Wren pov

The week blurred into a whirlwind of tape rolls, skate sharpenings, and learning which players preferred their sticks at what lie. I kept my head down like Eleanor had warned, but the cheer squad’s glares followed me everywhere. Brooke especially. Still, the work felt right—ice-cold air in my lungs, the crack of pucks, the rhythm of a team locking in for battle. And Rhett… he was everywhere. Not talking much, but watching. Those ice-blue eyes tracked me during practices, a half-smile appearing whenever I snapped back at a cocky freshman or hauled equipment twice my size.

By game night, the Fieldhouse was electric. First game of the season. Sellout crowd. Banners everywhere with Rhett’s number and face. My stomach hadn’t stopped flipping since I’d arrived early to set up the bench—water bottles perfect, towels stacked, tablets charged for injury logs. The Kane family sat in the booster box above, watching. I could feel their expectations pressing down like the cold air itself.

Stay focused. No distractions.

But Rhett made that impossible. During warm-ups he’d skated past the bench, tapping his stick against the boards right in front of me. “Keep that fire ready, Matthews,” he’d said, voice low enough that only I heard. Then he was gone, all power and grace on the ice.

The game exploded from the opening face-off. State versus their rival, Ridgewood. Hits rattled the boards. The crowd roared like thunder. I paced behind the bench, logging shifts, handing out water, trying not to stare at number 19—Rhett—dominating the ice. He was everywhere: winning puck battles, threading perfect passes, throwing checks that left opponents dazed. He played like a man possessed, faster and meaner than the polished clips I’d seen online. Something about it felt raw tonight, like he was proving something.

By the third period we were tied 2-2. Tension coiled in my chest so tight I could barely breathe. The coach barked orders. Players slammed onto the bench, sweat flying. I wiped down a visor for one of the defensemen, heart hammering with every shift.

Then it happened.

Rhett stole the puck in neutral ice, deked one defender, and barreled toward the net. The arena held its breath. He wound up—a blistering wrist shot that beat the goalie clean. The lamp lit. The crowd erupted.

Final score: State 3, Ridgewood 2.

Pandemonium. Horn blaring. Teammates piling on Rhett at center ice. I stood frozen at the bench, grinning so wide my cheeks hurt, adrenaline flooding my veins like I’d scored it myself. This was why I loved it—the energy, the fight, the release, the suspense For a second, the scholarship pressure, the cheer squad drama, the heavy Kane expectations all faded.

Then Rhett broke from the celebration. He skated straight for the bench, helmet off, dark hair sweaty and wild, eyes locked on me with an intensity that stole whatever breath I had left. The crowd noise dulled to a roar in my ears. What was he—

He didn’t slow down. One powerful stride and he vaulted the boards in a move that should’ve been impossible in full gear. Strong hands cupped my face, cold from the ice but burning hot with adrenaline. His ice-blue eyes blazed—wild, victorious, something deeper flickering underneath.

“Wren,” he growled, voice rough.

Then he kissed me.

Right there, in front of the entire arena, the team, the coaches, the screaming fans, his parents . His lips crashed into mine, urgent and fierce, tasting like salt and triumph and something electric that short-circuited my brain. One of his hands slid to the back of my neck, pulling me closer. I didn't know what to do. The world narrowed to the heat of his mouth, the scrape of his stubble, the thunder of my pulse drowning out everything else. For a heartbeat I kissed him back—shocked, exhilarated, completely lost.

He pulled away just enough to rest his forehead against mine, breathing hard. “Couldn’t wait anymore,” he said, that rough edge in his voice sending sparks down my spine. The half-smile was back, sharper now, like he’d won more than just the game, like he just won a lottery.

The arena lost its mind. Cheers, whistles, phones flashing. I caught a glimpse of Brooke’s furious face near the glass before security and teammates swarmed. Rhett let me go slowly, like he didn’t want to, then let the celebration pull him back toward the ice for the handshake line. But his eyes found mine again across the chaos.

I stood there, fingers pressed to my tingling lips, legs shaky. The team manager. The scholarship girl. Kissed by the captain in front of everyone. My face burned hotter than the arena lights. Part of me wanted to melt into the rubber mats. Another part felt alive in a way I’d never experienced.

What just happened?

