In all of her 17 years of existence, Amanda had never felt this sad and dejected. The news of Leslie's mum's death hit them hard. They were currently in her house, trying to console her which proved to be a difficult task considering the circumstances surrounding her death.
It had been a secret even for Emily and Amanda as none of them knew that Leslie's mother had been battling with breast cancer all her life. Leslie hid it so well that none of them knew anything not until she died."It's okay Les, please. She wouldn't want to see you like this." Amanda said."I don't understand, she was fine about a week ago. Then all of a sudden, she slumpe right in my arms. I had to dial 911, before calling my dad who was frantic the whole journey home. I'm so confused right now." Leslie sobbed.Emily and Amanda comforted her as best as they could but Leslie was inconsolable as she sobbed harder. About an hour later, her father walked in wearing a grim expression. The girls could tell that he was trying to hold his pain in but he was losing the battle."Thank you for coming." he croaked before making his way upstairs. For the rest of the day, Emily and Amanda stayed with Leslie trying to comfort her as best as they could. The next day, being a school day, they had to leave but promised to come back at the close of school. In school, the duo informed the teachers about what happened and took permission on her behalf to be absent pending the time she would be able to get back. "We need to keep an eye on her locker." Emily said as they left the principal's office."True, I don't trust Ian and his friends not to drop something as sensitive as this. We'll go during break. Right now, we need to head over to class. It's starting in like five minutes." Amanda said. They got to the class soon and luckily for them, the teacher hadn't arrived yet. They settled in just as the teacher walked in. "Do we have any assignments for this class?" Emily asked."None that I know of. The only pending project is the one for Mr Graham and its submission deadline is still far." Amanda said."Phew, Lord knows that I'm not in the mood to do any assignment." Emily said.Few minutes later, the teacher arrived followed closely by Parker. During the whole episode about Leslie's mum's death, Amanda had completely forgotten all about him. She could see that he looked much better, even healthier than the last time she saw him. His wounds were gone and there was a more relaxed mood in his appearance. He sat down at his usual seat, at the back of the class. Amanda felt his eyes on him but she vowed not to look back to confirm this."He's looking." Emily smiled."Oh gosh, that's so creepy. I really don't understand why he does that." Amanda said."Probably because he has the hots for you and can't resist your charms." she whistled."Charm? What charm? Girl you know I stay on my own most of the time since I'm a constant victim of bullying but if Parker is thinking I'm putting on a charm because of him, he must be a fool. I detest him like the dirt on my shoes." Amanda said, scribbling furiously."Wow, girl I never knew you had a sharp mouth. It's good to hear that for a change." Emily laughed. All eyes turned to them and Amanda felt ashamed meanwhile, Emily was feeling nothing of sort. The teacher turned at that moment, giving her the stink eye."Is anything funny Emily?" she asked."No ma'am, nothing. I'm sorry." she said, trying so hard to control her laughter. The teacher turned back to the board, once again scribbling on it. Amanda gave Emily a stern look, silently warning her not to get them in trouble again. After class ended and the teacher left, the duo made their way to the cafeteria to grab a quick lunch before heading over to Leslie's locker to pack her stuff. On their way, Ian and his friends blocked the door leading into the cafeteria. Amanda reverted to herself, fearing that the worse would happen.Emily wasn't fazed by this; she simply walked on with Amanda in tow. They got to the door soon but Ian refused to move away."I heard your friend lost her mum. Oh, how tragic. Maybe she'll be the next to go." he cackled. His friends joined in and Amanda couldn't believe they could make a joke out of something as sensitive as this. She was burning with anger, her hands shook as she wished desperately to punch the smirk off his face. Emily smiled but Amanda could tell that it wasn't a pleasant smile, it was a smile of something tragic yet to come."How dare you?"Amanda blurted, quite calmly. She didn't know where the courage came from but she enjoyed the look of shock on their faces. Emily smiled, this time happy that her friend wasn't going to be a pushover like the other times.Ian recovered from his shock soon as he slowly made his way towards where she stood. Amanda took a step back, fearing that he would hit