Chapter 12 It’s Up to You to Believe Me or Not

It disgusted Mu Nuannuan when she saw how mean Mu Wanqi was. Thus, she demanded, “What are you talking about?”

“Have I gotten it wrong? You know better,” Mu Wanqi sneered. “You dare say that you’re not into Chuhan?”

Mu Nuannuan remained silent with her head low. She knew she could not deny it because Shen Chuhan had been the man she liked all this while.

Just then, Mu Wanqi sounded startled. “Chuhan?”

Mu Nuannuan looked up and noticed that Shen Chuhan was already back. Her heart skipped a beat. She wondered how much of the conversation he had heard. However, Shen Chuhan looked away, apparently to avoid her eyes. She knew then that he had heard it all.

Mu Wanqi was pleased to see Shen Chuhan’s reaction. She smiled and consoled him, “Chuhan, there shouldn’t be any more baggage between us. Nuannuan is married. We can now be together.”

That was more like it. Anyone would have reacted the same way before an ugly and dumb woman like Mu Nuannuan. It was a wonder that Moo Tingxiao’s cousin was into her. Perhaps he had an extreme taste in women and was looking for excitement.

“Nuannuan, you’re married?” It was only then did Shen Chuhan look at her.

“She used to tell me that she probably wouldn’t have the chance to get married. Even if she had the chance, she probably wouldn’t marry well. That’s why she wanted to marry into the Moo Family. I tried to dissuade her. The Moo Family may be wealthy, but a husband like that…” As she spoke, Mu Wanqi shook her head, appearing sad.

Mu Nuannuan knew Mu Wanqi was insinuating that she married into the Moo Family for money.

Disappointment appeared in Shen Chuhan’s eyes. He looked at Mu Nuannuan with his brows knitted together. “Thank you for taking Wanqi’s place to marry into the Moo Family.”

“Yeah, if not for you, Chuhan and I would never be together.” Mu Wanqi wore a grateful face.

Mu Nuannuan bit her lip, trying to explain in her hoarse voice, “It’s nothing like what she said.” She knew that she and Shen Chuhan would never be together, but she did not want him to mistake her as a gold digger.

Shen Chuhan frowned and said, “Nuannuan, you don’t have to explain. I can understand how you feel. Although Moo Tingxiao is… impotent, the Moo Family will treat you well.”

Mu Nuannuan’s heart sank. Just then, her phone vibrated. She checked, and it was a text message with a list of dishes sent from an unknown number. She did not know who it was, but she figured she could use it as an excuse to leave.

“Something just came up. I need to leave.” She rose to her feet and looked at Shen Chuhan emotionlessly. “I don’t deny that I used to like you, but that’s a thing of the past. Why did I marry into the Moo Family? I think Mu Wanqi knows better than anyone else. It’s up to you to believe me or not.”

She liked Shen Chuhan because he was the only man who had never shunned her. Instead, he cared for her. Yet, by the looks of things, it was just false sympathy. The friendship between the Shen Family and Mu Family spanned across generations. They had known each other for years; he should have trusted her. Then again, even her mother, Xiao Chuhe did not trust her. How could she expect an outsider like Shen Chuhan to do so?

After all was said and done, she left the private dining room without looking back.

As she closed the door behind her, she heard Shen Chuhan say to Mu Wanqi, “I used to think that Nuannuan was a simple and goodhearted girl. I can’t believe she’s actually like that.”

“Me too…” As usual, Mu Wanqi pretended to be sad.

Mu Nuannuan clenched her firsts, pressed her lips together, and walked out of the restaurant facing forward. Her phone rang in her pocket, and she pressed the answer button without even looking at it. A familiar low voice said, “Buy and bring back all of the dishes listed in the text.”
