They were seated at the cafeteria, Erica and Henry, but Alfie was missing. Missing from the middle, where he sat between Erica and Henry, with his legs crossed and his blonde hair covering a part of his face.

“Switched off,” Erica says as she drops the phone from her ear with a worried sigh. She has called him so many times that it would take a day to delete the entire call log. She was tapping her legs on the floor, with her brows twisted in a knot.

Henry dropped his phone on the table with a thud, like the phone was hot and would burn his palms. “He’s not responding to his texts either.” He didn’t say it as a joke this time. His voice didn’t carry the humorous wave it normally did.

“I really do hope he’s okay,” Erica said, looking at nothing in particular.

“We should check his room,” Henry said.

“Done that. Twice. His roommates said they haven’t seen him either.”

Later that day, it was found that Alfie had locked himself up in the dresser. It wasn’t till dawn that they found him there, and he wouldn’t open the door. They called the authorities, who broke the doorknob.

ALFIE

The light in the room was dim, flowing in fettered, dissolved by the blinds and the curtains. I sat in a chair that felt too springy, in front of a man who was supposed to be my therapist, assigned to me by the school.

I had not said a word in the last two hours I’d been here. Not when he asked, “How are you doing, honey?” or when he told me I was safe. Or when he asked me to take in deep breaths, or when he whispered, “You deserve love, kindness, and peaceful existence. It is not your fault. None of it.” He said it in a convincing way, like I was supposed to believe it. Like I was taken to Riley’s house by a wicked fairy.

He would later dismiss me. “Selective mutism,” he diagnosed, and recommended to the school that I be given privacy. They didn’t call my guardians—who were my uncle and aunt—the therapist said it would only make things worse for my mental health. Especially when they found out the reason. I was grateful for that. I couldn’t imagine what they would say or how they would look at me if they ever saw that photo.

So I was given another room, where I would be allowed to stay in isolation, and would be required to meet with the therapist for a session every day. He placed his hands on my shoulders. “Remember, you don’t owe anyone any explanation. And you don’t need to say anything if you’re not ready.” I simply nodded. Then left.

I thought of Erica and Henry. I knew they would be so worried sick for me, but I didn’t know what to do, how to face them, how to explain or answer the numerous questions that they would have. I know they have seen it.

The image that was wickedly cropped, only showing me kneeling on the floor with a finger thrust into my open mouth. It was in every group, every school channel. It was the trending reaction sticker.

That image was so lewd, so shameful. It haunted me when I closed my eyes. I didn’t know how to face the world. If we could easily afford it, I would have wanted a transfer.

I didn’t know how much longer I could avoid everything, everybody, but I was willing to try, to see what the limits were.

They were training at the rink—Riley, Liam, and Richard, the three of them. They always trained together, hung out together, and yes—bullied together.

Liam passed the puck to Riley with one swift motion. Riley watched the black plastic slide over the ice and slide right past him.

They all straightened their backs, looking at Riley with eyes wide open. Never has this happened. Ever! Riley pushed his stick out of his hands the same way Thor would summon his hammer, just that Riley was pushing it away from him. It slid on the ice, making a screeching sound through the quiet hall.

“What’s wrong?” Liam’s brows furrowed. He looked angry.

Richard turned. “Oh well—” and began to skate out of the rink. “—seems like I’m not the only tired one,” he said as he made his way out.

“Don’t you think we took the whole thing too far?” Riley said. He wasn’t exactly looking at anything, just his hands on his waist with beads of sweat on his forehead.

“What are you talking about?” Liam’s voice came sharper, like what Riley was saying irritated him. His brows furrowed deeper.

“I dunno, I just wanted to scare him. The entire sex thing and posting him…” He took a breath. “I wasn’t really down with it.”

Liam looked at him for a long second, the way you’d look at snow in the middle of summer. “And since when did you start to care?” he scoffed.

“I dunno, man—”

“Get over yourself.” Liam cut him off. “Gosh! Don’t kill the whole fun.” He waved him off, then he skated in one stride, picked up Riley’s stick, and placed it back in his hands. “Remember, you have a championship to bring home.” He gave him a slight nod.

Riley took the stick, holding it like a dead fish in his hands, before saying, “I should check up on him.”

