Chapter 4

Author: The Awakened
They talked tough, but the second they saw blood, they backed off.

I wiped my mouth and looked around.

Same faces.

Some grinned, full of it.

Others stared at the floor, too scared to meet my eyes.

Today's quarterly meeting pulled in Lombardo Corp's top players—most of them I'd handpicked over the last two years.

Before me, Montavia's Lombardo Corp was barely mid-tier.

I took over and flipped everything. Cut the dead weight riding seniority. Gave the overlooked ones a real shot.

Promotions. Raises. I broke rules to make it happen.

Two years later, the company's value tripled. Industry leader.

And yesterday? These same people were lined up outside my office, sucking up.

Now?

Not a single one spoke.

Seeing them hesitate, he shoved Clara aside. "What are you scared of? I'm Lombardo Corp's CEO now—the real Lombardo heir," Philip said.

He jabbed a finger at me. "And him? A fake. Exposing him's doing everyone a favor. Got a problem with that?"

He lifted the signing board again. "Sign it and get a raise."

That was all it took.

A department manager I'd personally promoted stepped up, signed, then spat in my face. "Trash like you belongs in the dump. Why show up and get in Philip's way?"

Philip cracked up and tossed him a bonus on the spot. "Who's next? Make me happy, you get paid."

Their eyes lit up. One by one, they signed, branding me a "fake heir."

"Luca, you trash who stole someone else's life. Your real parents are probably rotting in some dump!"

"A fake's always a fake. That poverty stink on you? Disgusting."

"If you hadn't hit Philip, we might've said a word for you. For old times' sake, maybe we'd let you stay—clean toilets. Hahaha!"

They took turns ripping me apart, grinding me down to nothing.

It hit me—this was almost funny.

I was born rich. People smiled at me my whole life.

After I took over the family business, the respect only got louder.

When I first showed up at Lombardo Corp Montavia, they treated me like royalty.

I thought I'd earned that with my skills.

Guess not. To them, status was everything.

You don't see people clearly until you're down—who's real, who's just a shadow.

Lombardo Corp Montavia? It'd probably been rotten to the core for a long time.

After they had their fun, Philip gave a signal. A few bulky bodyguards stepped in.

They slammed me down and ripped my clothes off.

A neon vest—"FAKE"—went on. A placard hung from my neck. The camera zoomed in for the livestream.

[Hell yeah! You're the king! This is peak content. Every expose hits hard!]

[Thought rich dudes act untouchable why you crawling now.]

[Philip, don't stop. Keep it coming. Need the next part.]

Philip looked down at me. "My fans want it? I deliver."

He had them pin me down, then drove his foot into my chest. Pain blew through me. Blood came up.

"Exposing fakes means a beating. Hit him. Hard."

These guys knew what they were doing—every strike landed where it hurt most.

Cold shot through me. I forced it out, "They're trying to kill me. Call the chairman. If he finds out I got hurt, you all are done."

"Still dreaming?" Philip sneered.

He pressed his foot into the wound. I sucked in air. "Why would my dad help a fake? He wishes you'd disappear. Stop embarrassing the family."

He glanced at the bodyguards. "Keep going. If he dies, it's on me."

So he wasn't stopping.

I shut my eyes, ready to play my last card.

Then the conference room doors slammed open.

Nicolo and Martina stood there, out of breath.

Nicolo took one look at the mess and snapped—

"What the hell is going on?!"

