KATHY

When the car came to a stop I looked out the window then froze.

My house.

My actual house?

A chill ran down my spine immediately.

How did he know where I and Nana lived?

I looked at him and a small smile creeped up his lips. He knew what I was about to ask.

I decided to brush it off with the other things about him that I didn't have the energy to examine yet.

He finally let go off my waist as if telling me it was time to go.

I awkwardly climbed out of the car and the moment I got out, the car pulled away. I looked around to make sure nobody was watching. Before going into the house.

I tried hard not to think about everything that happened last night, not like I could remember much. But fact that I spent it at a Mafia boss's pent house.

What the hell was I thinking?

This wasn't how my life was supposed to be going... at all.

I entered the house as quietly as I could so I wouldn't wake Nana, but unfortunately she was already awake. She was drinking some herbal tea in the kitchen, both hands wrapped around the cup.

"Where were you last night?" She asked catching me off guard.

I nearly tripped and fall face flat to the ground.

"Good morning to you too, Nana" I said nervously.

"Katherine" she called out.

She barely uses my full name except it meant business. I was not going to get out of this one scot-free, that I already knew.

"I stayed with a friend" I said.

Technically that wasn't a lie, but it wasn't the truth either.

'this so called friend is a Mafia boss. One you're trying to catch' my brain reminded me immediately.

Nana wasn't convinced at all but thankfully she let it go... for now.

I showered quickly and dressed up in my uniform. I completely slipped breakfast and made it to the precint just in time.

Getting to work early felt like a personal victory to me given the last 48 hours of my life.

But that victory didn't last.

"Bishop, Harris wants to see you" officer Reeves said.

Great!

Just great!

I hadn't even taken my seat yet or had a coffee. My head was banging from yesterday.

Now that I think about it, what exactly was in that drink? I couldn't remember everything completely.

I made my way upstairs and entered into his office.

"Close the door" he said.

I closed it. Sat accross from him and did my best impression of a detective who had not just spent last night drugged, in a Mafia boss's bed with zero memory of what had happened.

I don't know whether to believe Viktor or not. I wouldn't sleep with someone like him.

A criminal.

"Katherine" commissioner Harris pulled me out of my thoughts.

"What are you doing here?" He asked.

I blinked.

What did he mean? I work here.

"Working...?" I said, unsure of what was happening.

"No" he waved his hand.

"I'm sorry sir..."

"Did you read the whole file given to you yesterday?" He asked with concern.

Oh shit!

I had completely forgotten about that. I was supposed to study Viktor at the bar and go back home to read the remainder of the file.

"You are supposed to be off for 3 months" he said, folding his hands.

" I... i don't understand sir"

" Katherine you're not going to catch Viktor by sitting behind a desk" he sighed.

That was true.

"3 months Katherine. We need you inside" he continued.

Inside.

A memory of last night hit me immediately, Viktor's hand inside my...

Heat crept up my neck and I quickly shrugged it down.

No.

Absolutely not.

Focus Katherine. Focus.

"We need access" Commissioner Harris's voice echoed back into my head.

"Access to what?" I asked stupidly.

My mind was not in it's right state.

"Everything" Commissioner Harris barked, making me flinch in the chair. "His business, his people, his home"

When he was done barking orders at me, I finally stood up, ready to leave. As soon as I opened the door he spoke again.

"Katherine"

"Sir"

"I'll need you to check in at the precint once a week for weekly reports" he said, "and Katherine... don't let me down"

"Yes sir" I nodded before leaving his office.

The only good thing about this whole thing was that I would get enough time to rest and spend some time with Nana before figuring out how to infiltrate his "home".

Flashes of the penthouse came to my mind. It looked too... cold.

Which meant the penthouse wasn't his home.

Was it just a place where he slept with girls? Not like any of that matters.

I sat on my desk, packing some of my stuff, then I took the file out of my work bag to read through it.

While I was looking through the file it stated that he had a niece. Anya Svyatoslav. She was just 8 years old.

I got into my car and sat in it longer than I should have, trying to figure out how I would get into his house.

A maid? A personal assistant? A cook?

No.

None of that would work for me.

I decided to enjoy the rest of the day with Nana so I drove back to the house.

The moment I got home, something felt off. There was a beat down car parked outside and it wasn't one I recognised.

Who would have visited? No one besides Gabby visited and that wasn't her car.

I came out of the car and brought out my gun, held it with both hands and turned off the safety switch. Slowly, I walked into the apartment and a whiff of strong cologne hit my nose.

"Nana?" I called out but I got no replies back.

I walked through the living room and into the kitchen but no one was there.

"Miss me?" A voice said from behind me and I whipped around with my gun pointing towards the intruder.

"What are you doing here, Iris?"

