard print. “During the term of this agreement, the Contractor shall, through emotional manipulation, instil in the Client’s daughter a profound distaste for romantic relationships, so that she will willingly accept a marriage arranged by the family. Under no circumstances shall the Contractor develop genuine feelings for the subject of the contract.“Any breach of this clause shall require the Contractor to refund the entire eight-figure retainer and compensate the Client for all associated damages.”Word had it that the day Jacob read that contract, he smashed a glass right in my father’s office. He had demanded, “A subject? Is that all she is to you? Just a subject?”My f

The next morning, I woke up to find seventeen friend requests from Jacob. Every single one of them had been sent over the course of the night.I ignored them all.His messages had evolved drastically over the hours. [We need to talk.][I can explain what happened that night.][Natalie, you can’t do this to me.]I couldn’t do what, exactly? I couldn’t let a professional actor, who had already cashed a multi-million-dollar check, wrap up his production on schedule?Honestly, I felt I had been incredibly merciful.By the fifth day, Louis’s assistant forwarded an email to me. It was a message Jacob had written directly to the public relations department of Lanes Group. It was a sprawling, two-thousand-word essay. The gist of it was to tell them that I was mentally unstable and to urge Louis to reconsider the engagement.I read the entire thing at my desk and then slowly leaned back against my chair, laughing. He was still desperately trying to play the “I know Natalie best” car

That evening, Louis took me back to his penthouse in the city center.Right after we stepped through the door, he pulled a brand-new pair of women’s house slippers from the shoe cabinet. He even bent down to place them right by my feet. The size was perfect.I looked around the place. On the coffee table in the living room, there was a glass of water and a charcuterie board. Up on the bathroom shelf sat a complete, unopened set of top-tier luxury skincare products. Even the accent pillows on the couch were in my favorite Morandi color palette.“Do you keep these things ready in every property under your name, Mr. Lane?” I asked as I slid my feet into the slippers and looked at him with a half-smile.Louis was just pulling off his tie, but he froze at my words.“Only this place has them,” he said, casually draping his tie over the couch while avoiding my gaze. “And they were only ever prepared for you.”I walked up to him and looked at him. “You’ve known me for a long time, haven’

“Don’t you understand?” I looked at him coldly and continued, “You did a great job meeting your KPIs as a professional boyfriend.“The eight-figure sum Mr. Hill promised you, combined with this final payment from me, should be more than enough for you and your darling Ruby to buy a decent house to start your lives together.”A collective gasp echoed through the room.Ruby’s face drained of color as she turned to look at Jacob.“Jacob, what is she talking about?”Jacob panicked. He instinctively looked up at my father on the second-floor balcony, his face pale.“Nat, let me explain. I–”“Shh.” I cut him off, stuffing the check directly into his suit pocket. Then, I casually patted his chest and added, “The show is over, so stop trying to ad-lib your lines.”Right at that moment, the doors to the ballroom swung open once more. Louis walked in, carrying the cold chill of the night air with him. His assistant behind him didn’t even dare to follow too closely. The moment he appear

Jacob’s mind games were becoming increasingly blatant. To speed up the process of breaking my heart, he began stepping on my boundaries at every single turn.I was running a fever of 102 degrees Fahrenheit, shivering all by myself in my rented apartment. I called him, and the call rang six times before he finally picked up.“Jacob, I have a high fever. Can you please take me to the hospital?”My voice sounded incredibly weak. Half of it was from being genuinely sick, and the other half was just me playing along with the script. The background on his end was loud, and Ruby’s laughter came through the speaker as clear as day.“Just take some painkillers. You’re a grown-up. How are you still so needy?” Jacob said impatiently. “Ruby is moving into her new place today, and I can’t leave. Figure it out yourself.”With a click, he hung up on me.I tossed the phone aside and poured myself a glass of water, my face expressionless.Ten minutes later, the doorbell rang. Thinking it was th
