Chapter 13 I’m Just a Poor Girl

Mu Nuannuan was startled for a second before she realized that it was “Moo Jiachen” on the line. “Why haven’t you left?” she asked.

She received the sound of him hanging up as a reply. Irritated, she looked at her phone, then squatted down with her head in her hands.

Why was everyone making her life difficult? Xiao Chuhe and Mu Liyan had brought her to this world but never loved her. They forced her into a marriage where her husband, Moo Tingxiao had no desire to even meet her. She wanted to stay out of trouble, but “Moo Jiachen” always stuck close to her. If she tried to ignore him, would he tell Moo Tingxiao that she was seducing his cousin?

Thinking of the possibility, Mu Nuannuan took a deep breath and stood up. She usually threatened Xiao Chuhe and Mu Wanqi with it, but she knew that it did not matter if “Moo Jiachen” made things up or not. The Moos would offer her as a sacrifice to preserve their family reputation the instant things hit the fan.

Instead of buying the list of dishes, which “Moo Jiachen” requested, Mu Nuannuan went to the wet market to get some fresh ingredients.

Once she was back at her little living unit, she pushed the door open and saw the huge ‘Moo Jiachen’ all snuggled up in her tiny single-seat sofa. The handsome man rested against the backrest with his head tilted to one side and legs crossed in a posture that only a cat would find comfortable. He looked nothing like a person wounded by gunshots except for his pallid face. Plus, he appeared out of place in that shabby and tiny living space. After all, he could not hide the fact that he was the young master of a wealthy family, notwithstanding his less than desirable characteristics.

Mu Nuannuan dropped her things on the table and bent over to change her shoes. Suddenly, a waft of cold energy approached her as Moo Tingxiao went up to her and checked out the ingredients she had just brought back.

“Don’t tell me these are the dishes I’ve ordered.” Moo Tingxiao glanced at her, quirking an eyebrow.

At that point, Mu Nuannuan had already changed into a pair of slippers. Turning to take the ingredients, she replied, “Those dishes are too expensive. I’m just a poor girl.”

Moo Tingxiao looked her up and down, and her clothes did seem cheap as well as ragged. This new wife of his was a sight indeed.

Mu Nuannuan did not give a damn what he thought of her. She took the ingredients into the kitchen.

An hour later, Mu Nuannuan came out of the kitchen with the fruits of her labor. Mu Tingxiao put down his phone, peered at her, then at the dishes she had cooked. They appeared good, light, and healthy, ideal for a patient like him.

Mu Nuannuan scooped up a bowl of rice, put it before him, and never bothered him again. A minute into the meal, she inadvertently noticed a shade of heaviness on “Moo Jiachen’s” face. He seemed to be full of dread, and her heart skipped a beat. What happened? Had she just offended the young master with her cooking?

Mu Tingxiao suddenly put down his chopsticks and headed out. His steps were steady, and he did not look anemic at all.

Mu Nuannuan paused halfway through her meal, stopping short of following him outside.

Outside, Mu Tingxiao dug into his pocket, searching for a cigarette. He then realized that he had run out of them. The taste of her dishes reminded him of his mother. She was from a respected family, yet she was tender and virtuous. Cooking was her hobby.

However, she ended up...

As the thought of the humid and dirty basement came to mind, Moo Tingxiao punched the wall, creating a bang so loud that even Mu Nuannuan could hear it inside the house.

She hesitated on whether she should check on him. In the end, worry got the better of her, and she rushed out the door. “What happened?”
