Aiden’s gaze remained steady as he looked at her, never breaking eye contact.

“What are you?”

Alina blinked, surprised by the question. She glanced between him and the older woman, who was staring intently at their joined hands.

“I... I don’t understand,” she replied, her voice uncertain.

The older woman stepped closer, her expression softening just a little. “What’s your name?” she asked gently.

Alina straightened her back. “Alina Carpenter,” she said with a small nod.

The woman studied her face closely, then smiled faintly and reached out, her gloved hands gently squeezing Alina’s.

“Would you mind giving us a moment alone, dear?”

Alina gave a polite nod and stepped back quietly, watching as Aiden followed his grandmother down the hallway and into a nearby room.

Once the door closed behind them, the atmosphere shifted.

Aiden’s grandmother walked toward the window, slowly removing her gloves.

“Is it gone?” she asked.

Aiden leaned against the door, “What?”

Day after day, Jesse recovered faster than anyone expected. Within a short time, he was already able to walk around without support. Aiden on the other hand, was also getting better but still felt slight pain in his chest whenever he moved too much.Jesse ended up becoming Aiden’s legs and hands; helping him with almost everything. Sometimes, he’d even try to feed Aiden, but Aiden would frown and snap at him."Are you crazy? I can still eat by myself, I'm not handicapped." Aiden would say, and Jesse would just roll his eyes.Mrs. Hartmann couldn’t help but smile whenever she saw the two friends bickering back and forth from their hospital beds which were now placed in the same ward. Their closeness filled the room with warmth, even in the quiet moments.During those days, Aiden didn’t stop his investigation on Alina’s whereabouts, and didn’t fail to talk to his parents over the phone. He firmly told them not to visit him."I’ll come back home when I’m completely fine and for now, I'm

Seeing how determined Jesse was, the doctor finally let out a quiet sigh and walked closer to him."That’s enough, Mr. Hartmann," he said gently. "I’ll ask the nurse to bring a wheelchair. You shouldn’t be forcing yourself like this. You're still very weak and not supposed to move around."Jesse stopped trying to walk, his breathing unsteady, and slowly lowered his hands from the wall. His mother immediately rushed to his side, carefully supporting his weak body so he wouldn’t fall. The doctor left the ward and returned a few minutes later with a nurse pushing a wheelchair. The nurse stopped it beside Jesse and helped him sit down slowly. Jesse clenched his jaw as a small groan escaped his lips when he bent slowly."Do you want your slippers?" his mom asked softly, already reaching for them.Jesse shook his head quickly. "No need. I’m fine like this. It’s not like I’m going to stand up anyway. Just… just take me to him."She gave him a small nod, trying to hide her worry, then moved b

When Mr. Hartley entered the hospital ward, he saw Alina sitting and staring outside the window. The soft morning light fell on her face, making her look pale. Her eyes were fixed on the sky outside, lost in thoughts she couldn’t put into words."Alina?" he called softly as he walked in, his tone careful, like he was afraid to startle her.She turned slightly to him, watching as he walked closer and sat beside her on the bed."Is… is something wrong?" he asked, trying to smile.Alina stared at him for a moment before asking in a low voice, "Who… are you to me?""Why do you ask?"She turned back to the window before speaking. "Because the first time you walked in here, I felt strange around you. It’s like I don’t like you… like I’ve met you before and you did something to me, but I can’t remember what."He smiled faintly, though his eyes flashed with something else...guilt. He stood and gently touched her cheek. "You’re still as curious as ever," he said quietly. Then he reached into h

Two nurses moved instantly, wheeling over the defibrillator. The anesthesiologist adjusted the oxygen levels again, his hands trembling slightly."Start chest compressions now!"A doctor leaned over Aiden, pressing hard against his chest in quick, steady thrusts while another checked the IV lines, but was careful not to press on the operated spot."Charge the defibrillator!" the lead surgeon ordered."But doctor..." the younger nurse hesitated. "His heart was transplanted barely two weeks ago. The shock could loosen the staples and cause internal bleeding.”The lead surgeon’s eyes hardened. "If we don’t act, there’ll be nothing left to save. Charge it!""Charging… CLEAR!"The paddles pressed against Aiden’s chest and his body jolted violently as the electric current surged through him.The monitor flickered...the line was still flat."No rhythm. Again!""Charging… CLEAR!"Aiden’s body jumped once more. Sweat ran down the doctors’ faces, and the anesthesiologist’s voice cracked slightl

Jesse’s parents paced anxiously in front of the operating room, their hands clasped together as they prayed silently. Mrs. Hartmann’s lips trembled with every word she whispered under her breath. Her eyes stayed fixed on the red light glowing above the double doors—the sign that the surgery was still in progress."I can’t just stand here," she whispered anxiously. "What if something goes wrong? What if..."Her husband stopped her gently. "Don’t say that. They’ll be fine. You know Jesse... he’s strong. He’ll pull through. So will Aiden."Mrs. Hartmann nodded but couldn’t calm her racing heart. She suddenly remembered something."Oh my goodness, Aiden’s parents…" she muttered and hurriedly reached into her purse for her phone. She scrolled quickly and pressed Jessica’s number.Jessica answered after two rings, her voice sounding both tired and worried. "Mrs. Hartmann?""Yes, it’s me," Mrs. Hartmann said, trying to sound steady. "I just wanted to let you know… they’ve both been taken i

Soon, Aiden pulled his hands away from Jesse. "Stop being emotional," he said quietly, forcing a small smile. "It’s awkward."Johnny stepped out to call the doctor, while Mr. Hartmann walked fully into the room, setting down the small bag. He unzipped it and brought out a food flask."I knew you’d wake up the second you heard Aiden’s voice," Mr. Hartmann said with a weak smile.Jesse rolled his eyes slightly, his lips trembling with effort.Soon the doctor entered, checking Jesse’s vitals and looking at the monitors. Aiden leaned forward nervously."Doctor, what’s wrong? Is he okay?"The doctor’s tone was calm. "He’ll be fine as long as he gets operated on quickly."Aiden nodded, swallowing hard. "Thank you."“Let him eat first. I’ll give him his injections after,” the doctor said, stepping back.Aiden took the flask from Mr. Hartmann and scooped a spoonful of food, but Jesse frowned."Are you crazy? Do I look like a child to you? Or your wife?" Jesse said weakly, trying to push the s
