~Liv~

I didn’t feel the phone leave my hand.

I just heard the splash, far below the railing, like a coin dropped in a wishing well that never granted anything.

Ava’s ultrasound picture disappeared into black water.

Weeks gone . Grainy little bean. Caleb tagged in the comments with a string of heart emojis and “Can’t wait to marry my girls.”

The wedding was moved up. Of course it was. Because everything in Ava’s life accelerates while mine stalls out in the breakdown lane.

I laughed so hard my ribs hurt. Then I threw up over the side of the pier, mostly alcohol and self-loathing.

After that it was just legs carrying me from bar to bar, shots sliding down like punishment, music too loud to think. Someone kept buying me drinks because I was the sad girl crying. I let them. I let everyone. I wanted to disappear inside the noise.

At some point the world tilted sideways and I was back on the pier, shoes gone, dress soaked from falling in the shallows. The tide was out, exposing all

~Liv~My words still hung in the air and I honestly didn't know what to say, my heart was beating so fast I could feel it wanting to fall out. Uh, yeah, sure. We can do that.” Rowan said.“Perfect! Six o’clock. Bring Rowan, obviously. Can’t wait to see my almost-son-in-law.”Rowan’s eyebrows shot up. I wanted to die.“See you then, mum,” he said, way too smug.I hung up fast and threw the phone across the bed.“You’re dead,” I said, lunging at him.He caught me, laughing as I tried to strangle him with a pillow. “Come on, it’ll be fun!”“Fun? My mom just called you her almost-son-in-law!”“Yeah, I heard.” He wrestled the pillow away, pinned my hands above my head. “Kinda hot.”“You’re deranged.”He grinned down at me, hair falling in his face. “So. Fake with benefits, dinner with the parents. We’re really selling this couple thing now.”I groaned, dropping my head back onto the mattress. “We’re so screwed.”“Yeah,” he said, leaning down to kiss my neck again. “But later. Right now,

~Liv~His mouth was on mine again and this time it wasn’t angry, it was just hungry, like he’d been starving for months and finally decided to stop pretending he wasn’t. My back hit the counter hard enough that I grunted into the kiss, but I didn’t care, I just grabbed fistfuls of his shirt and yanked him closer, legs parting so he could slot right between them like he belonged there.Which, fine, maybe he did.Rowan groaned low in his throat, hands sliding up under my hoodie…his hoodie, whatever…and his palms were hot against my skin, thumbs brushing the underside of my bra like he was testing if I’d stop him. I didn’t. I arched into it instead, biting his bottom lip just to hear that pissed-off noise he made when I pushed his buttons.“Fuck, Liv,” he muttered, pulling back just enough to yank the hoodie over my head and toss it somewhere behind him. Didn’t even look where it landed. His eyes dropped to my chest and he smirked. “Been thinking about this way too much.”“Yeah?” I grabb

~Rowan~I couldn’t fucking sleep. The one night I actually needed my brain to shut up, it decided to throw a goddamn party. Every time I closed my eyes I saw her hand coming at my face, heard the slap echo, felt the sting all over again. And yeah, part of me kept thinking I had it coming, but the rest of me was pissed that she’d done it, pissed that I’d pushed her to it, pissed that I cared this much.I rolled over for the hundredth time, punched the pillow, staring at the ceiling. The clock said 3:17 a.m. Awesome.I grabbed my phone off the nightstand. Screen lit up my face like an idiot spotlight. No messages. Of course not. Liv wasn’t the type to text apologies in the middle of the night. She was the type to stew and then explode later.I opened our chat anyway. Thumb hovering over the keyboard.I typed: We need to talk. Can you come over tomorrow?Stared at it.Deleted it.Typed it again.Added: I can’t sleep.Deleted that too. Made me sound weak.Just left the first part.We ne

  • Fake dating the captain    Chapter 13

~Rowan~The apartment went quiet after the door shut.I stayed where I was for a bit, staring at the door. I half expected it to open. Zoe to come back in and say something else sharp. Liv to slip back in because she forgot something stupid like her charger or her lip balm or her pride.None of that happened.I rubbed my face and exhaled. Slowly. Like that actually worked.“Idiot,” I muttered to nobody.I went into the kitchen because I didn’t know what else to do. The glass was still on the table. I picked it up, rinsed it, dried it, set it back down. Then I wiped the counter. Then I wiped it again. There was nothing there.I kept moving anyway. My cheek still burned. I didn’t touch it. I let it sit. I deserved that part. What I didn’t deserve was how close I’d come to losing control of my mouth. That scared me more than the slap ever could.I grabbed my phone off the counter without thinking. My thumb already knew where to go. Her name. Same as every other time tonight.I typed, I’m

  • Fake dating the captain    Chapter 12

~Liv~Rowan stood over me holding the water glass like it was a bomb he didn’t know how to defuse. His knuckles were white. The rest of him looked ready to snap in half.I took the glass just to make him stop staring, gulped half of it, then shoved it back at his chest. Water sloshed over his shirt. He didn’t flinch.“Feel better?” he asked, voice flat.“No.”“Good. Me neither.”He set the glass on the coffee table hard enough that it clinked too loud. Then he just stood there, breathing through his nose, looking at me like I was a puzzle he wanted to smash.I hugged my knees to my chest. “Stop hovering. You’re not my boyfriend, remember? You literally said it.”His jaw flexed. “Yeah, I remember.”“So why are you acting like one?”“Because I’m fucking furious, Liv. That’s why.”I laughed, short and ugly. “At me?”He dragged both hands through his hair hard enough to pull. “No. Yes. I don’t know. Pick one.”“Great. Super clear.”He opened his mouth, closed it, then opened it again. “Yo

  • Fake dating the captain    Chapter 11

~Liv~I was still busy day dreaming about being his real girlfriend when he sneezed like a cow^^. I had one foot tucked under my ass, the sleeve of Rowan’s hoodie pulled all the way over my hand because it smelled like him and I was pathetic enough to keep sniffing it when he wasn’t looking. The movie was some Marvel bullshit neither of us cared about. He kept stealing my crusts, I kept pretending to be annoyed, and everything felt almost normal for like five whole minutes. His phone buzzed on the armrest. He ignored it. Mine buzzed in my lap.I flipped it over without thinking. One new photo. No name saved, just a number I didn't recognize p.Little orange bottle. White cap. My full name on the label in that tiny black font. Sitting on the ugly brown nightstand. The one I stared at while he fucked me from behind and told me I was pretty when I cried.Under the picture: Door’s unlocked if you need.My lungs just quit. The room did that fun little tilt thing it does right before you pu