her. Emily stood in the way, putting herself between him and her friend."Leave it Em, I've got this." Amanda. saidEmily nodded, leaving the way. Ian came forward with a mad gleam in his eyes. "Touch her and you'll have me to contend with." a voice said.Parker moved into view, his tall frame filling the whole place. Amanda couldn't believe her eyes, the same person who seemed to hate her was the same person standing up for her. Emily smiled, hooting."Yo man! I see you've suddenly grown hot for the girl." Ian said, taking a step back."You and your friends, get lost." Parker said.Without another minute, they left. Amanda stared at Parker and within those few minutes, there seemed to be an unspoken appreciation."Thank you." Amanda said."Don't mention it." Parker said before taking his leave.Amanda and Emily made their way into the cafeteria, each with their own thoughts as they tried to get a grip on what just happened. Taking their seats, they ate silently, each filled with her own thoughts."Are we just going to stay silent and not talk about what just happened?" Emily asked, sipping her milkshake.Amanda sighed, she knew her friend wouldn't allow the issue to go just like that. She had no other option but to indulge her if she didn't want a fight."I'm confused. One minute he's a sweet, charming boy the next, he's a beast whom I desperately want to devour." Amanda said."A delectable handsome beast you mean." Emily laughed."Well, that's up to you." Amanda smiled."Did you see the look on Ian's face? I bet he was scared down to his pants"."Eww Em, we're eating and I do not want to imagine Ian's pants. That's disgusting." Amanda said.Emily snorted. They ate in silence, paying little to know attention to the chatter around them.At the close of school, Emily and Amanda made their way to Leslie's locker. They needed to pack her things since they didn't know the time she'd be coming back. They had already gotten the permission from the principal before doing this lest they'd be in trouble for raiding another student's locker. When they were done, they left the school grounds which were already desolate and lonely. The only students who seemed to be within school were those taking extra lessons or those who served punishments for one crime or the other. "Em, could you please take Leslie's bag to her. I just remembered, I won't be going home directly. I need to pick up something from the mart first." Amanda said "Sure, don't be long. I'll be at Leslie's." Emily said."Okay, see you later".Amanda made her way out of the school, hailing a cab that was passing by. The cab was occupied as it simply drove away. Amanda decided to ditch getting a ride and simply walked the short distance to the Mart. A few meters awa
In Leslie's house, Amanda recounted all that had happened to her friends. Leslie was getting much better as she tried to get over her mother's death. "I told you that boy was a total douchebag. He's deranged and clearly needs to get his head checked." Emily said."I agree. Why would someone switch characters so easily, it seems as if he's possessed." Leslie said."It baffles me too. One minute he's caring the next he's a beast." Amanda said."Anyway, away from Parker. Did you know Michael approached me today." Emily said."Wait what? Michael, the school's football captain?" Amanda said."The one and only." Emily said."Did he confess to writing those letters?" Leslie said, eagerly."He didn't say that but he did ask me on a date." Emily said.Amanda screeched while Leslie clapped her hands. They were both happy for their friend who until before now had refused the many advances sent her way."I hope you said yes?" Amanda said."I did. But guys, I'm not sure about Michael. I don't know
During lunch time, the whole school was agog over Parker's arrest. Newspaper clippings perpetrated by some of the school's miscreants filled the hallway, the locker rooms and even the bathrooms. The clippings had Parker's picture on it, calling him all sort of names. For a moment, Amanda felt bad for him. Nobody deserved this but if he was found guilty, he deserved everything he got."If you ask my human side, I feel bad for Parker." Emily said."And your inhumane side says what?" Amanda chuckled."Well, not so much pity there." she said."It's just so weird. Someone who just came to the school and now, he's being suspected for murder. I wonder how his parents would feel especially his mum." Amanda said."Away from that. Leslie called yesterday, she'll be resuming school the following week. At least, it's over a month since her mother's death. She said she's ready to resume." Emily sighed."Okay. We'll just be here to give her all the support she needs." Amanda said."Yeah"."That rem
