Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
The security guard nodded and left.

Dad turned back to the guests with an apologetic smile. "I'm so sorry, everyone. My daughter isn't feeling well today, so she won't be able to greet you all. Hopefully, we can introduce you properly another time."

He stepped off the stage. Camila hurried after him.

Below the stage, Noel turned to Dad. "Bethany has no manners! She doesn't know how to behave in public!"

Mom looked equally displeased. "How unreliable. How can we trust her to help manage the company in the future?"

Camila's voice dripped with false sympathy. "Beth must be nervous, but disappearing like that really was too much."

Dad nodded, his disappointment clear. "We'll need to give her some proper guidance. Freezing up at such an important event!"

Just then, the security guard approached. "Mr. Clark, we found Ms. Bethany."

"Where is she?" Dad's tone was stern.

"In the bathroom."

"What?" Dad looked confused. "What's she doing there? Take us to her."

The bathroom door had been locked from the outside. They opened it easily.

When Mom saw me in the janitor's uniform, she didn't ask if I was okay. Instead, she launched right into accusations. "Bethany, do you have any idea how much damage you've done to our company's reputation by disappearing like that?"

Noel chimed in. "You're an adult and you still cause problems! You're nothing like Camila!"

Even Dad frowned. "Beth, what's going on?"

I looked at them innocently. "The door was locked from the outside. Obviously someone did this on purpose. Why are you blaming me for something so obvious? Are you deliberately trying to make things difficult for me?"

Everyone looked embarrassed. Dad tried to smooth things over. "We were just worried about you. Don't overthink it. Do you know who locked you in?"

I looked at Camila.

"Camy spilled her drink on me and told me to come change. But after that, she disappeared. My clothes and phone were gone, and the door was locked. I couldn't get it open no matter what I tried.

"I thought maybe everyone found me embarrassing and had Camy lock me in here. If I'd known I was causing so much trouble, I would've climbed out the window."

Everyone turned to stare at Camila.

"What's this about?" Dad looked at her sternly. "And I remember you saying you hadn't seen Beth at all?"

Camila's eyes widened in panic, then filled with tears. "Beth, I know you can't stand me, but you can't frame me like this! This has nothing to do with me!"

As soon as Camila started crying, they all took her side again.

Mom immediately defended her. "Camila never lies. How could she do something like this?"

Noel chimed in with a rebuke. "Bethany, you can't just accuse Camila to avoid responsibility. You have no manners!"

I frowned, about to speak, but Camila cut me off with more theatrics. "Beth, I know you resent me for taking your place and everyone's affection, but you can't falsely accuse me and hurt everyone like this!"

Dad's expression grew serious. "Beth, you can't say things that cause trouble in this family."

I didn't answer directly. In my past life, I'd had no evidence. Faced with everyone's bias toward Camila, I couldn't defend myself.

This time was different. Instead, I raised my hand and pointed at the wall directly across from the bathroom entrance. "If you don't believe me, check the security cameras!"

Everyone gasped and shouted warnings."Beth! Move!"But I was still lost in the trauma of my past, unable to snap out of it. Then Adrian shoved me aside, and the knife plunged into his abdomen instead. When Camila realized she'd stabbed the wrong person, she froze in shock. "Adrian! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to!"Then her eyes turned vicious again. "It's all that bitch's fault! If it weren't for her, you wouldn't be hurt and Mom and Dad wouldn't have abandoned me! I would be the one marrying you!"Even as she spoke, her hand kept moving. She stabbed him seven or eight more times.Adrian's face went deathly pale. "Camila, even without Beth, I would never marry you!""That's not true!" She ignored him and came at me again with the knife."Beth, snap out of it!"After Adrian pushed me, I snapped back to reality. Looking at this woman who'd exposed my deepest wounds and carved new ones, I felt nothing but rage. When she thrust the knife at me, I dodged easily. I grabbed her wrist

Dad's face flashed with shock before hardening. He slapped Camila hard across the face.Camila's eyes went wide with disbelief. "Dad, did you just hit me? You've never hit me before!"Dad looked at her with pure disappointment. "Someone take her to her room. She's not to leave without my permission!""No, you can't do this! Dad, I'm sorry! Please don't do this to me!"When Dad didn't respond, she turned to Mom for help. But Mom looked away, equally disappointed. "Camila, you need to calm down and think about what you've done."With that, Camila stopped struggling and let the security guards escort her away. I glanced back. Sure enough, she was staring at me with resentful eyes.Everyone gradually recovered from the shock.Richard spoke first. "Let's set a date for the wedding. Adrian, why don't you take Beth out for some air?"Adrian nodded and took my hand. "Are you okay?"His voice was soft with concern.I nodded. I had been frightened in the moment, but she hadn't actuall

A few days later, the Whitmore family came to visit after hearing the Clark family's real daughter had been found. The Whitmores had an old marriage arrangement with the Clarks. As soon as Adrian Whitmore walked through the door, Camila rushed to greet him."Adrian!" Then she noticed his parents, and her expression turned syrupy sweet."Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore, what brings you here?"Richard Whitmore looked uncomfortable. "Camila, where are your parents?""Dad's reading the paper in the living room," Camila replied."Good. We need to speak with your father. Camila, could you let him know we're here?" Richard smiled politely."Okay..." Camila looked puzzled. The families visited each other all the time, but never this formally. She led them to the living room. When Dad saw the Whitmores, he set down his newspaper. "Richard, this is quite the occasion. What's going on?"Richard got straight to the point. "Maverick, I'll be direct. When our families arranged the engagement years a

When I mentioned checking the cameras, Camila felt a secret surge of relief, though she hid it well. "Beth, I heard that camera's been broken for ages. You wouldn't be accusing me because you knew that, would you?"But the venue manager spoke up just then. "The camera was fixed right before the party started."Dad nodded. "Then let's see the footage."Camila panicked when she heard the camera was working. "Dad, maybe we should just drop it. I don't want this to cause bad blood between Beth and the family."Dad refused firmly. "That won't do. When family members have problems, we solve them right away. Whoever did wrong needs to face consequences."I agreed. "Dad's right. If I'm the one who lied, I'll get on my knees and apologize if that's what it takes."Remembering how I'd practically groveled when I first came home, Dad frowned. "No need for that. Just pull up the footage."The manager brought up the security feed. The video showed Camila leading me into the bathroom. It was
