My palms trembled as I entered the Sterling mansion's pristine, frigid hallway. Though the polished floors shone under the towering chandeliers, the burden of what I was about to do, what I was going to expose, felt like a stone in my chest. The air was thick with years of buried secrets and falsehoods waiting to be revealed.

Though I didn't expect to see her here, there she was. Seated in her normal place beside the great window, Maxwell's mother, Eleanor Sterling, Drawn curtains created a dark shadow around her. The one who had always looked down on me, the one who had never once concealed her dislike for someone like me, someone who didn't belong in their world.

Sophia, you've been avoiding me, she remarked with a seductive voice and a predatory grin at the corners of her mouth. "How... to be expected."

I did not answer right away. I stepped closer and my eyes narrowed as I evaluated her. She was all the woman I remembered, strong, shrewd, and tenacious. But she was suddenly changed in some way. Her eyes lacked the same frigidness they always had. There was a darkness there, something she had not allowed me to see earlier.

I could no longer be mute. Eleanor, you know what brought me here. The fact. Though I had no option, my voice was stronger than I believed. I could no longer escape this.

Eleanor's smile faded to one of frigid amusement. "Truth?" she said again, almost as though the term were alien to her. Sofia, you were never meant to be in their universe. You ought to have known better, Sophia.

The words struck me like a slap in the face. She wasn't simply discussing me; she was discussing Marcus. Regarding the life, I had sought to shield him from. "What did you intend for me?" I said, my voice heavy with the awareness of how far this went.

Eleanor's eyes danced with a terrible secret she had kept concealed far too long. Sophia, I always knew who you were. But you, of all individuals, did not learn soon enough.

Her remarks left me feeling bad. I had been just a pawn in a game I didn't even know ran.

Facing the skyline, my head was a tornado of ideas I couldn't seem to contain; the wind lashed through the penthouse open window. Maxwell was still battling, but it wasn't only him I had to worry about. Clayton Montgomery was the one.

Having spent so many years evading the monsters of Maxwell's past, I now find them here dragging me back into the chaos I believed I had fled. Always lurking in the shadows, waiting for the appropriate time to attack, Clayton had been present.

The call came in without notice. His voice was silky, deceptive like silk being pulled over the glass. From the other end, Clayton scoffed, "Maxwell, this is only the start." "You will regret ever crossing me, I promise."

I understood just what he meant. Clayton wasn’t going to let me go either; he wasn’t going to stop until Maxwell’s empire lay in ashes. The key to bringing everything down was my relationship with Maxwell.

"I don't care what you think you can do, Clayton," I shouted, my voice slicing through the tension. "You have lost already."

He laughed, the sound resembling nails scraping over a blackboard. You don't get it, right? Sophia, this is not about triumph. This is about authority. You are already involved in the game.

Rage rising in my chest, I hung the phone down. I could not allow him to utilize me. I would not let him. But every passing second made me more aware of the walls closing in around me.

The night was calm, perhaps too calm. The unexpected phone ring pulled me from my reverie as I gazed out at the gloomy skyline. The number was unlisted and not known. Though I hesitated, I decided to pick it up.

Whitman, Sophia The voice on the other end was low, muted as if they were terrified of being heard. You are in too deep.

The words reverberating in my head made my heart skip a beat. Who is this? I said, my voice tinged with stress.

"You don't have to know who I am," the voice said, "but you must grasp what you're up against. The folks you are interacting with... they are more hazardous than you realize.

Their words' weight crept over me, making me feel a chill run down my back. Was this a different game? Another play in this warped chess game I hadn't even realized I was participating in.

As it went on, the voice was too calm. "You believe you're saving Marcus, but you're entering a snare. You have no clue how far it extends.

The words cut through my mind like a dagger, making my stomach churn. I had tried to protect Marcus, to hide him from all, but now... now it seemed as though I was the one in peril.

My fingers trembling, I hung up the call. The walls closing in made the space look smaller. Whoever this individual was, they knew something I lacked knowledge about. A knowledge I lacked.

Alone in the dark light of my apartment, I sat staring at the stack of documents on my desk, which served as a sharp reminder of the life I had sought to leave behind. Flipping through the papers, my fingers trembled with each page exposing something deeper than the previous one. The truth's weight suffocated me with its consequences, pressing down on me.

Sitting at the top was a letter from a pharmaceutical business, the same one in which Maxwell's family owned an interest. The name of the business seemed too familiar and I couldn't see why my stomach turned when I saw it.

I didn't want to accept it. I was unable to. Reading helped me to see more clearly the more I did it. Every page bore my name, my signature, as though I had been a willing participant in the corruption I had fought so hard to avoid.

The room appeared to close in on me as my heart raced. What have I done? Staring at the proof that had been confronting me all along, I muttered, my voice almost inaudible.