  • Falling for my Bully    Fear and attraction

Riley was almost completely nude. His chest was bare and wet. His biceps flexed with the slightest of motion. His long legs were uncovered. The only clothing he had on was a scanty boxer that gripped his muscular frame so clearly, you could outline the entire length and width of his dick. I felt the bones in my legs transform into a soft gel, wobbly and shaking me unstable. I needed something to hold onto for support.“I can’t reach my back—” He bent his hands to his back to show me that they couldn’t reach. “Can you help me apply lotion there?”No. what the fuck. “huh?” I thought I had said no only in my mind, he was approaching me now. “I might have been applying it wrongly the whole time. As my tutor, don’t you think it’s your duty to show me how it’s done?” He was standing too close to me that I could feel his breath fall on my hair.I couldn’t wish away the stiffening of my dick, or the fast pace with which my heart was now beating. I took the lotion from him with a frown on my

  • Falling for my Bully    The perfect man

Erica’s excitement could reverse an eclipse, returning the light to a dark world. She had been invited into the Young Creators Cohort. That was the good news she had for us, and indeed, it was great. I was smiling from ear to ear, hoping I was smiling right—the correct way people smiled. I wasn’t sure if they had specific steps to smile, or if I could buy a book to learn how to make one properly.Henry pulled Erica in for a hug the way he always did, throwing his arms lazily around you and suffocating you at the same time. She pushed him almost immediately after a brief hug.“Okay, that’s enough,” she breathed out and in. “I’ll need some personal space, okay?” She said it in a serious tone but was still sarcastic, because Henry only moved in closer and continued trying to pull her in for a hug despite her protest and complaint about smudging her makeup. I was laughing hysterically, just as Henry was laughing too.I loved them. I really do.I wish I could tell them about Riley—tell th

  • Falling for my Bully    first lesson: stay put

Riley's room felt bigger than it was before that night, it was so spacious and ridiculously furnished, you wouldn't believe it belonged to a student. I tried to not think of that night, i tried to quench, with my saliva, the burning rage that was rising up my throat when I remembered that night. It was rage and fear, mixed so finely together I couldn't tell which was more. Rage because it happened, and fear that he could do it again, and I could do absolutely nothing about it. So I sat with my legs tightened to one another, and my hands clasped, as if creating an armor against him. He sat across me, with a rugged thud. I feared the chair would collaps, even the table that seperated us shook. Just 3 hours. You can do this Alfie, you can. I took in a deep breath, like Avatar the last air bender, I opened my eyes with a new resolve, determined, brisk. I imagined my eyes shine blue. “from your transcript, i found that the courses you performed lowest at were courses that had to deal w

  • Falling for my Bully    How wet dreams feel

Erica was wearing the brightest shade of yellow I had ever seen. It was so bright that I wondered if it glowed in the dark, because even her mood was electricity.“How… do… I look?” she squealed as she tossed her long brown braids to the side. Honestly, she looked like a princess. Always looked like one, just that today she was more intentional about it.“Tu es très belle, mademoiselle,” Henry said in an exaggerated deep voice, with his hands making gestures like in theater.“I know right,” she said, and then her expression changed very quickly to a serious one. “Here—” she placed her phone in my hand, then she picked up her glass of orange drink to take a sip, “—make it look unaware,” she said. I took a picture of her, and she collected her phone back and took a sip from the drink.“Urghhhh,” she exclaimed. “Tastes like dust,” she said while checking out the photo.Someone walked up to our table, a boy who was so short I would have missed him if he didn’t call my name so loud with a

  • Falling for my Bully    The bully's choice

AlfieI wasn’t sure how many days had passed, maybe two or three. I had received no calls, neither had I looked at a screen—not my phone’s or a television’s. I didn’t know what made me feel so relevant, but for some odd reason, I felt that I would appear on the news.I had been keeping up with my therapy sessions and had allowed visitors—the only ones I know, Henry and Erica. They didn’t ask me how it happened, or when it happened. They just came, with different brands of pineapple juice. I was grateful. I wanted to say thank you. But it felt like there was an inflated bulb in my throat, so nothing came out when I opened my mouth to speak. I felt guilty for not speaking, and I was too aware of the fact that they were noticing my state, and it made it even harder to speak, no matter how hard I tried.I had a dream where the entire school was empty, and I searched every block looking for Erica and Henry. That afternoon when they came, with
