“Why the h*ll did you shove her? Are you out of your fucking mind?” Jessa yelled the moment Blaine stepped back into the van. Her face was red with rage, her hands clenched tightly at her sides. What annoyed her the most wasn’t even what he’d done, it was the smug smile plastered across his face, like he was proud of himself. He knew that such action could have ruined everything they had carefully planned out and he still went on to do something crazy.

Blaine shut the van door behind him and shrugged casually.

“She didn’t get run over. That’s what matters,” he said calmly. “All I did was give her a little shove. She froze up. She wasn’t ready to stop the car. If I hadn’t done something, she would’ve let him drive off and you wouldn't have liked that. Isn’t that what you wanted?"

Jessa groaned loudly and dragged a hand through her hair. “You could have gotten her killed,” she snapped. “Do you even understand what would have happened if that car hadn’t stopped in time? all of this would have been all for nothing, we would be done for"

Blaine rolled his eyes and leaned back against the side of the van.

“But it did stop,” he replied. “And didn’t things work out in the end? She finally got Max Hult’s attention. Isn’t that the whole point of this? Or did you forget why we’re doing all of this in the first place?”

Jessa turned away from him, pacing the length of the van.

“We would have been in a hot mess with the boss if things had gone wrong,” she said tightly. “Next time, don’t do anything without giving me a heads-up. I don’t care how confident you feel. don't ever do something crazy like this like this again. I've had enough of your crazy stunts."

“Loosen up, Jessa,” Blaine said with a lazy smirk. “You should be worried about more important things.”

Jessa stopped abruptly and glared at him, her mouth opening to fire back, but she stopped herself. Instead, she turned to Rico, who hadn’t said a word since they left the scene. He was seated in the front, focused on a small screen in his hands, his fingers moving quickly.

“Do you know where they’re taking her?” Jessa asked, her voice calmer but still tense.

Rico didn’t look up immediately, his eyes still glued to his screen like he didn't want to lose concentration.

“Not yet,” he replied. “But let’s see.”

He tapped a few buttons, then turned the screen so they could see it.

“I slipped a tracker into her purse before she got out of the van,” he added. “As long as she still has it, we’ll know exactly where she is.”

Jessa nodded, letting out a slow breath. At least one thing had gone according to plan and Rico wasn't acting up like the fool beside her. that would have been too much for her to handle.

"Alright let's go" Blaine said and started the car.

__________

They parked across the street from the hospital and waited.

And waited.

Time dragged on painfully slow. The rain had stopped, but the night air was cold and heavy. Hours passed with no sign of Max Hult’s car leaving the hospital parking lot.

Blaine shifted impatiently in his seat.

“What do you think is going on in there? are you sure she was brought here" he asked.

"Yes blaine. this signals stopped right here" Rico answered and almost rolled his eyes.

“Do you think he’s suspicious?” Blaine continued with his questions. and Jessa let out a deep sigh.

“What do you think?” she shot back. “He wouldn’t have a reason to be if you hadn’t shoved her like that. You almost ruined everything.”

Blaine scoffed.

“No one noticed the push,” he said. “And be honest, do you really think she would’ve gotten his attention if I hadn’t done that? She stood there like a log of wood, ready to let him drive off. I did us a favor.”

Jessa clenched her jaw. Part of her hated to admit it, but he wasn’t entirely wrong. Still, the risk he’d taken made her stomach twist.

Before she could respond, Rico finally spoke up.

“Enough,” he said firmly. “What matters is that today was a success. She’s in Max Hult’s head now. That’s all that counts. We wait and watch. Let’s see what he does next.”

Blaine sighed loudly.

“And how long do we have to wait? It’s been over three hours already.”

Jessa shot him a sharp glare.

“As long as it takes.”

He raised his hands in mock surrender.

“We could just call her,” he suggested. “Ask how things are going in there.”

He reached for the burner phone, already dialing, but Rico snatched it out of his hand before he could press call.

“No,” Rico said sharply. “Max could be close to her. We can’t take any chances.”

Blaine groaned and leaned his head back against the seat.

“This is ridiculous,” he muttered. “I’m starving. It’s late, and all we’ve had today is breakfast.”

“Stop complaining,” Jessa snapped. “Food should be the least of your worries right now. I’m sure you know how the boss would react if I told him how you almost messed things up today.”

She was about to say more when Blaine suddenly leaned forward, pointing out the window.

“Isn’t that his car?” he asked.

All three of them turned to look.

A sleek black car slowly pulled out of the hospital parking lot and Jessa narrowed her eyes.

“That’s him,” she said quietly.

“Is she in there with him?” Blaine asked.

No one answered.

The windows were tinted too dark to see inside.

“It doesn’t matter,” Jessa said after a moment. “Either she’s with him, or she’s still inside. What matters is that she finally got his attention.”

Rico nodded.

“And now,” he added, “we can finally get to work.”

