KATHY

"Katherine" Iris said, "you look tired"

"Iris" I said keeping my voice flat, devoid of any emotions. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to visit Nana. Is that suddenly a crime?" She asked sweetly, tilting her head. "Although judging by the state of you, I would say you're the one who's been up to something interesting"

And the picture Daniel showed me that morning flashed in my head and it hit me.

My stomach dropped.

Iris had been the one who drugged me and took that photo of me and Viktor at the 11:11 club.

I still didn't know where Nana was because she didn't come out at the sound of voices.

"I heard about your boyfriend... Daniel was it?" She said, a cunning smile appearing on her lips. "Such a shame though isn't it. Men can't just leave their dicks in their pants"

I knew exactly what she was doing. But I wasn't going to let her get in my head, not today.

"Although I heard you've already moved on so quickly" she continued, her smile widening.

"And how would you know anything about me moving on?" I asked.

"Oh Kathy"

"Don't call me that"

"You don't have to tell me anything Kathy" she continued ignoring what I had just said. "It's interesting to know that today you're crying over Daniel and tomorrow you're in another man's arms. Daniel looked so heartbroken when he saw the picture" she laughed so maniacally that it bothered me.

"So you poisoned me?"

"I wouldn't say "poisoned" sweetheart. Just a little birthday gift to take the edge off" she said sweetly.

Ugh God.

She was already irritating me and I wanted her out of the house.

"I just love how everything always comes easy for you Kathy. Nana's favourite. Good grades. The boyfriends who actually treated you well. A nice job and a nice car" she tilted her head slightly, "must be so nice"

"Don't"

"Don't what? Point out the obvious?"

I froze for a few seconds. Still shocked that she was still doing this.

We were adults already, yet here she was acting like an immature child. But if she wanted to be petty, I would give her exactly that.

"You want to talk about easy?" I said."Let's talk about the truth first Iris. Let's talk about Marcus"

Her face faltered for just a second.

"I was 16 and you were 18, we were best friends" I said. "I was finally able to come out of my shell and be with someone new when you basically did that every week. I was spending less time with you and more with him and what did you do Iris?"

She scoffed folding her hands together.

"You slept with my boyfriend, on purpose. After lying to him that my parents died because of me" I answered for her. "You just couldn't stand me being happy"

"That was years ago" she tried defending herself.

"And years later you're still that jealous kid who couldn't do much for her life and blames other people for it"

Iris's jaw tightened. The sweetness in her voice dropped completely.

"You don't know what it's like" she snapped. "Growing up in an orphanage. Growing up without a father and the only time anyone even bothered to look for me was when he had died. Nana looked after you like you were made of glass. You were the golden child while I got whatever was left over"

"None of that is my fault" I yelled.

"Nothing is ever your fault Katherine. Funny how that always works out for you" she smiled bitterly.

"I'm done with you Iris" I said, and I meant every word. "I'm done feeling sorry for you. I'm done making excuses for you. For the things you did because you had it harder. But just so you know Iris, I suffered too, we both suffered, just in different ways and instead of dealing with it together like we always would, you decided to spend 16 years tormenting my life for things I had no control of"

"Control?" She laughed, "your parents are dead because of you"

And that was the last straw. The last restraint I had left in me.

Before she could say anything else, I struck her accross her face.

I heard footsteps behind me, probably Nana but I was too blinded by anger to look back. Iris held onto my shirt like she was about to fight me.

"Iris" Nana called out sternly but none of us listened to her.

Suddenly Iris was on the floor and I was above her, hitting and striking her while she tried to grab my hair.

I was physically stronger than her because of the nature of my job. She tried severally to land blows but none of them touched me.

Nana was in the background yelling out both of our names and begging us to stop. I tried to stop severally but Iris kept bringing me down. She was clearly asking for it.

I didn't like petty fights like this. In fact I hated fighting except it was with a criminal. And the last time I got into a fight like this was 8 years ago when she had accused me of killing my parents.

She just had a way of getting under my skin and I preferred to ignore her but not today. She was in the house she was banned from by Nana.

She had no right coming in here and accusing me of things like that.

All I've been doing was looking for my parent's killers so she had no right.

"GIRLS" Nana's voice cracked and we both stopped for a moment to catch our breaths but something felt off.

I looked back only to see Nana holding her chest with one hand, her face red.

My heart stopped.

I stood up from Iris immediately and ran towards her.

Her face twisted in pain and her phone dropped to the ground. She swayed. Then collapsed.

I ran faster, barely catching her before her body hit he ground.

"Call 911" I yelled.

