Chapter 7

Author: Joyful Chance
Simon stood frozen as Eleanor leaped out of the plane without a moment's hesitation.

His eyes burned, yet not a single tear came.

For all the years they had flown side by side, Eleanor had always pushed him to safety first whenever danger struck.

Now he was the one being left behind.

Simon took a deep breath, tore himself away from the memories, and stumbled toward the storage locker where the parachutes were kept.

Luckily, one last spare parachute pack was tucked in the corner.

Relief washed over him. He quickly strapped on the gear and threw himself out of the burning cabin.

However, when he judged the altitude and pulled the ripcord, it snapped clean off at a small, nearly invisible cut.

Simon's heart plummeted.

Someone had tampered with his parachute.

Images flashed through his mind one after another. He vaguely recalled catching a glimpse of Jeremy lingering by the storage locker out of the corner of his eye while he was at the controls.

Simon closed his eyes as a despair unlike anything he had ever felt before gripped his heart.

How much did Jeremy hate him? Ruining his leg had not been enough. Now, he wanted Simon dead.

There was no time to think. The howling wind swept his thin frame down toward the forest below.

Simon shielded his head with both arms as he crashed through layer after layer of branches, each one snapping and leaving bloody gashes across his body.

He slammed into a pile of fallen leaves, and the world spun before fading to black.

When he came to, Simon was lying in a stark white hospital room.

He instinctively tried to sit up, only to find his wrists and ankles strapped down tight.

Eleanor, Poppy, and Marian stood nearby, all of them looking anxious.

Fear crept into Simon's voice. "What are you doing? Let me go."

Marian frowned and rushed over to pin his hands down. "Jeremy got burned by the sparks from the fire. He doesn't want to die covered in scars, and you're the best match to give him a skin graft."

A dull roar filled Simon's head, and his mind went blank.

Jeremy had nearly killed him, and now they wanted to force him, wounded as he was, to give his skin to the very person responsible?

He thrashed against the restraints like a madman.

Poppy threw her small body over the one leg he had left.

"You can't be a pilot anymore anyway, so what's the big deal about giving Papa some skin?"

Eleanor gave the nurse a cold look.

"There's no time to wait for the anesthesia to kick in. Just start.

"Simon, you'll just have to grit your teeth through it. If you'd stopped Jeremy in time, the fuel tank never would have exploded, and he never would have gotten hurt."

Every word they said tore Simon's heart to pieces.

He cried out in desperation. "Let me go, Eleanor! I did try to stop Jeremy. You're the one who let him do whatever he wanted, and that's why this happened.

"Jeremy sabotaged my parachute. He wanted me dead. Let me go!"

The next second, the cold blade of the dermatome pressed against his inner thigh and sliced away a whole layer of skin.

Simon screamed, his whole body convulsing as his back arched off the bed.

The blade scraped across the most tender parts of his body again and again, leaving raw red strips behind.

Blood soaked the hospital bed. The pain was so intense that Simon began to dry heave, and he could no longer make a sound.

Just then, the door burst open, and a nurse rushed in, looking alarmed.

"We have a problem. Is Jeremy Radcliffe's family here?

"The patient's condition is getting worse. His immune system is failing, and he needs a stem cell transplant. His brother, Simon Radcliffe, is the best match. Right now, Jeremy’s delirious and crying for his family. Even his friend Kevin can't calm him down. You should come see him."

Without a word, Poppy grabbed Marian's hand and ran out of the room.

Eleanor went deathly pale with panic and hurried out after them, leaving only a few words behind. "Wait here for Jeremy's transplant. Hang in there a little longer, Simon. I'll make it up to you later."

All Simon felt was a cold numbness.

Thanks to Jeremy, his body was covered in wounds, and his heart had been ground to dust.

Making it up to him? What could Eleanor possibly give him to make up for a life that had been destroyed?

Simon took a deep breath, fought through the pain to curl his body forward, and used his teeth to undo the strap around his wrist.

He was not going to give Jeremy a transplant, nor would he give any of them the chance to hurt him ever again.

His vision kept going dark, and a piercing ache throbbed deep in his bones as he braced himself against the wall and pushed forward.

When he reached the door, his strength failed him. He staggered into a cabinet and knocked Jeremy's backpack onto the floor.

A pill bottle labeled as targeted therapy for brain tumors rolled out, and the pills scattered everywhere.

Simon went stiff.

Those pale yellow pills looked nothing like any cancer medication. Their size and markings were identical to ordinary vitamins.

Simon suddenly laughed.

There had never been any terminal illness, and Jeremy had never been dying. From start to finish, it had all been a lie Jeremy told so he could take everything from Simon.

This time, however, Simon had no intention of exposing him.

