Chapter 3

作者: Washing Wheat
Adeline leaned close to my ear, her voice barely audible. "Don't blame me, Elio. You'll only stay quietly in my cage once you see how cruel Evelyn really is."

I was shoved into Evelyn's car. The click of the door locks sounded like a death knell.

Evelyn sat in the driver's seat and shot me a cold look through the rearview mirror. "Behave yourself. Don't make me tie you up."

I curled up in the corner of the back seat, hugged my knees, and stayed silent. The scenery outside the window rushed past.

I thought back to our first year of marriage. Because I did not understand human customs, I had poured dish soap into a glass and handed it to one of Evelyn's friends.

That day, Evelyn had driven me home just like this, but she had not scolded me. She had laughed and ruffled my hair. "Elio, how are you so clumsy? It's okay, though. You've got me."

Back then, there had been light in her eyes. That light had turned into a bottomless abyss.

The car did not go to the hospital. It went back to the Sheridan mansion.

Evelyn dragged me by the wrist the whole way, and I stumbled into the living room after her. The moment we stepped inside, the cool scent of men's cologne hit me.

Hudson sat on the sofa. He wore my favorite white tailored trench coat and held the mug I always drank from.

When he saw us come in, he set the mug down and rose unsteadily to his feet. "Evelyn, you brought Elio back?"

His handsome face had a sickly pallor, but his eyes held a smugness he could not hide. "I'm sorry, Elio. I was just so cold that I borrowed your coat for a bit. You don't mind, do you?"

I looked at the coat. Evelyn had bought it for me with her first paycheck. I could hardly bear to wear it, so I had always kept it hung at the very back of the closet.

I stared at him. "Take it off."

Hudson flinched and looked at Evelyn with a wounded expression. "Evelyn, is he mad at me? I really didn't mean it. I'll take it off and give it back right now..."

As he spoke, he reached for the buttons at his chest. Before he had undone two, his body went limp and he began to fall.

Evelyn lunged forward and caught him before he could hit the floor. "Hudson! Are you okay?"

Hudson slumped against her, his voice barely above a whisper. "Evelyn, my head is spinning... Am I dying?"

Evelyn pulled him closer, stricken, and turned to glare at me. "Elio! What's wrong with you? It's just a stupid coat! If Hudson wants to wear it, he can wear it! Do you really have to push him like this?"

I stood perfectly straight while the bruises on my wrist throbbed dully. "That's mine. I don't want him touching it."

Evelyn helped Hudson onto the sofa, strode over to me, and raised her hand.

Smack!

The slap landed hard across my face. My head snapped to one side, and my ears rang.

I slowly turned my head back and looked at Evelyn's face, which was twisted with rage. I did not feel sad. I only felt confused. "Did you just hit me?"

Evelyn's hand trembled slightly. She seemed not to have expected it of herself, but the guilt in her eyes hardened into something cold.

"That's so you'll learn your lesson! Hudson is barely hanging on, and you're fussing over a piece of clothing! Where's your kindness? Aren't you supposed to be an angel? When did you become so vicious and selfish?"

Vicious? Selfish?

  • Fallen Light   Chapter 14

The clouds began to churn, and faint golden light flickered among them. I knew the passage to take me home had opened."Nothing." I turned my gaze back down, my voice as calm as if I were talking about the weather. "It was only a judgment that came three years too late."I turned and walked out one step at a time. The crowd parted on its own, leaving a wide path for me.Just as I was about to step through the hospital doors, Evelyn summoned the last of her strength. She scrambled out of the crowd and shouted at my back."Elio! If... If we could start over... If I had never brought Hudson home, if I had always treated you the way I did that first year... Would you... Would you have stayed? Would you have been my husband for the rest of my life?"Her voice was full of desperate pleading and one last shred of hope. She was trying to use "what if" to cover up the wrongs she had already done.I stopped walking, but I did not look back. I only turned my face slightly and left her with

  • Fallen Light   Chapter 13

"Did you really think acting devoted could cover up how selfish you are? You kept saying you loved me, but you never cared how much pain I was in."What you wanted was never me. All you wanted was a plaything you could control, something that depended on you completely."Adeline was drenched in sweat from the pain, but she still stared at me, her eyes full of an obsession that would not let go."That's not true... I do love you... If it weren't for you, I would've frozen to death under that bridge when I was eight! You gave me a second chance at life, so why shouldn't you be mine?"I looked at her and gave my right hand a light flick. A streak of golden light shot into Adeline's forehead.Adeline's whole body jolted, and her eyes suddenly lost their focus."Since you miss that bridge so much, I'll take back everything you've gained in this world. Go back to being the beggar who was about to freeze to death."The moment the golden light sank into her forehead, it was as if her so

She clutched her chest, as if a gaping hole had been torn through it.On the gurney nearby, Hudson was barely breathing. He struggled to turn his head, and his eyes, which had always been so calculating, held nothing but endless fear."Elio... Save me..."He reached out a skeletal hand toward me, his voice as shrill as a lost soul's. "If you don't save me, Evelyn will kill you!"He was still trying to use Evelyn to threaten me.I walked unhurriedly over to the gurney and looked down at his face, now covered in age spots from how fast he was aging. "Kill me?"I raised an eyebrow and glanced at Evelyn, who was still on the ground, clutching her finger and howling. "She can't even stand up right now. How exactly is she going to kill me?"Hudson was desperate. He suddenly threw himself off the gurney and wrapped his arms tightly around my ankle."I was wrong! I'm begging you, give me back my life! I don't want your clothes anymore, and I won't try to take Evelyn from you either! Ju

I looked down at Evelyn, who was kneeling at my feet. "Why?"I tilted my head, my voice full of innocent curiosity, just as it had been when I first arrived in the human world. "Didn't you say he had a terminal illness and would die, while I was an angel and couldn't?"Evelyn nodded frantically. "Yes! Yes! So save him! Nothing will happen to you!"I smiled, and it was a dazzling smile. "But I already died just now."I pointed at the patch of concrete where I had fallen. "Besides, the reason he's like this now is that I took back all the life I blessed him with before."I watched Evelyn's pupils widen and spelled it out word by word. "I've taken back the life I gave him.""You!" Evelyn pointed at me, her eyes wild with rage, as if she were looking at a monster. "You're so vicious! How could you be this cruel?"I raised my foot and brought it down on the finger she was pointing at me, grinding it without mercy. There was a sharp crack."Ahh!" Evelyn let out a piercing scream.I

  • Fallen Light   Chapter 9

Both women were flung backward and slammed hard into the hospital lobby's glass doors. The glass shattered with a piercing crash."Ugh..." Evelyn clutched her chest and coughed up a mouthful of blood. She stared at me in shock, as if she could not believe that force had come from me."Elio... What are you doing?"Adeline struggled to her feet, one hand pressed to her shoulder. Her delicate gold‑rimmed glasses lay shattered across the floor, and her eyes were full of disbelief. "Elio, did you just hit me?"I walked slowly toward them and looked down at the two mortals as if they were insects. "I told you before. I won't be anyone's cure, and I won't be anyone's caged bird."My voice was calm, yet it carried a weight no one could resist. "Evelyn, you took my blood and my bone marrow and told me I owed you. Now I have paid that debt with my life."Adeline, you used that so‑called light to guilt me and tried to lock me in a cage. Now that light has gone out."I watched their faces g