  • Falling For The Mafia   51: Don’t Leave Me

KATHYI couldn't stop thinking about Daniel.Every time I remembered his words, my stomach twisted. The nerve of that man. How he found out everything was just suspicious.I could still hear his voice.'If you don't do what I want, I'll tell Viktor the truth'I had no idea what he wanted yet, and that scared me.But there was something else that scared me even more.Viktor was beginning to lose trust in me.I could see it in the way he looked at me.The questions. The silence. The way he watched me whenever I received a phone call. But none of that even mattered anymore. I would be leaving soon and my only prayer was for Viktor not to find out anything until I leave. And then there was Harris. He was moving against Viktor without telling me.He was sending me information, asking for things, and somehow knowing details I hadn't reported. It was becoming harder to tell what Harris wanted from me.But Harris was acting more suspicious than anyone else.I was beginning to not trust Harris

  • Falling For The Mafia   50: The Truth

VIKTORThe last few days had been exhausting.Too much had happened.Anton was dead. The shipment had been compromised.Someone inside my organization had betrayed me.Katherine had been acting differently, but why wouldn't she, when I had blamed her for the leak. And then Daniel appeared at my mansion. And somehow, all of it felt connected and I didn't know what to believe.I sat behind my desk, staring at the reports in front of me.I had read them three times.Nothing made sense. The evidence against Katherine was growing. But so were the questions around it.She was hiding something.I knew that.I had known it for a while. But what exactly was she hiding? And why did I still find myself wanting to believe her?I hated that question.I hated it because I already knew the answer.I cared about her.More than I should. That was the problem.I pushed the reports aside and stood.I needed answers and the only way to get them was to ask her... only if she was willing to tell the truth.

  • Falling For The Mafia   49: Revenge

KATHYJust when I thought things couldn't get worse. It was late afternoon when I left the mansion to meet Gabriella.Viktor had allowed me to go only because two guards were coming with me.I didn't complain. After everything that had happened, I wasn't going to argue about security. When I got back, I went straight to my room.I had barely closed the door when my phone buzzed.Unknown number.I frowned and opened the message.'We need to talk'I stared at it.Who was this?Another message came.'Now'I typed back.'Who is this?'The reply came almost immediately.'You know who''No I don't' I typed back.'Daniel'My stomach dropped.Daniel.I stared at the screen. Why was he contacting me?I hadn't spoken to him properly in weeks.I quickly typed.'What do you want?'His response came.'Meet me outside'I walked to the window and looked down.Nothing.I moved the curtain slightly. Then I saw him.Daniel was standing near the side gate.My heart started beating faster. What was he do

  • Falling For The Mafia   48: One Week

KATHYThe next morning, Harris sent me another message.Honestly, I was beginning to get tired of it... and this investigation.I stared at my phone for a few seconds before opening it.There were several files attached.Photos.Documents.A police report. And one name appeared repeatedly.Anton.I sat on the edge of my bed and opened the first document.According to the report, Anton had been connected to Viktor for years.Financial transactions, meetings, phone records. There were even photographs of Anton meeting Viktor outside different locations.I frowned. This was supposed to prove Viktor had been involved in Anton's murder.I opened another file. There were records showing money transferred between one of Viktor's companies and an account connected to Anton. My eyebrows lifted. This was serious. If everything was real, it could connect Viktor directly to Anton. But something bothered me.I went through the files again. The evidence was almost too perfect, every piece connected

  • Falling For The Mafia   47: In Danger

KATHYI couldn't sleep at night.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Viktor standing in front of me.Angry.Cold.And then I remembered the look on his face when he realized I was afraid of him. That hurt more than I wanted to admit.I turned onto my side and pulled the blanket over my head. What was I supposed to do now?If I told Viktor the truth, I would lose everything. My job.My investigation. And probably my life. But if I kept lying, he would eventually find out everything on his own.And then I wouldn't even get the chance to explain.A knock sounded on my door.I sat up quickly."Who is it?""It's me."Viktor.My heart dropped.I stared at the door for a few seconds before getting up and opening it.He stood there in a black shirt, his expression unreadable. He didn't say anything.Neither did I.Finally, he looked past me."Get dressed."I frowned. "Why?""You're going downstairs.""I can walk downstairs by myself."His eyes met mine."I know."There was something different

  • Falling For The Mafia   46: The Mafia Lord

VIKTOR The investigation had taken most of the night. By morning, we had something. I wasn't sure if it was good news. A video clip. Kathy was in it. She was standing near my office. It wasn't unusual. She lived in my house. She had every reason to walk past my office. But the timing was wrong. There was also a record of her movements around the house on the same night information about the shipment had been accessed. Again, nothing directly proved she had done anything. But there was enough to make people suspicious. Romanov stood across from my desk, holding the photograph. "She's hiding something." I looked at him. "I know." His eyebrows lifted. "You know?" "I know she's hiding something." "But you still don't think she had anything to do with the leak?" "No." He placed the photograph on my desk. "You're protecting her." I didn't answer. Because maybe I was. Romanov wasn't the only one who noticed. By breakfast, the atmosphere
