Elena's POV

My mother opened the door on the third knock.

She took one look at me, then at Jace and Aiden standing behind me, and her expression changed.

“Elena?” “Mom, we need to talk." Her eyes moved to Jace. "What happened?” “I found something,” I said. The words came out quieter than I intended.

She stepped aside.

“Come in.”

We entered the house, and she closed the door behind us. The familiar warmth of the living room suddenly felt uncomfortable. Now I wasn't sure I knew anything.

  • Fake Fiancée To My Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 58 – The price of being a Calloway

Elena's POVThe first message arrived at 8:17 on Monday morning.I was sitting at my desk, trying to finish the literary showcase schedule, when my phone vibrated. It was from someone I hadn't spoken to since secondary school.Elena, is this true? There was a screenshot attached.I opened it, expecting another question about my mother's marriage or the engagement. Instead, I found a photograph of Margot standing beside Richard at what appeared to be their wedding reception. The caption beneath it read:Some women don't marry for love. They marry for access. My stomach tightened.I scrolled down. There were more photographs. Margot at a charity dinner, Richard holding her hand, and one of me standing beside Jace outside the Calloway mansion. The photographs were real. The captions were not.One claimed Margot had pursued Richard for months before their marriage. Another suggested I had deliberately encouraged Jace's attention because I knew his family's wealth would give me the life I

  • Fake Fiancée To My Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 57 – The Boy who broke Me

Elena's POV By Saturday morning, I had started looking at apartments. Not seriously at first. I told myself I was only checking prices, comparing locations and trying to understand what it would take to move out after the basketball season. But the more listings I opened, the more real the possibility became.A small apartment near campus. One bedroom. A kitchen barely large enough for two people. Nothing luxurious, but it would be mine.I had spent so much time trying to make life in the Calloway mansion bearable that I had forgotten I could choose to leave.Tessa sat beside me on the bed, scrolling through one of the listings."This one looks decent.""It's expensive.""They all are."I sighed and took the phone from her. "I don't even know if I can afford it.""Then we'll figure out the money part when you have the full picture. But at least you're thinking about what you want instead of what everyone else expects."I looked at the apartment again."I don't want to leave my mother

  • Fake Fiancée To My Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 56 – The Distance Between Us

Elena's POVI didn't wear the ring on Friday. For the first time since Jace had slipped it onto my finger, I left it on my bedside table and walked downstairs without it.I expected someone to notice.I just hadn't expected Jace to be the first. He was standing near the kitchen island, scrolling through his phone when I entered. His eyes moved to my bare hand, and whatever he had been reading suddenly became unimportant."You're not wearing it." I reached for a glass of water."Good morning to you too." "Elena." "It's a ring, Jace. Not a permanent part of my body."His jaw tightened, but he didn't push the conversation.Richard was already dressed for work, while Margot sat quietly at the breakfast counter. The atmosphere had been uncomfortable since my confrontation with her, and nobody seemed particularly interested in fixing it."Are you attending the reception tonight?" Richard asked."No." Jace looked at me. Richard frowned. "Your absence will raise questions.""Then perhaps you

  • Fake Fiancée To My Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 55 – The Story They Built

Elena's POVBy Thursday afternoon, I'd received three messages from people I hadn't spoken to in years. One asked whether my mother had married Richard Calloway because we were struggling financially. Another wanted to know if Jace had paid my university fees. The third simply said, Girl, have you seen what they're saying about you?I hadn't, until Tessa appeared at my study table in the library, looking furious."Please tell me you've checked your phone." "Considering your expression, I'm guessing I shouldn't."She sat opposite me and showed me Lila Rowan's latest article.FROM STRUGGLING STUDENT TO CALLOWAY BRIDE: ELENA HART'S FAIRY-TALE TRANSFORMATION.Beneath the headline was a photograph of Jace and me at our first charity dinner. His hand rested on my waist while I smiled up at him.I remembered that evening. We'd argued in the car because he'd insisted I wear the ring where everyone could see it.Now the photograph looked like proof of a beautiful love story. The article descri

  • Fake Fiancée To My Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 54 – After

Elena's POVThe first thing I noticed when I woke up was the ring on my finger.Sunlight caught the diamond, making it sparkle as though nothing had changed.Yesterday, it had been a prop. Today, I wasn't sure what it was anymore.I rolled onto my back, wishing I could erase the memories rushing through my head.Jace kissing me. His hands around my waist. The way he'd looked at me afterward, as though something between us had changed permanently. And the worst part? I had wanted every second of it.I was supposed to survive this engagement, finish the semester, and eventually walk away from the Calloway family with my dignity intact.Instead, I had kissed the boy who used to make my childhood miserable. The same boy who had somehow become the person I looked forward to seeing every morning. My phone vibrated.Tessa: Are you alive?Me: Unfortunately.Tessa: What happened?I hesitated before typing.Me: I think I made a mistake. She called immediately."What kind of mistake?" she demand

  • Fake Fiancée To My Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 53 – Too Close

Elena’s POVBy the time we got home, I had decided I was done thinking about Jace Calloway. That lasted approximately three minutes. The house was unusually quiet. Margot and Richard were still out, which meant there was no dinner conversation waiting for us, no forced smiles across the table, no reason to pretend we were the perfect family everyone seemed determined to believe we were.I should have been relieved.Instead, I could still hear Jace’s voice from the car. What do you want me to do?Nothing. That was what I had told him.Because I didn't know what I wanted him to do. I didn't know what I wanted from him anymore. The problem was that every time Jace looked at me lately, the arrangement felt less like an arrangement.I dropped my bag onto the chair in my room and changed out of my clothes. I had barely finished pulling on an oversized shirt when I heard a knock.I opened the door.Jace stood in the hallway. His hair was still damp from the shower, and he had changed into gra

  • Fake Fiancée To My Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 5 – The Proposal

POV: ElenaAlmost instantly, the heavy, dark atmosphere Jace radiated began driving his guests toward the exits. • Fake Fiancée To My Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 4 – The Storm Before the Break

POV: ElenaThe suffocating weight of Jace’s gaze followed me all the way across the crowded floor. I kept my chin down, pushing past sweaty bodies and ignoring the stray glances from people who were too drunk to care but sober enough to whisper. My heart was a frantic drumbeat against my ribs as I

  • Fake Fiancée To My Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 3 – The Uninvited Guest

POV: ElenaBy eleven o'clock the next night, my bedroom felt less like a sanctuary and more like a vibrating cage.Thud. Thud. Thud. The heavy, aggressive bass from the sound system downstairs rattled the vintage glass panes of my private balcony. It had been going on for hours. What had started as

  • Fake Fiancée To My Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 1 – The Shadow In the Kitchen

POV: ElenaThe blast of thick, humid air hit me the second I stepped off the jet bridge, but it wasn't nearly as suffocating as the voice vibrating against my eardrum."Elena? Are you off yet? Tell me you’re off the plane," my mother’s voice rushed through the line, accompanied by the distinct, cli
