Darren's Pov

Scouts lined the stands that morning, more than I'd seen all week, clipboards and stopwatches and the kind of quiet, watching stillness that made every drill feel like it mattered twice as much as it had the day before.

Coach called us in before we even hit the ice.

"Change of plans," he said, looking between me and Asher. "Leadership drill. Both captains, together, full session. Scouts want to see how you two operate under pressure, working with someone outside your usual system."

  • Fallen In Control    The Unknown texted.

Darren's PovI didn't go straight home after the drive back from the hospital that night. I went to the rink instead, the practice one, not the shared camp facility, using the spare key Coach had given me back when I first made captain. Empty. Dark except for the emergency lighting along the walls. Exactly what I needed.I sat on the bench for a long time before I even put my skates on, gear bag open beside me, phone silent in my pocket for once. No calls. No texts. Just quiet, the kind I hadn't let myself sit in for weeks.I laced up slow and skated out onto the ice alone, no drills, no plays, just moving in long, aimless loops to feel something other than the tight, constant pressure sitting behind my ribs.It didn't work the way it used to.I stopped near the boards eventually, breathing hard even though I hadn't pushed myself that hard, and stood there a moment with my forehead resting against the cold glass. Everything from the last two weeks sat there behind my eyes at once. The

  • Fallen In Control    Scrimmage

Darren's PovStella called at two in the morning."She's spiking a fever," she said, voice fast and thin with panic. "The nurse says it's not the surgery, it's something else, an infection maybe, they're running tests now.""I'm coming.""You have practice in five hours.""I don't care."I drove to the hospital in the dark, hands tight on the wheel, and spent the rest of the night in a plastic chair beside Priscilla's bed, watching machines beep and nurses come and go with clipboards and quiet, careful voices that never told me enough. By sunrise the fever had come down some. Not gone. Down."Go," Stella said, when I didn't move from the chair. "I've got her. You can't miss camp today, not with everything Coach already said."I didn't want to leave. I left anyway, because staying wouldn't fix anything and missing camp definitely would make things worse, and I was too tired to figure out a version of the day where both things could be true at once.~~I showed up running on no sleep, g

  • Fallen In Control    Was the tension necessary?

Darren's PovI sat in the car before practice with my bank app open, running the numbers again even though I already knew every possible way they added up. Sold car money, still stuck in limbo. Gym paychecks, small and slow. Pawn shop cash, already spent trying to fix a hole I'd only made bigger. Betting money, gone entirely.None of it moved the number where it needed to go. I stared at the screen until the digits blurred slightly, then closed the app and sat there another minute, forehead against the steering wheel, breathing through it before I had to walk in and be captain for another two hours.Coach called me into his office the second I stepped off the ice."Sit," he said, no preamble this time.I sat."I've been getting calls," he said, folding his hands on the desk. "About you. About your performance the last few days. Missed passes, late arrivals, that blow-up with Reyes on the ice yesterday. Scouts are asking questions I don't have good answers for anymore.""I know I've be

  • Fallen In Control    Darren

Darren's PovI heard about the pool from one of the older guys on the team, half joking, half serious, the kind of thing that got passed around in locker rooms in a low voice like it wasn't actually a big deal. A betting pool, tied to the camp scrimmages, players putting money in and splitting whatever came out based on outcomes nobody officially tracked but everyone unofficially bet on anyway.I should have walked away the second I heard the number someone had already turned a small stake into.I didn't."How's it work," I asked, catching one of the older Falcons, Reyes, in the equipment room after practice. He glanced around before answering, like it mattered who overheard even though half the room already knew. "You put money in on a scrimmage outcome. Who wins, by how much, whatever the pool's set up for that day. Odds shift based on who's playing who. You get it right, you get a cut of the pot.""How much to get in.""Depends on the day. Today's pool's decent size, some of the ol

  • Fallen In Control    Dearest Morrison Wolfe......

Darren's PovI woke up angry. Not at the deadline, not at my mother, not even at the sponsor thing Coach had dropped on me — angry at myself, for the bar, for how long I'd sat there, for how easy it had been to let my guard down in front of someone I was supposed to despise on sight.I got to camp early, before anyone else, and ran through my own drills alone on the ice just to burn some of it off before the team showed up. It didn't work. By the time everyone filed in, I still felt like something coiled too tight, ready to snap the second anything gave it a reason.Asher gave it a reason without even trying. We were ten minutes into a passing drill, same drill as yesterday, same rhythm we'd found together, except today I wasn't interested in finding it again. He called for the puck on the left, same as before, and I sent it hard, harder than the drill needed, forcing him to reach for it instead of catching it clean. He recovered fine. Didn't say anything. Just looked at me for a seco

  • Fallen In Control    Mask-off Asher

Darren's PovI found Coach again after practice, same office, same papers everywhere, except this time I didn't bother easing into it."I need help," I said, standing in the doorway. "Real help. Not advice. Not maybe. I have forty-eight hours before my sister loses her surgery slot, and I don't have the money, and I've tried everything else I know how to try."He looked up slow, set his pen down, studied me for a long moment like he was deciding how much to actually say."Sit down, Morrison."I sat.He was quiet for a second, rubbing a hand over his jaw. "I told you before, my hands are tied on advances. That's still true. But." He paused, choosing his next words carefully. "You played well today. Real well. That leadership drill, working with Wolfe — scouts noticed. And you're not the only one who noticed.""Meaning what.""Meaning I got a call an hour ago. One of the Icebulls' organizational sponsors, a name that carries weight in this league, has been asking questions about you. W

  • Fallen In Control    Imaginary Families.

Darren’s POVI was running through the hospital before I even understood how I got there. One moment Stella was grabbing my arm, telling me my sister had fainted, and the next moment my body had already moved without waiting for my mind. I didn’t even stop to think about my skates. I tore them off

  • Fallen In Control    The Ice in my veins

Darren’s POV“Darren! Focus or get off my field!”The coach’s voice cut through the rink like a blade, sharp and angry, echoing off the walls as if it wanted to hit me directly in the chest. I tightened my grip on my stick and forced myself to move again, but my body was already behind my mind. Ev

  • Fallen In Control    Watch Your Dog

Asher’s POVPhilip texted me the location right after the game ended, and I didn’t really plan on coming at first, but after the coach meeting about the upcoming draft talk for elite leagues, I needed somewhere to clear my head before going home. The Falcons had been beaten tonight, and everyone kn

  • Fallen In Control    Don't Break Up With Me.

Darren’s POV“Drink! Drink! Drink!”The chant was loud and rough, bottles knocking against each other as my teammates tried to shake off the loss. Someone pushed a beer into my hand and I didn’t argue, I just took it and drank, letting the bitter taste sit on my tongue longer than it should. It did
