Chapter 4

Penulis: Glass Kettle
I sat in Reuben's car as he took me to his place. Mom had insisted that I wasn't to set foot in her home at all.

Reuben rubbed my head and said comfortingly, "Don't let this get to you. Mom doesn't mean it like that."

"It's only right for her to blame me," I said calmly. My thoughts drifted to five years ago.

It was a snowy night, and Dad had been on his way home after a work meeting. I'd clamored about wanting him to buy me ravioli from a restaurant on the opposite bank. As he'd crossed the bridge to get there, he'd missed a patch of ice and slipped and fallen into the water.

His body was only recovered the following day, and he'd frozen over completely. He was as stiff as a board.

Mom had always favored Reuben over me, so this incident made her hate me to the core. From then on, she'd severed ties with me and disowned me.

I turned to look out the window at the scenery zipping past. I sighed, and my breath fogged up a small patch on the glass.

I hid in Reuben's place in the suburbs for a peaceful month. Then, one day, my peace was interrupted by a phone call from Marcus. He'd searched Jaldon for me but had failed to find me, and he sounded anxious.

I thought he was calling to beg for my forgiveness after realizing his mistakes, so I sent him my location. To my surprise, he merely said coldly, "I'm just calling to tell you that I've transferred the company shares under your name to Janae. I'll send you the agreement, so sign it."

Just then, the doorbell rang. Sure enough, I received the agreement that had been couriered to me.

"I've already announced this during a board meeting, so don't make things hard for me." Marcus hung up after that, seemingly sure that I wouldn't say no to him.

Pain shot through me, starting from my stomach, and I bolted to the bathroom to cough up mouthfuls of blood.

I endured the discomfort and pain as I threw on a coat and hurried to the company. Marcus and I had put our heart and soul into it—it was a symbol of our love.

I couldn't sit by and watch as the company I'd built from scratch turned into a tool for my stand-in to prove Marcus' love for her.

I headed to my office as the employees stared at me like I was a stranger. A wave of bitterness washed over me when I saw that. Once upon a time, this place had been my turf.

I pushed open the door to see Janae sitting inside with a wide smile. She seemed to have been waiting for me.

"You look like a stray dog now, Renee. So what if I'm a stand-in? I'm the one Marcus loves now, and you are nothing. You're not even worthy of being my stand-in now!" she said.

I stood there dazedly and looked around the familiar room, feeling like my heart was bleeding. Then, I heard Marcus' voice in the distance—he was shouting and warning me not to do anything to hurt Janae.

As I watched, Janae pushed everything on the desk onto the floor and summoned her tears out of nowhere.

Marcus shoved me aside and helped Janae up before turning to look at me with disdain. "You're truly something, Renee. How dare you come here to cause a scene! No wonder your mother hates you, and no wonder you cursed your father to death! No wonder you have nowhere to go!

"You're so ruthless and evil that anyone who gets close to you will meet a horrible end!"

I didn't even realize I was doing it, but I started laughing as I took in the situation. At the same time, tears flowed down my face.

Once upon a time, the source of my sorrow had also brought Marcus to tears. Yet now, he'd turned my pain into a blade that he stabbed me in the heart with.

In that instant, I swore to make him hurt. I would haunt him even after my death! I would make him regret everything he'd done to me!

December brought the first snow. Thick, feathery flakes drifted from the sky to form a thin layer on my gravestone.I heard footsteps in the distance. They grew louder as the visitor approached.Marcus wiped the snow off my gravestone and placed a bouquet of dark red roses before it. Then, he got on his knees before my gravestone and lowered his head without saying anything. He remained like that for such a long time that the snow piled on his shoulders instead. Finally, he spoke. "Renee, I know you don't want to see me, but let me be selfish once more. I promise this is the last time I'll be here."After another bout of silence, he sighed heavily, his warm breath forming a soft cloud in the air.I stood beside him and watched him calmly. I scrutinized the young man I'd once loved with all my heart. He pulled a dagger from his pocket and slit his wrist without hesitation. His blood spilled all over the snow, turning it crimson. It pooled at my gravestone as he collapsed before it

