Lila POV

"Ryan, stop! You're hurting me!" I cried out as he dragged me through the hallway.

But he did not stop. He did not slow down. He did not even look back at me.

I could hear Cassandra's voice behind us, calling his name over and over. "Ryan! Baby, where are you going? Ryan, wait for me!"

He ignored her completely. It was like she did not exist.

Students jumped out of our way as Ryan pulled me along. Their eyes were wide with shock, their mouths open with curiosity. This was not normal. Ryan never talked to me at school, and he certainly never touched me like this.

We reached the stairs, and Ryan kept moving. He dragged me down the first flight, then stopped suddenly at the corner where no one could see us. The space was small and dark, hidden from the main hallway.

He released my wrist and stood there, breathing hard. His chest was rising and falling like he had just run a marathon. His eyes were burning with an emotion I had never seen before.

Anger. Pure, raw anger.

"Ryan, what is wrong with you?" I asked, rubbing my wrist where his fingers had gripped too tight.

"What is wrong with me?" he repeated, his voice getting louder. "What is wrong with you, Lila?"

I took a step back. Ryan had never yelled at me before. Never.

"I do not understand," I whispered.

"You do not understand?" Ryan laughed, but it was not a happy sound. It was bitter and cold. "Let me explain it to you then. Last night, I lost the biggest game of my life. My dreams died on that ice because of Derek Stone. And today, I find out that my own sister is dating him?"

The word "sister" felt like a knife in my heart. That was all I would ever be to him. Just his sister.

"Ryan, it is not like that," I started to say.

"Then what is it like?" he demanded, stepping closer to me. "Because from where I was standing, it looked exactly like that. You were kissing him, Lila. In the middle of the school hallway. Where everyone could see you."

My face burned with shame. The kiss had been Derek's idea. Part of the act. Part of the deal. But I could not tell Ryan any of that.

"He is my boyfriend," I said quietly, the lie tasting like ash in my mouth.

"Your boyfriend?" Ryan's voice cracked on the word. "Since when? Yesterday you hated him. You told me a hundred times that he was arrogant and mean. You said you would never speak to him. And now he is your boyfriend?"

I stayed silent because I did not know what to say. Everything was so complicated. Derek had my secrets. Cassandra had my past. And Ryan had my heart without even knowing it.

"You know what this looks like, right?" Ryan continued, his voice getting angrier. "It looks like you waited until I lost. It looks like you waited until Derek destroyed my career, and then you ran straight into his arms. Like you were celebrating my failure."

"No!" I cried out, tears burning my eyes. "I would never do that to you! You have to believe me!"

"Then explain it to me!" Ryan shouted. "Because right now, Lila, I feel like you stabbed me in the back. Right after my worst moment, you go and kiss my biggest enemy. Do you have any idea how that makes me feel?"

His words hit me like punches. I had never thought about it that way. I had been so focused on keeping my secrets safe that I had not considered how this would look to Ryan.

"I did not betray you," I whispered, my voice shaking.

"It sure feels like you did," Ryan said coldly.

The pain in his eyes was breaking my heart into a million pieces. He looked hurt, confused, and angry all at the same time. I wanted to tell him everything. I wanted to explain that this was all fake, that I did not want to be with Derek, that the only person I wanted was him.

But I could not.

"Ryan, please listen to me," I begged. "Derek and I—"

"Derek and you what?" Ryan interrupted. "Are in love? Going to get married? Have babies together?"

"No! It is not—"

"Not what? Not serious? Because that kiss looked pretty serious to me."

I took a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts. I had to say something. I had to make him understand without revealing the truth.

"I did not betray you," I said again, more firmly this time. "The timing was just bad. I did not plan for any of this to happen."

Ryan stared at me with those beautiful eyes that had haunted my dreams for three years. "You could have anyone, Lila. Anyone in this entire school. Why him? Why the one person who destroyed everything I worked for?"

Because he is blackmailing me, I wanted to scream. Because he has my secrets and I have no choice.

But the words stayed trapped in my throat.

"I cannot explain it," I said finally. "I just—"

The sound of high heels clicking on the stairs cut me off. My heart dropped into my stomach as I recognized that sound.

Cassandra appeared at the top of the stairs, her blonde hair perfect, her smile sweet as poison.

"There you are, baby!" she called out to Ryan. "I have been looking everywhere for you!"

She started walking down the stairs toward us, and I felt my whole body go tense.

No. Not now. Not here.

"Ryan," I said quickly, desperately trying to finish what I was saying. "I did not betray—"

But Cassandra had already reached us, and she wrapped her arms around Ryan like he belonged to her.

And maybe he did.