Parker's POV Pain. That was the first thing I felt as soon as I woke up that morning. My soft king-sized bed did little or nothing to ease the many aches I was having all over my body. The ache was due to the fact that I had gotten into a fight again, the third within the week and had to sleep in the police cell uncomfortable bed till my mom came to bail me out. I couldn't help it, it was all a part of me. I couldn't stand and watch people throw insults at my family just because we were victims of circumstance. What befell us wasn't our fault. My dad just needed something, anything else that could better our lives. I couldn't and wouldn't blame him for that because he never knew we would get swindled. Even though we lost everything back in the states, we were not deterred because if there was one thing we had, it was hope. Hope that everything will get better and hope that one day, we would recover all we'd lost. I blinked slowly, trying to get my eyes used to the early morning s
The next morning, the school was restless. As Amanda walked through the halls, she had no idea why this was so. She made her way to the locker room, depositing her bag and books before making her way to her first class. On her way, she met Emily who was to attend another class. "What's happening?" Amanda asked."You haven't heard. Parker's been released, he's at the principal's office. Apparently, the gist is that the real murderer was caught yesterday while trying to escape the city. Parker's off the hook." Emily said."That's good. At least, we're not going to school with a murderer." Amanda said."Honestly. I have to run now babe, I'm running late. See you and oh, Leslie's coming back tomorrow.""Yeah, she called me yesterday. See ya." Amanda said.On getting to class, Parker was already seated in his usual seat at the back of the class. Ian and his friends crowded round him, no doubt trying to scoop for gist. Amanda settled in her chair and soon, a shadow fell over her. Looking
Amanda's POVSchool that day went by in a blur. The only thing that seemed interesting was the school's debate preparation I was currently handling. I was going to be the lead speaker and to say I was nervous would be an understatement, I was downright jittery.Of course, I'd already spoken in some debate shows in the past but this is the largest because several schools across the state would be converging in our grand hall. The debate would be holding the following week and preparations were already in top gear."Babe, cut it out. You're feeling nervous." Emily chuckled. The girls were currently at lunch break, discussing about the debate. "Can you blame be Em? This is by far going to be the biggest I've ever participated in." I smiled"But you'll do great. I'm sure about that." Leslie giggled."Les, how's your dad doing?" Emily asked.Ever since her mother's death, Leslie's father had been trying to hold on to the last remnant of sanity he had. Even a blind man could see how much t
"Hurry up Em." Amanda said for the third time that evening. They were going to be late to the concert just because Emily couldn't decide on what to wear even though she bought three different gowns. They were going to the annual concert which was holding this weekend and Ariana couldn't afford to miss it. She had told Leslie and Emily about Parker's odd behaviour two days ago. Even up until now, she still wondered what came over that day. It just seemed like he was in another body."But you just got new clothes, there are even more in your wardrobe." Amanda said"But the colors look as if they're off." She sighed, walking into the room where Emily was having a hard time deciding on what to wear. Amanda picked up one of the gowns, handing it over to her."Here, wear this. It's much better. "she said, handing the dress over to her. "You're sure?" Emily beamed.Amanda laughed, rolling her eyes. She knew Emily could be dramatic but this was just overboard."Now hurry up or we won't get s
"How was the concert?" Amanda's mum said over breakfast the following day."It was fine mum. Though I really didn't like it so well it's Emily that dragged me but to be honest, I kind of enjoyed it just a bit." she said, sipping her cup of tea."When I was your age, I really loved boy bands. They were called Mirage then but now, they've broken up but boy, could they play. I met your father on one of my outings." She blushed."Oh, so that's how you and Dad met." Amandaaughed."Yes and the rest is history then we had you, the most beautiful child." she said."I feel so special." Amanda laughed."You are. So darling, I'll be traveling next week. I need to sort out some things that need my attention urgently." she said."Oh okay, would dad be traveling too?" She asked."I don't think so. He'll be here for a while before he has to go anywhere." She said.Just then, her dad walked into the kitchen still in his pajamas. He had a sleep filled look in his eyes and Arianna could tell that he ha