It was particularly quiet in the suburbs, and the villa was as dark as always.Marcus curled up in a corner of the couch—it was a habit we shared. He could no longer shed tears as he stared blankly at a wall."I can sense your existence here, Renee. Just sitting here makes me feel at ease and secure," he mumbled. Then, his gaze focused as he stared at a stuffed toy on the couch. My heart jolted. The stuffed toy was one that he and I had gotten custom-made when we'd first gotten together. It was one of a pair—one looked like him, and the other like me.We'd each taken the toy that looked like the other. At the time, he'd said that it was a way for us to curb our longing for each other. Now, it seemed it was all he would have left. The toy he held was the one that looked like me. I'd lost the one that looked like him, so I'd stolen his instead.Marcus looked at the stuffed toy, and a few tears leaked out of his dry eyes again. He rubbed the stuffed toy before pausing and pulling ou

Reuben sat beside a photo of me, his eyes red and swollen. It was clear he'd just cried. He held the list I'd left for him, and every item had been ticked off.Firstly, I wanted him to protect my company shares after my death. They were the product of my hard work, and one of the few things I'd achieved in my short life.Secondly, I wanted him to take back everything Janae had taken from me. Thirdly, I wanted him to stop Marcus from ever seeing me again. And lastly, I wanted him to live on, even if it were just for my sake. I wanted him to manage my company and care for Mom and himself. When Reuben heard footsteps, he folded the list and tucked it into his pocket. It was the only thing I'd left for him, after all."I'm too late." Marcus sounded on the verge of tears as he mumbled to himself. He looked around the empty funeral parlor. He dragged his feet as he headed to where the coffin would've been. Then, when he saw my photo, he burst into tears.Reuben didn't want to see him,

The room erupted in shock as soon as the words were out of Reuben's mouth. Then, there was a loud crash—Mom had collapsed on the floor. The wail of an ambulance siren wound around the high-rise buildings. Reuben got in with the medical personnel while the Gray family members sent off the guests and reporters.Marcus stood alone, his eyes bloodshot and wide with shock. Beside him, Janae seemed frightened by his reaction. She shook his arm and asked, "Mr. Gray, what's wrong? Don't scare me!"His eyes were unfocused, and his chest heaved violently. Then, he shook Janae off and ran to the door. She screamed and wailed behind him, but that did nothing to slow him down.Marcus hurried to the hospital, only regaining a hint of his rationality when he saw Reuben waiting in the corridor. He grabbed Reuben by the collar, his eyes red as he trembled all over. "Where's Renee?""She's dead," Reuben said calmly, unable to hide his fatigue.Marcus shook his head, breathing so rapidly that he co

My consciousness flew to the banquet hall where my engagement ceremony with Marcus was supposed to be held. There were many bigwigs from the business world gathered there. To them, the engagement ceremony was just a way to network and form connections. I'd seen too many of these events since childhood.Marcus stood in the lounge and dialed my number incessantly as he paced the room. "Answer the phone, Renee!"The unanswered call was drowned out by the sound of his mother urging him to hurry up from outside the lounge. He threw the phone onto the couch.Just then, Reuben kicked the door open. Marcus looked like he'd seen his savior and grabbed Reuben's arm. Then, he looked behind Reuben, seemingly looking for me.He asked, "Where's Renee? Why isn't she here with you? Has she gone to the banquet hall?"Reuben punched him hard, immediately drawing blood.Marcus stared at him in astonishment. Then, he scowled and snapped, "Have you lost your mind?"The dark circles underneath Reube

That was the moment my love for Marcus died, and I gave up on him. I could clearly see the man who'd once loved me more than life itself slowly walking away from me.I ripped the contract he'd mailed to me to pieces before throwing them into the trash can outside the building. I'd stopped crying, but the wind still made my face hurt as it froze my salty tear tracks.I called Reuben and told him the truth about my condition. He practically flew over to the company to pick me up and take me home.I didn't have much time left, and a letter with my last words, now in its fourth version, was becoming simpler. I stuffed it into the shirt of a stuffed toy on the couch.I didn't think there was any point in leaving a letter because no one would read it. The words I wrote would only serve to make me sadder.I listed the things I wanted Reuben to do on my behalf—he promised he would only read it after my death. The only problem was that I no longer had the strength to even hold a pen proper