Lila POVI do not know how long I sat on that floor.Long enough for the sun to set outside my window. Long enough for the house to grow quiet as my mother and Robert finished dinner downstairs without me. Long enough for my legs to go numb from sitting in the same position. The marks on my arms had faded from red to pink. They would be gone by tomorrow, leaving no evidence of what I had done to myself. Just like everything else in my life lately, the pain was temporary but the damage underneath lasted longer.I heard footsteps in the hallway outside my room. Heavy footsteps. Not my mother's quick, angry steps. These were slower, more hesitant. Then a soft knock on my door."Lila?" Ryan's voice came through the wood. "Can I come in?"I did not answer. I just stared at the door, wondering what he could possibly want from me now.The doorknob turned, but the door only opened a crack before hitting the chair I had wedged under the handle."Lila, please," Ryan said. "I need to talk to you

Lila POVWhen I got home from school that afternoon, my mother was waiting for me in the living room. She did not say a word. She just held out her hand.I knew what she wanted."Mom, please," I started to say."Give me your phone, Lila," she said coldly. "And your laptop.""But I need them for school. I need them to—""You need them for nothing. You have proven that you cannot be trusted with technology. You used it to write those disgusting stories. You used it to communicate with boys who are clearly a bad influence on you. So now you lose the privilege."My hands shook as I pulled my phone from my pocket and handed it to her. She took it without looking at me."The laptop too," she said.I went upstairs to my room and retrieved my laptop from my desk. When I brought it down, my mother was already disconnecting the internet router."You will go to school, you will come straight home, and you will stay in your room. No phone. No internet. No communication with anyone until this mess

Derek POVMy teammates walked away after that, leaving me standing alone with James.Well, almost alone. A few students had witnessed the entire confrontation, and they were staring at me with a mixture of shock and curiosity."That was intense," James said quietly, looking at my swollen lip. "You should put ice on that.""I am fine," I said, though my jaw was throbbing.James studied me for a long moment. "You really care about her, do not you? This is not just about doing the right thing. You actually have feelings for Lila."I did not deny it. There was no point anymore."Yeah," I admitted. "I do.""Even though it might cost you everything?" James asked."Especially because it might cost me everything," I replied. "If I walk away now, if I abandon her to save myself, then what kind of person does that make me?"James was quiet for a moment, then he nodded slowly. "Okay. So what is the plan?"I looked at him in surprise. "What?""The plan," James repeated. "You are trying to defend

Derek POVThe reaction to my speech was mixed. Some students took the petitions I offered, reading them carefully before deciding whether to sign. Others walked away shaking their heads, clearly not interested in defending Lila. But at least some people were listening. At least I had planted a seed of doubt about the narrative everyone had accepted as truth.I watched Lila walk into the school building, her shoulders hunched, her face pale and exhausted. She looked like she had been through hell. And she had. Because of me. Because I had been too weak to stand up for her when it mattered most. But I was done being weak."Derek!"I turned to see James jogging toward me, his face tight with concern. James had been my closest friend on the team since I transferred to this school. He was one of the few people who actually knew me beyond my reputation as the bad boy hockey player."Hey," I said, giving him a slight nod."What are you doing, man?" James asked, looking at the petitions in my

Lila POVThe drive home from school was silent except for the sound of my mother crying quietly in the front seat.I sat in the back, staring out the window, my fever making everything feel distant and unreal. The three day deadline kept repeating in my mind like a countdown to my execution.Three days to prove I deserved a second chance.Three days to find teachers who would speak on my behalf after what I had written.Three days to explain the unexplainable. It felt impossible. When we arrived home, my mother went straight to her room and slammed the door. I heard her sobbing through the walls, and the sound made my chest ache with guilt.Robert stood in the hallway looking lost and tired. He gave me a sad look before following my mother upstairs.I dragged myself to my room and collapsed on my bed, still wearing my school uniform. My fever had gotten worse throughout the meeting. I was shaking with chills one moment and burning up the next. But I could not sleep. Every time I close

Lila POVThe principal's office felt like a courtroom.I sat in a chair facing a long table where three administrators sat watching me with stern expressions. Principal Hayes was in the center, flanked by Vice Principal Morrison and the Dean of Students, Mr. Carter. My mother sat to my right, her posture perfect, her face a mask of controlled fury. Robert sat to my left, his hands folded in his lap, looking uncomfortable and sad.And I sat between them, burning with fever, shaking with fear, feeling like I was about to collapse at any moment."Thank you for coming in today," Principal Hayes began, her voice formal and cold. "I know this is a difficult situation for everyone involved."My mother opened her mouth to speak, but Principal Hayes held up her hand."Please, Mrs. Richmond, let me finish. Then you will have your opportunity to speak."My mother pressed her lips together tightly but nodded.Principal Hayes turned her attention to me, and I felt like I was being examined under a