I had been involved in something far larger than I had first believed. I had been exploited and controlled; now, my relationship with Maxwell's family was no longer only about our past but rather about a tangled web of lies and deception that had entangled me from the beginning.

Maxwell had always been a part of this world, one I never really comprehended. I had imagined, though, that Marcus could be kept out of it. I had believed I could save myself and him. But now, looking at the papers in my hands, I saw I had never been in control.

As I let the papers drop from my hands, tears clouded my vision. Being part of their world had never been my desire. But in trying to protect Marcus, I had just sealed my fate and his.

My heart pounding in my chest, I stood before the mirror. The image looking back at me was a woman I hardly knew, someone caught in the web of her own falsehoods. I had to see Maxwell. It was impossible to avoid any more. The truth was out, and if I didn't act on it, it would ruin everything.

Hiding, burying my anxieties, and trying to shield Marcus from reality had taken me far too long. But now, given all I had found, I had no choice but to face Maxwell. I wanted him to know. I wanted him to know the truth even if it meant losing everything.

I picked up my coat and proceeded toward the entrance, my fingers brushing against the chilly leather. Every step sent my thoughts racing. Would he take me seriously? Would he know why I had left him in the dark?

The papers in my palm appeared to get increasingly heavy as I neared his office. I had no intention. No game plan. Simply the reality. And a feeling of desperation I had never experienced before.

I knocked once, the sound crisp and conclusive. From within, Maxwell's voice called. Come inside.

I opened the door and found him standing by the window, looking every bit like the man I had previously known. But now, his back was straight and his posture rigid as though he were already getting ready for war.

"I know you're furious," I murmured, my voice quaking. You have to listen to me, but

Maxwell turned to look at me, his eyes icy. Sophia, you have had years to inform me. What could you possibly say now that would matter?

My hands shook as I held the papers out to him, and I moved forward. "This could ruin everything," I remarked, my voice faltering. You must know the reality, though.

Reaching for the papers, he rapidly scanned them with his glance. His expression darkened as he read, and I could see the rage growing behind his eyes. The man who had been my lover, my confidant, was fading away from me, and I had no idea how to return him.

"I never meant for any of this to happen," I said quietly, the words seeming like a confession. I believed I was saving Marcus. I was mistaken, though.

Maxwell's jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed. Sophia, you've been lying to me. For several years now. Have you any clue how much that has cost us?

I could hear the city's hum from my high-rise office, but it felt so far away. I felt as though I were in another planet, one where the only thing that counted was the pressure on my chest. Behind me the legal office's thick door clicked shut; I at last breathed out. "Mr. Sterling, it's good to see you," the lawyer began, his voice all business but his gaze fixed on the stiffness in my stance. I did not answer right away. The legalese, the documents on the desk, the impending fight for Marcus; it was all too much. But I could not give up. Not at this time. "I need you to assist me," I murmured, my voice strong but my hands tightly by my sides. I have to get my son back in my care. I cannot allow her deny him access to me. The room felt cramped. Every syllable that left Maxwell's mouth tightened the hold he had on me, so the walls appeared to close in with every passing instant. Breathing was impossible. Not from the air but from the truth's weight. The truth I had been avoiding for three years. Maxwell's gaze pierced me; his jaw was tight with anger. "You've kept this from me for three years," he cried, his voice barely controlled and his words cutting like a knife. Sophia, I merit the truth. My voice was parched, my hands shaking as I attempted to find the words to clarify something I was not prepared to discuss. Something that would alter all. "I... I didn't know how to tell you," I mumbled, the words coming out fractured. "I assumed you wouldn't be interested to know. That it would... destroy everything. Maxwell's look became steely, his face changing from bewilderment to rage. You believe I wouldn't like to know? Though his voice was quiet, the rage in it was clear. "You believe I wouldn't have

  • Fallen for the Billionaire Doctor CEO Boss   The Return of the Ghost

I was in the middle of checking a patient's vital signs when I heard it: voices rising in the hallway, an unmistakable buzz of activity. My heart stuttered in my chest. I couldn't help but think that someone or something was about to enter through the door. Then he did. Maxwell Sterling, a man I thought I had forgotten, waited at the entrance. Tall, commanding, the sort of presence that could halt a room in its tracks. His brown hair was a little unkempt, as though today he had not cared about perfection. His piercing blue eyes fixed on mine, and for a brief instant, time itself appeared to stop. His gaze remained steady as he took a hesitant step forward, his tailored suit barely making a sound on the hospital floor. I could not look away or breathe. The years between us vanished as though we were back at that time. But no, I wasn't prepared for this. Not now, not in this manner. My pulse raced in my ears, my feet unexpectedly anchored to the location, my body trapped in the exac