KATHY 3 days later we were back in the US. I was very glad to be back. Being attacked wasn't part of the vacation specifications and I didn't like that very much even though I had caught the rat. Viktor had killed him without even thinking twice. Would he do the same to me when he finds out who I really am? I had better start making escape plans just in case. The drive back to the mansion somehow felt heavenly. Three cars, Viktor and Romanov in one, Natalia and Anya in the other and I in the last car. It was peaceful. I looked at my arm which had healed enough that I no longer needed a bandage, though the scar was still there. I would have to wear long sleeve shirts to visit Nana. It would be hard to explained that my life was at risk at my employer's home. The car I was in finally came to a stop last. Anya and Natalia had already gone inside while I walked behind Viktor who was many steps away from me. The moment I stepped on the foyer, I saw Zuri. "Kathy" he gre

  • Falling For The Mafia   28: A Rat

KATHY"Call the doctor."Viktor's voice was calm, but everyone moved immediately.Romanov gave a short nod before disappearing down the hallway.I looked down at my arm. The adrenaline had worn off, and the burning pain was becoming harder to ignore. Blood had soaked through my sleeve, staining my shirt.About 15 minutes later, the doctor arrived. He cleaned the wound, stitched the cut, and wrapped my forearm in a neat white bandage."It isn't deep," he said. "You'll be sore for a few days, but you'll be fine. I'll give you some painkillers"As soon as he finished, Viktor looked at me."Go get your things."I frowned."My things?""We're leaving."I stood up to leave but Anya wouldn't let go. So we both went into my room together and I packed my bags. I didn't leave anything behind. We also went to Anya's room and picked some of her clothes and stuffed toys inside her school bag and we both went downstairs.Viktor took one look at my bag and back at my face.I shrugged. There was no w

  • Falling For The Mafia   27: Under Attack

KATHYI knew something was wrong the moment Viktor said we were leaving the country. "A vacation" was what he called it. Although the few days I had been here had been beautiful so far, something just didn't feel right. I could feel it. I wish I could just know what was happening. But my best guess was that the Mafia was under attach. The security around Viktor had doubled since we'd arrived. Romanov was constantly on the phone. Guards rotated shifts more frequently than before, and Viktor himself rarely relaxed, no matter how calm he appeared.Which made it all the more reason to believe that they were having some kind of fight. Would running away for a week really protect us? That afternoon, I wandered through one of the quiet hallways, hoping to clear my head, because something just kept nagging at me.I heard voices through a half-open door."...I've told you before."It was Viktor's voice.I stopped involuntarily.I wasn't trying to eavesdrop or anything.I had every intent

  • Falling For The Mafia   26: Dangerous Asset

VIKTOR I hadn't stopped thinking about yesterday. It was becoming a problem. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Katherine diving into the pool without a hint of hesitation. The moment she came back out of the water in her swim suit, I knew all hope were lost for me. I wanted her. Beautiful. Dangerously beautiful. I let out a quiet sigh and rubbed a hand over my face. I had meetings to think about. A war brewing back in New York. Shipments that needed rerouting. Enemies who wanted my head. Instead... I was thinking about Katherine. Pathetic. I left my room and walked down the hallway toward hers. Just as I was about to knock, I heard laughter. Not just laughter. Her laughter. "...Gabby, stop!" she giggled through the phone. "No, I'm serious!" She laughed again. "I am not blushing!" A smile threatened to form on my lips. It disappeared the moment I realized I was smiling because of a woman talking on the phone. Ridiculous. I knocked o

KATHYI had never been on a private plane before. The moment I stepped into Viktor’s private plane I immediately realized we lived in twice completely different worlds. The cabin looked more like a living room in a 5 star hotel than an airplane. The whole seats where made of black leather. And everything else looked just as expensive.I sat on one of the seats at the back, pretending like this was all normal to me but it wasn’t.Anya had no problem at all though. She bounced on the seat beside me like she had been doing that all her life, which I was sure she was.She looked at me smiling then she eagerly grabbed my hand and started showing me around while Viktor discussed something with Romanov near the front area.I watched them for all of two seconds before turning my attention back to Anya. I already knew something was wrong the moment he said we were going on vacation. I just didn't know what.Nana wasn’t happy about me leaving the country when I told her I wouldn’t be around for

KATHY"You're smiling."Gabby narrowed her eyes at me as we stepped out of the boutique, shopping bags hanging from both our wrists."I'm not""You've been smiling for the last five minutes.""I have not"She folded her arms."You're thinking about a certain grumpy Mr. Expensive.""I absolutely am not."She gave me a look that screamed liar.I chuckled lightly trying to get her to stop talking but before she could tease me again, I casually glanced at the reflection in a nearby shop window. There they were. Two men.One pretending to study a display of watches. The other scrolling through his phone.Neither of them was interested in shopping. They were interested in me, it was too easy to tell.I almost laughed."What?" Gabriella asked."Nothing."I kept walking."Just... don't look behind you."She immediately tried to look behind her.I grabbed her arm."I literally just told you not to."Her eyes widened."Someone's following us?""Two someones.""Oh my God.""Relax.""They could b

KATHYI opened my eyes groggily, for a moment I had no idea where I was.I was in a bed that was not mine and that was the first problem. The second problem was that the sheets were too expensive.
