Alina’s legs felt like they would give out beneath her, but somehow, she kept standing. The soft thud of Kelvin’s footsteps pulling on clothes, the rustle of the sheets as Jennifer adjusted herself on the bed, it all blurred into a dull roar in her ears.

With the little strength she had left, Alina finally forced herself to speak.

"Kelvin…" Her voice cracked, filled with disbelief. "What… what’s happening? When...when did this start?"

"Oh, Lina," Jennifer said with a slow, smug smile. "Why do you sound so surprised? You’re not stupid. You should’ve seen this coming."

Jennifer laughed, swinging her legs over the side of the bed. "But since you're asking… let’s just say it's been going on long enough."

Alina’s eyes darted to Jennifer, the person she had trusted, shared her childhood with, laughed with. Her chest tightened painfully, and she took a shaky step forward, her eyes filled with hurt. "You...how could you..."

But before she could say more, a rough hand grabbed her arm and yanked her backward.

She stumbled, nearly falling, but caught herself just in time. Wide eyes flew up to meet Kelvin’s face. His face was hard, cold. The look he gave her; full of anger and irritation, made her legs go weak.

“Kelvin…” she whispered, tears now falling down her face. “Kelvin, how…”

"I didn’t want you to find out this way," he muttered. "But since you have, there’s no point pretending anymore."

Alina shook her head, her vision swimming as she desperately held his hand, "No... Just tell me it's a lie. That I'm...."

"I’ve been dating Jennifer." Kelvin said flatly. "Since two weeks after I started seeing you."

Alina felt like the air had been knocked out of her. She stumbled, grabbing the doorframe to stay upright. “No... that can’t be true…”

But Kelvin kept talking, his voice cold and uncaring.

"I've never loved you." His words were sharp, final. "Jennifer is the woman I’ve loved all along. You were just..." He hesitated, the faintest look of guilt crossing his face before hardening again. "...you were just a way to get close to her. I never..."

Alina couldn’t even hear the rest. One sentence echoed in her head:

“I only dated you to get close to her.”

Meanwhile, Jennifer rose from the bed, lazily pulling on a robe, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips. "You should thank me, really. At least now you know where you stand, now you know you were just… something to pass the time."

Alina felt the room spin. Her chest was tight, her head was light, and her heart...her heart felt like it was breaking into tiny, sharp pieces.

All these years of loving him. All the times she had waited for him, stayed by him, cared for him, all the promises. All the moments she had believed in their love. It had all been a lie? They had used her, she was never his first option, not even his second. Her lips quivered as a shiver ran down her spine.

She looked up at Kelvin one last time with tears filled eyes, hoping...praying...for even a hint of regret in his face. But there was nothing. Just the cold, distant man she no longer recognized.

And as Alina stood there, her tears falling silently, she realized this was the end of everything she had worked so hard to hold together.

Without saying a word, she turned and slowly walked out of the room. Her steps were shaky, like her legs might give out at any moment.

She barely made it into the hallway when the sound of laughter drifted toward her. Familiar voices; Kelvin’s friends, Donovan and Noeul. Their conversation rang out casually, carelessly, unaware, or unconcerned, that she could hear them.

"She really thought Kelvin liked her?"Donovan snickered, shaking his head in disbelief. "Man, she’s such a fool. I bet she's out there thinking they're gonna have some perfect anniversary tonight."

Noeul laughed, "If only poor girl knew Kelvin’s been f*cking her sister behind her back this whole time."

Donovan chuckled louder. “She was a genius in school, top of her class, all those honors.... but in real life? Totally clueless. All that brain power, and she couldn’t even see what was happening right in front of her.”

Alina froze for a second, then took a deep breath and forced herself to keep walking. She passed them without saying a word, without even looking at them.

"Lina?" she heard one of them call, almost playfully, but she didn’t turn back. She didn’t stop walking.

She had hoped, just for a second, that maybe… maybe they’d come after her.

But the sound of their laughter behind her crushed that hope in an instant.

"Did she finally find out?" Donovan said, the sound following her.

"Shouldn't we stop her before she tries to kill herself?” Noeul laughed.

Alina didn’t listen. She kept walking until she was out of the house.

Outside, the air was cold, brushing against her damp cheeks.

She didn’t bother with the car, didn’t even look toward it. What was the point? it wasn't hers. None of this was hers anymore.

She just walked, faster and faster, until her legs broke into a run.

From inside the car, Lorraine spotted her through the window.

" Alina?" She called after her in confusion, but Alina didn’t stop.

Everything was falling apart, and all Alina could do was run; tears blinding her, her breathing sharp and ragged.

Lorraine’s eyes widened. Something was wrong. She jumped out of the car and started chasing her.

"Alina! Wait!" Lorraine shouted, but Alina didn’t hear her, or maybe she just didn’t want to.

Her feet pounded the pavement, the sound of her sobs filling her own ears as the world blurred past her.

And then....A blaring horn.

Alina looked up, wide-eyed, and froze.

A car was speeding toward her, the headlights glaring, the driver slamming on the brakes.

For a moment, she didn’t move, didn’t care, her heart aching so much it felt like it might just stop on its own.

The car screeched to a halt just inches away from her.

The driver stepped out, slamming the door shut. He was tall, wearing a dark mask.

"Do you have a death wish?!" his deep voice roared.

Lorraine caught up just then, grabbing Alina’s arm and pulling her back in panic.

"Alina!” she cried, hugging her tightly, heart racing. Then she quickly bowed, her voice trembling. "I—I’m sorry! We’re sorry!" She didn’t look up, didn’t even notice who it was.

