Chapter 2

Author: Washing Wheat
The ringing came with Evelyn's frantic pounding on the door. "Adeline! Open the door! I know Elio's in there!"

I shuddered and shrank under the covers.

Adeline pressed a hand on my shoulder and gave it a soothing pat. "Don't be scared. I'll go see."

She stood, walked to the entryway, and opened the door.

Evelyn charged straight in. Her designer pantsuit looked slightly rumpled, and her eyes were bloodshot from a sleepless night. When she saw me propped up against the headboard, she strode over. "Elio, come with me."

She reached for my wrist. I flinched and pulled away from her touch.

Evelyn's hand froze in midair, and her face darkened. "Why are you pulling away? I'm your wife! Come to the hospital with me. Hudson's condition is getting worse, and he urgently needs your stem cells to rebuild his blood."

She said it as though it were natural, as though I were not a person but a blood bank.

I looked at the woman who had once taught me how to dress and how to eat, and spoke softly. "Evelyn, I'm so tired."

So much of my hair had fallen out from all the blessings that I knew I must look awful. "I don't understand why you're doing this, but I don't want to go anymore."

Evelyn's brows drew together sharply. She seemed to think I was being unreasonable.

"Elio, can't you tell what's more important right now? Hudson is mortal. He has leukemia, and he'll die! You're different. You're an angel! You fell from heaven, so you can't die! What's the harm in taking a little of your bone marrow? It'll grow back on its own in a few days!"

She looked down at me, impatience written across her face. "Once Hudson has fully recovered, I'll bring you home and we'll have a good life together, all right?"

I shook my head. I did not know what death was, but I knew pain. Each time the needle drove into my bone to draw out the marrow, I felt as if I were being torn apart alive. "I don't want to."

I threw back the covers and tried to climb out barefoot on the other side of the bed. "I don't want to stay here anymore."

I did not want to stay by Evelyn's side, and I did not want to stay here with Adeline either. I wanted to leave.

Evelyn lost the last of her patience. She stepped forward and clamped her hand around my arm. "You don't get a say in this! A life is at stake. You're coming with me!"

Her grip was so tight that the needle marks, which had only just scabbed over, began to bleed again. The pain made me suck in a sharp breath, and I started to struggle on instinct. "Let go of me!"

I looked to Adeline in the doorway for help. "Adeline, help me."

Adeline walked over. She saw the pleading in my eyes and let out a gentle sigh. Then she reached out, not to push Evelyn away, but to take firm hold of my other arm, which was still flailing.

Her voice stayed sweet. "Elio, be good. Ms. Sheridan is right. Saving a life matters more than anything. Just bear with it for now. As soon as the surgery is over, I'll come get you."

My eyes went wide with disbelief. She had said that she was the only one who would never hurt me. She had said that it was dangerous out there and that she was the only one who was good to me. Why was she helping Evelyn hold me down?

Evelyn gave a cold laugh. "Smart choice. Adeline, I owe you one."

The two women took me by either arm and hauled me up between them like a prisoner being led away. I kicked with everything I had, but I was far too weak. The impurity of the mortal world had crushed an angel's strength beneath it.

"Let go of me... Let go of me!"

The clouds began to churn, and faint golden light flickered among them. I knew the passage to take me home had opened."Nothing." I turned my gaze back down, my voice as calm as if I were talking about the weather. "It was only a judgment that came three years too late."I turned and walked out one step at a time. The crowd parted on its own, leaving a wide path for me.Just as I was about to step through the hospital doors, Evelyn summoned the last of her strength. She scrambled out of the crowd and shouted at my back."Elio! If... If we could start over... If I had never brought Hudson home, if I had always treated you the way I did that first year... Would you... Would you have stayed? Would you have been my husband for the rest of my life?"Her voice was full of desperate pleading and one last shred of hope. She was trying to use "what if" to cover up the wrongs she had already done.I stopped walking, but I did not look back. I only turned my face slightly and left her with

"Did you really think acting devoted could cover up how selfish you are? You kept saying you loved me, but you never cared how much pain I was in."What you wanted was never me. All you wanted was a plaything you could control, something that depended on you completely."Adeline was drenched in sweat from the pain, but she still stared at me, her eyes full of an obsession that would not let go."That's not true... I do love you... If it weren't for you, I would've frozen to death under that bridge when I was eight! You gave me a second chance at life, so why shouldn't you be mine?"I looked at her and gave my right hand a light flick. A streak of golden light shot into Adeline's forehead.Adeline's whole body jolted, and her eyes suddenly lost their focus."Since you miss that bridge so much, I'll take back everything you've gained in this world. Go back to being the beggar who was about to freeze to death."The moment the golden light sank into her forehead, it was as if her so

She clutched her chest, as if a gaping hole had been torn through it.On the gurney nearby, Hudson was barely breathing. He struggled to turn his head, and his eyes, which had always been so calculating, held nothing but endless fear."Elio... Save me..."He reached out a skeletal hand toward me, his voice as shrill as a lost soul's. "If you don't save me, Evelyn will kill you!"He was still trying to use Evelyn to threaten me.I walked unhurriedly over to the gurney and looked down at his face, now covered in age spots from how fast he was aging. "Kill me?"I raised an eyebrow and glanced at Evelyn, who was still on the ground, clutching her finger and howling. "She can't even stand up right now. How exactly is she going to kill me?"Hudson was desperate. He suddenly threw himself off the gurney and wrapped his arms tightly around my ankle."I was wrong! I'm begging you, give me back my life! I don't want your clothes anymore, and I won't try to take Evelyn from you either! Ju

I looked down at Evelyn, who was kneeling at my feet. "Why?"I tilted my head, my voice full of innocent curiosity, just as it had been when I first arrived in the human world. "Didn't you say he had a terminal illness and would die, while I was an angel and couldn't?"Evelyn nodded frantically. "Yes! Yes! So save him! Nothing will happen to you!"I smiled, and it was a dazzling smile. "But I already died just now."I pointed at the patch of concrete where I had fallen. "Besides, the reason he's like this now is that I took back all the life I blessed him with before."I watched Evelyn's pupils widen and spelled it out word by word. "I've taken back the life I gave him.""You!" Evelyn pointed at me, her eyes wild with rage, as if she were looking at a monster. "You're so vicious! How could you be this cruel?"I raised my foot and brought it down on the finger she was pointing at me, grinding it without mercy. There was a sharp crack."Ahh!" Evelyn let out a piercing scream.I

Both women were flung backward and slammed hard into the hospital lobby's glass doors. The glass shattered with a piercing crash."Ugh..." Evelyn clutched her chest and coughed up a mouthful of blood. She stared at me in shock, as if she could not believe that force had come from me."Elio... What are you doing?"Adeline struggled to her feet, one hand pressed to her shoulder. Her delicate gold‑rimmed glasses lay shattered across the floor, and her eyes were full of disbelief. "Elio, did you just hit me?"I walked slowly toward them and looked down at the two mortals as if they were insects. "I told you before. I won't be anyone's cure, and I won't be anyone's caged bird."My voice was calm, yet it carried a weight no one could resist. "Evelyn, you took my blood and my bone marrow and told me I owed you. Now I have paid that debt with my life."Adeline, you used that so‑called light to guilt me and tried to lock me in a cage. Now that light has gone out."I watched their faces g