Max was already on his way back to the estate when his phone rang. He glanced at the screen briefly before answering. “Melissa.” “Sir,” her voice came through, calm but with an underlying urgency. “She asked to go for a walk alone.” Max’s eyes narrowed slightly as he leaned back into the seat. Scott, who was driving, glanced at him through the rearview mirror but said nothing. “And?” Max asked. “She noticed,” Melissa added. “Or at least… she suspects. She insisted on being alone and walked out to the garden. I didn’t follow.” A brief silence followed her words. Max let out a quiet breath, his gaze drifting to the window as the estate gates came into view ahead. “I see,” he said simply. “She seemed… uneasy,” Melissa continued after a pause. “More than usual.” Max didn’t respond immediately. He didn’t need to. He had already come to the same conclusion the moment Melissa mentioned Mia wanting to be alone. She had figured it out. Or at least, enough of it. “Thank you, Melis

When everything was finally done, Mia felt like she could barely breathe. The dress had been fitted, adjusted and admired by everyone in the room... Elian had circled her like a man possessed, muttering under his breath about perfection, symmetry, and how the final stitching had elevated everything beyond his expectations. Melissa had stood close by the entire time, watching, occasionally nodding, occasionally correcting the maids when needed. Mia had stood there through it all still and silent, smiling when she had to. Answering when spoken to. But inside, her chest had felt tighter with every passing second. By the time Elian finally declared himself satisfied and the dress was carefully packed away again, Mia felt like she had been holding her breath for hours. “Perfect,” Elian had said, his eyes gleaming with pride. “Absolutely perfect.” Mia had nodded. But the word echoed differently in her mind. Perfect. That was what Max wanted too, wasn’t it? A perfec

Max’s office was silent except for the soft ticking of the clock mounted on the far wall. Morning light filtered through the tall windows behind his desk, casting long streaks of pale gold across the polished floor. The room carried the same atmosphere it always did, everything perfectly arranged, nothing out of place. Max sat behind his desk, flipping through a stack of documents. To anyone walking in, he looked completely normal. Focused, calm and working. But Scott knew better. Scott had been working with Max for years, long enough to recognize when something was different. And this morning something definitely was. Scott stood near the side table, a tablet in his hand as he reviewed the morning schedule. He had already updated Max about several meetings and handled three phone calls on his behalf, but his attention kept drifting back to the man behind the desk. Max hadn’t spoken much since arriving. Which wasn’t unusual. But there was a quiet tension in the room that h

Mia didn’t remember when the sky outside her window began to lighten. At some point during the endless hours of staring at the ceiling, the deep darkness had softened into the pale grey of early morning. The house slowly began to wake, she could hear sound of movement coming from downstairs. But Mia had not slept. Not even for a minute. Her eyes burned from exhaustion, yet her mind remained restless, replaying the events of the night over and over again. Max’s voice in the darkness. The way he had already been there. Waiting. The warning in his words. A soft knock suddenly broke the silence. Mia sat up instantly. Her heart jumped. For a moment, she simply stared at the door. Another knock followed, it was gentle but firm. It had to be Melissa. Or one of the maids calling her down for breakfast. Still, the suddenness of it made her stomach twist nervously. Had Max said something? Did Melissa already know about last night? Mia quickly stood and smoothed down the wrin

The walk back upstairs felt longer than it ever had before. Mia stepped out of the dark room first, the dim hallway lights suddenly feeling far too bright after the suffocating darkness inside. Her eyes adjusted slowly as her mind raced, her pulse still pounding loudly in her ears. Max’s words echoed relentlessly. You might discover things you won’t survive knowing. She swallowed hard. Well that was why she was here in the first place, but she had to survive one way or another. Without another word, she started walking. The hallway stretched ahead of her, but she could feel it the unmistakable presence behind her. Heavy, controlled footsteps followed at a steady distance. Max. He wasn’t rushing or speaking. But he was there and Mia could feel it with every step she took. Her stomach twisted. Was he escorting her back… or watching her? She kept her gaze forward, refusing to look back even though every nerve in her body screamed to check. Her bare feet moved a

Mia waited and waited and waited. The house had long since gone quiet. By the time the clock on her bedside table crept past midnight, the entire estate felt like it had fallen asleep. Still, Mia didn’t move. She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the dark window across from her, listening. Her heart beating steadily in her chest. Because the truth was… she had already decided hours ago that she was going to do this. The hallway had been haunting her all day. Every conversation with Clara, every careful smile she gave Melissa, every polite nod during the wedding planning, it had all been a performance to cover the one thought she couldn’t shake. What was behind that door? And why had Max walked in there like he was stepping into something painful? Mia checked the clock again. 12:17 a.m. If Melissa had any habit of late-night patrols, Mia hadn’t seen evidence of it yet. The housekeeper usually disappeared shortly after dinner, and the rest of the staff stayed confined

His jaw clenched hard enough to ache, his shoulders stiffening as if the walls themselves had suddenly grown heavier. The corridor stretched before him, long and dimly lit, the

Max stood on the balcony of his room, one hand resting on the cold railing as the night air brushed against his skin. The estate was quiet, almost eerily so, but that was how he liked it. Silence had always been his comfort. Noise, crowds, forced conversations, they drained him in ways nothing els