  • Falling For The Wrong Kane   Chapter 41

Jonah’s POV The drive to the Whitworth house was quiet for the first few minutes. Brooke sat beside me, scrolling through messages on her phone while I stared through the windshield, going over everything I had discovered in the Whitworth system.I had spent the previous night studying their finances, and the more I understood, the clearer the weakness became. Whitworth wasn't completely failing, but the company was carrying more debt than it could comfortably manage, and several of its major investments were performing badly. Their cash flow depended heavily on a few financing arrangements that could become a problem if investors started losing confidence.I had already made sure that would happen, and I had simply needed the right opportunity to take advantage of it.“Dad said the meeting shouldn't take too long.” Brooke said, putting her phone into her handbag. “He wants to discuss the repairs first, then there's something else he wants to talk to you about.” She added.“What

Jonah’s POV I watched Wren disappear into the storage room with the remaining supplies, and for a moment, I considered following her.Brooke was still beside me, her arm linked through mine, so I forced myself to look at her instead.“You're unusually quiet, is something wrong?” she said as we walked away from the rink. “Nothing is wrong. I was just thinking about the meeting with your father.” I looked away from her with a deep sigh. “He was actually impressed that you stepped in.” Brooke nodded and rested her head briefly against my shoulder. “I didn't do anything special.” I scoffed. “That's one of the things I like about you. You are so generous and treat poor people kindly.” She smiled.I returned the smile, but my mind wasn't on her. It was Wren walking away from me.I knew why she had done it. The moment Brooke appeared, Wren had remembered exactly where she stood in my life, and I couldn't blame her for protecting herself. The problem was that I didn't want her to.I spe

  • Falling For The Wrong Kane   Chapter 39

Wren's POV I woke up the next morning still thinking about the night before. The memory of Rhett catching me in the rain came back first, followed by the kiss that had left me standing there long after I had forgotten about the rain soaking through my clothes.I reached for my phone and checked the time before getting out of bed. My roommate was already awake and watching me from across the room.“You're smiling,” she said.“I just woke up.” I rolled my eyes pretending not to understand what she was saying. “Oh come on, don't be like that. I know something definitely happened. You seem different this morning, like a different type of glow.” She jumped over to my bed and I knew for a fact she's not going to let the matter go.“What do you want me to say?” I grabbed my towel from the chair. “I don't know, you tell me. You are the one who experienced something life changing.” She teased me. “Nothing special, I just went out with Rhett after dinner.” I gave her a brief explanation cau

  • Falling For The Wrong Kane   Chapter 38

Jonah’s POV The kiss lasted longer than I intended.I could feel Wren's hands against my shoulders as the rain soaked through both of us, and I tightened my arms around her waist. There was no thought of Brooke, my family, the engagement, or the consequences waiting for us once the night ended. There was only Wren standing in front of me and the way she had kissed me back without hesitation. When we finally pulled apart, she kept her hands on my shoulders and looked up at me. Her cheeks were flushed, and her wet hair clung to the sides of her face.“We're completely soaked,” she said, laughing softly.“You think?” I looked down at my shirt. She laughed again and hurried toward the car.I followed her, opened the passenger door, and waited for her to climb inside before getting behind the wheel. The moment I started the engine, I turned the heat all the way up.“Your car is going to smell like wet clothes.” Wren rubbed her arms. “My car will survive.” I smiled at her. “You're no

Wren's POV The ice cream shop was almost empty when we arrived, which was probably the only reason I agreed to let Rhett drag me inside at that hour.He ordered two large cups before I could decide what I wanted.“You didn't even ask me what flavor I wanted.” I complained as we sat down.“I know you like chocolate.” He chuckled.“How do you know that?” I looked at him.“You have ordered chocolate ice cream every time we have been around food together.” He said, and I couldn't help but wonder if he had been stalking me.“That doesn't mean I want it tonight.” I frowned. “Then you can give it back.” He pushed the cup toward me. “I'm keeping it.” I pulled it closer. “That's what I thought.” He laughed. We sat there longer than we needed to, eating ice cream and talking about things that had nothing to do with school, hockey, Brooke, or my family.I told him about some of the ridiculous things my roommate had done since we became friends, and he laughed so hard at one story that he ne

  • Falling For The Wrong Kane   Chapter 36

Jonah’s POV The awkward silence that followed my confession made me shrugg but I still could not bring myself to look away from her. I hadn't planned to say them. I hadn't even realized they were sitting that close to the surface until they came out.Wren lowered her eyes to the table, and I watched her fingers tighten slightly around the edge of her napkin. She didn't tell me she felt the same way, but she didn't tell me she didn't either.I leaned back in my chair, suddenly aware of how quiet the room had become.“I shouldn't have said that,” I murmured.“Why?” She looked up at me. “Because I don't know what you are supposed to do with it.”“And what am I supposed to do with it?” She studied my face. “I don't know.” I shut my eyes for a second. Her lips parted as if she wanted to say something, but she stopped. I couldn't look away from her.For weeks, I had been trying to convince myself that whatever I felt for her was temporary. Attraction, curiosity, and the thrill of bein