Leaning on his crutches, he walked out of the hospital room one slow, steady step at a time, heading in the opposite direction from the mother, daughter, wife, and best friend he had once called his own.

They could spend the rest of their lives fulfilling Jeremy's fake ‘dying wish’.

As for him, he was leaving them behind, and he would never see any of them again.

Audra's lips curved into a smile."Owl, I can tell you've opened up these past few months and started a new life."I've fallen for you. Will you give me a chance? I'd like to be part of your new life, and I'd like to be the one who helps you heal."Looking into Audra's gentle eyes, Simon felt his heart begin to race.Five years later, the task force's chief researcher got married and made a point of inviting everyone in the unit to the wedding in Brightwater.Setting foot in Brightwater again, Simon found that he saw the city in a completely different light. He walked with his fingers laced through Audra's on one side and his daughter, Sunny Radcliffe, holding his other hand.He felt grounded and content. The three of them laughed and chatted as they came out of the terminal. Sunny ran ahead and bumped into a man, knocking his coffee from his hand."Oh no! I'm so sorry."Simon quickly apologized, but the man only stood frozen, staring at him, his voice trembling."Simon..."

Simon gave a cold laugh."You're right, Poppy. We do have the same blood. Back then, though, when it came down to me or Jeremy, all of you chose to believe him, and he isn't even related to us."If none of you cared about family then, why should I care about it now?"He turned to leave, not wanting to stay a second longer. The moment he turned his back, a dull thud and Poppy's scream rang out at the same time."Grandma! Grandma, what's wrong?"Kevin rushed over to check on Marian. "This is bad. Her breathing and pulse are really weak. She's having a heart attack. We need to get her to a hospital."Simon faltered for a moment, yet he did not stop walking."Daddy!"Poppy's hysterical voice rang out behind him. "Grandma just collapsed. How can you be so heartless and walk away without even looking back?"Eleanor hurried forward and caught Simon by the arm, her voice trembling with desperation."Simon, I'm begging you, okay?"Marian needs you. Poppy needs you too. Even if you d

After Simon returned to the task force, everything seemed to go back to the way it had been.Audra did not ask a single question or pry in any way. It was as if nothing had happened at all.Simon still trained and went on missions alone every day. The difference was that he smiled much more often now. When a teammate struck up a conversation with him, he no longer slipped away without a word. Instead, he could chat easily for a while. When Audra sat across from him at meals, he no longer wolfed down his food and left. Instead, he eagerly told her all about that day's mission. When others in the unit invited him out, he no longer turned them down. Instead, he went along with a smile."Sure. Count me in."Then one day, just after he finished a mission, Audra called him into her office, her expression grave."Owl, someone wants to see you."Simon was in the middle of pulling off his gloves, and his hands froze.Who else could have tracked him down here besides Eleanor and Kevin,

Eleanor flinched at the mockery in Simon’s laugh. She hung her head like a child who had done something wrong."I'm sorry, Simon. I just want you to know that none of us meant to treat you like that."If you'll just come home with me, I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Can't we go back to the way things were?"At that, Simon laughed even louder, the sound harsh and grating, and his eyes reddened despite himself."Sure, you were all lied to. Eleanor, how do you have the nerve to say you didn't mean it, though?"When I got hit by that car, did Jeremy make you ignore me? No. You were so wrapped up in Jeremy that you never even glanced at your own husband."When Jeremy framed me for hurting Poppy, did he make you throw me into that ring? No. You couldn't stand to see Jeremy cry, so you decided to teach me a lesson I'd never forget."Every word Simon said stabbed into Eleanor's heart like a knife. She covered her face as tears slipped through her fingers."Stop. Even though Simon had his back to the door, his heart lurched. He had known that voice for more than twenty years. There was no way he could mistake it.Eleanor had found him after all.Why would she not just let him go?Eleanor rushed forward and threw her arms around Simon like a woman possessed, holding him so tightly it was as if she never meant to let go."Simon, do you have any idea how crazy I've been going since you disappeared? How could you leave Poppy and me behind and run off to some place this remote?"Her scent and her warmth were both achingly familiar, yet Simon no longer felt that he belonged in her arms.He took a deep breath, pushed Eleanor away with all his strength, and looked at her coldly."Don't touch me. You have the wrong person."Kevin, who had come in right behind Eleanor, was already so choked up he could barely speak. He rushed forward, his face full of anguish. The moment he met Audra, he blacked out before he could say a word.In his hazy state, nightmares had clung to him. You're not half the man Jeremy is."He dreamed of Marian disowning him and Poppy wanting nothing to do with him.In his blurry memories, the task force commander had stayed by his side the entire time, instructing the doctors to treat his wounds