I opened my eyes. A dull throb pulsed in the back of my head.My vision swam, then slowly snapped into focus. Then it hit me.I was in the basement of Nicolo's estate.I tried to sit up—nope. Tied down.Voices cut through the air nearby, sharp and heated."You idiot! Why'd you attack him?" Nicolo snapped. "We could've fixed this. Now it's done. You just dragged the whole family down with you!""Dad! You're still hesitating?" Philip's voice stayed calm—too calm, almost unhinged. "If he walks out alive, we're done. Dead men don't talk. You get that, right?""No!" Martina fired back, her voice shaking. "He's the heir to the entire Lombardo empire! If this gets out, we're finished.""Gets out?" Philip scoffed. "If we let him go, we're finished anyway. Might as well bet no one traces the real cause. We stage it—an accident. No one finds out. I've got people who handle this stuff..."Nicolo hesitated.Philip didn't let up. "Dad, you built all this. You really gonna let some spoile

Everyone froze. They stared at me, horrified."You were pretty good just now," I said. "All that flattery. I enjoyed it."I looked up, eyes cold. "So... everyone here is fired. No exceptions."The room blew up."Boss, we were wrong. Give us one more chance.""I'll take a pay cut. Any punishment—just don't fire me.""My family depends on me. If I lose this job, we're done..."They cried and begged. When I didn't budge, they turned to Nicolo like he could save them."Please, say something for us. We're the backbone of this company.""Yeah. We're not perfect, but we've put in years here."Nicolo clearly didn't want to lose them. He hesitated. "Sir... maybe we dock their bonuses? Make an example out of them. Or demote them, cut their pay?"I shot him a cold look. "People like that rot a company from the inside. Or have you been letting this slide the whole time?"Nicolo's face went pale. He clenched his jaw, then nodded. "Fine... we'll do it your way."Security rushed in and d

Everyone let out a breath. They'd thought I'd make an example out of them. No one expected this.A second ago, they were shaking. Now? Relief—and I could practically hear it. 'So what if he's the richest man? He's that easy?'The next second, they rushed me, crowding in.They talked over each other, tripping over their own flattery, scared to fall behind."Boss, I knew you were generous. No way you'd hold this against us.""Boss, the company's been killing it under you these past two years. We knew you weren't ordinary.""Right? You looked untouchable back there. And that idiot Philip still ran his mouth? He had it coming.""We were forced, okay? We've always been on your side."I smiled and nodded at them, one by one.Clara forced out tears and edged closer, voice soft. "Luca, I've always loved you..."Her voice shook, like she was the victim. "Philip forced me. He threatened me. I had to pretend... Can you forgive me?"I looked down at her. "Oh? Really?"She nodded fast,

I watched from a few steps away, a smirk tugging at my lips.Philip, cheek still red, wouldn't back down. "Who could he be? Just some nobody pretending to be me."He pointed at Martina, voice rising. "You're picking some adopted kid over your own son? After everything I went through, you're siding with him?"Martina clutched her chest, furious. "Who told you we adopted him?"She looked at Philip—still stubborn—and shook her head. "How did we end up with a son this stupid..."Clara swallowed and stepped forward. "Mrs. Lombardo, you and Mr. Lombardo don't know the full story. Luca insulted Philip first. That's why he fought back. Luca's manipulative. Don't let him fool you."Martina slapped her so hard she stumbled back."You're still stirring things up? You think I can't see through you, you shameless woman?" Martina shot her a glare. "If you hadn't gone after my son, none of this would've happened. You think you're marrying into this family? Keep dreaming."Clara covered her fa

The room went dead quiet.Nicolo and Martina showing up shut everyone up.Philip thought they were here for him. He rushed over. "Dad, Mom—perfect timing."He pointed at me on the floor, smug. "You've gotta back me up. This fake won't give up the CEO seat. He won't even recognize the inheritance papers you signed. I just taught him a small lesson. You're not mad, right?"Nicolo looked at me—beaten, covered in blood—and almost dropped. The second Philip mentioned those papers, his face drained.Philip kept going, hyped, clueless about how bad they looked."Oh, right. This is Clara, my girlfriend." He pulled her over.Clara gave a polite greeting.Nicolo didn't even look at her. His face went dark. "Who told you to touch him?!"He caught the livestream still running on Philip's phone and looked ready to snap. "Shut this trash stream down. Didn't I tell you?