Alina raised her head slightly, her lips parting, her voice soft, broken. "I'll be careful next time"

And then everything tilted. Memory of what she just witnessed flooded her head.

The world spun around her, her knees gave way, and then... Blackness.

"Alina!" Lorraine screamed, catching her just as her friend collapsed, trembling and unconscious in her arms.

Mandy pulled back from Finn instantly, putting space between them, her cheeks flushing awkwardly.Leo forced his face to remain calm, ignoring the internal screaming. "Mr Blake is right behind me," he stated, his voice miraculously even. "He's parking the car.""I'll head to the office now. Call me once you’re better, alright?" Mandy faced Finn who could only manage a weak nod.She offered a polite greeting to the man who just walked in and a quick, slightly flustered nod to Leo before slipping out the door. The moment it closed behind her, Finn sank back into the sofa as if his bones had dissolved.Mr. Blake, the family doctor, set his bag down with a sigh that spoke of long familiarity. "Since when did you become like this? You hardly finish a glass. And you emptied a full bottle?"Before Finn could retort, Leo chimed in from where he was arranging supplies on a side table. "He's in love."Finn shot him a glare, but it lacked its usual heat. "Just get me treated already." he muttere

"Good evening, brother," Mandy said the moment the call connected.A low hum from Aiden was her only greeting."So, why did you call?" she asked, moving to sit on the couch."I'm not permitted to call my sister anymore?”"Aiden, not again. I didn't say that," Mandy chuckled softly."You sound happy. Care to share?""Well... it's nothing, really," she said, though she couldn't suppress a smile. "So, why did you call?" she pressed again."Right. I called about the Roberts. They contacted me a few minutes ago to apologize for their daughter. Apparently, they've had her admitted to a psychiatric hospital," Aiden said flatly.Mandy blinked. "Are you serious?" A disbelieving laugh escaped her."No one messes with what concerns me. And when it involves people precious to me... they're digging their own grave," Aiden stated, a hint of cold finality in his tone that made Mandy's brief laugh fade into a sigh of relief."I just sent a picture," Aiden added.Mandy moved the phone from her ear and

Mandy knelt down, wrapping Axel’s small, warm hand in hers. "Time for bed, sweetheart. Let's get you some water first." She stood, guiding him toward the hallway, before turning back to the man who still filled her doorway. "Close my door before you leave."But Zayn didn’t move. His shadow stretched into her foyer, unmoving. "I’d like a word with you, Mandy."The instinct to say no rose in her throat. It was late. She was exhausted. The evening had already been too much. But then Valerie’s words echoed in her mind accusingly: “You reopened a wound he’d been trying to heal since he was ten.” The guilt settled cold and heavy in her chest. She had hurt him. The least she could do now was listen.“Okay,” she said, her voice softer than she meant it to be. She stepped aside. “Come in.”She led him to the living room, gesturing vaguely toward the sofa. "Please, sit. Just a moment."Zayn stayed where he was, tense and still, while she took Axel to the kitchen for water and then to his room.

The engine of Finn’s car roared to life, but for a long minute, he just sat in the restaurant parking lot, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. He wasn’t thinking about the fake phone call he’d used as an excuse to leave. He was only hearing Valerie’s voice, clear as a bell in his memory.Ever since Mandy had told him she was just some old schoolmate to Zayn, Finn’s entire world had made sense because of that one simple story: Zayn Carrington, his childhood friend, was the bad guy. Zayn had loved Mandy, then abandoned her. He had walked away and left her alone for no reason.Finn had built everything around that story. He was the good guy. The one who was ready to stay. The one who was ready to pick up the pieces Zayn had carelessly dropped. The one who would protect Mandy, become her safe place after the damage Zayn caused. But now, with only a few words, that story had shattered. If Mandy needed to apologize… if she had caused Zayn a deep wound… then maybe Zayn hadn’t just

“What do you mean?” Mandy asked, watching Valerie carefully.Valerie opened her mouth, but before she could say anything, her purse buzzed sharply in her purse, the sound interrupting the moment. She paused, pulled out her phone, and her whole demeanor shifted.“Oh, it’s Sam,” she said, her voice brightening as she mentioned her fiancé. She typed a quick reply, a small smile playing on her lips.“Can you—” Mandy started.“I have to go,” Valerie interrupted, closing her purse after pulling out a pen. She grabbed Mandy’s hand and quickly scribbled her number on it. “There. Call me.” She waved. “It was wild seeing you, Mandy! Take care.”And just like that, she walked away, leaving Mandy alone with a palm stained blue from the ink.Mandy let out a soft sigh, stared at the number, and headed back to the table, expecting to find Finn waiting, probably with questions.Instead, she found him standing, his phone pressed to his ear. When he noticed her, he dropped his hand his eyes were filled

The maître d’ led them to a quiet corner table, far from the earlier chaos. Soft music played in the background, mixed with the gentle sound of cutlery. Finn held Mandy’s chair for her, his hand briefly grazing her shoulder. She sat, feeling the ghost of his touch like a brand.A waiter appeared right away. Finn looked at her. “Would you like something to eat?”She shook her head. Her throat felt too tight to speak much. “No, thank you.”Finn nodded and turned to the waiter. “Sparkling water with lime for her, and a Perrier for me.”When the waiter left, the silence between them felt heavier than the noise outside. Mandy folded her hands on the table, her fingers still tense."Finn," she began, her voice quieter than she intended. "Thank you. For… for what you did out there."He leaned back, watching her calmly. “You don’t need to thank me, Mandy. Not for that, not for anything.”“I know you say that, but I still have to,” she replied, finally meeting his eyes. The look in them made h
