Chapter 6

Penulis: Little Birdie
So… Joseph valued Charlotte's life over his own.

Stacy had gotten the answer she wanted. She withdrew her hand, swallowed the anguished protests she yearned to make, and forced a smile for him.

"Fine, transfer yourself over there, if that's what you want. However, I'll have to let your sister know about all this, in case anything goes wrong along the way."

Then she turned sharply on her heel, and strode out of the room.

Just before the door closed shut behind her, she heard Joseph speak up, his tone anxious. "I won't transfer, then! Stacy, please don't tell my sister! She can't find out!"

What exactly was it he didn't want Jeanne finding out about? That he'd gotten hurt? Or that he'd been dating her best friend behind her back?

Stacy didn't know the answer to this question, and she honestly couldn't be bothered to care anymore.

Ultimately, she decided not to inform Jeanne. Her best friend was having a good time on vacation. No reason to ruin her mood.

She found two of the hospital's staff, and made arrangements for Joseph's stay.

When they served food to her own room there, they would often make some sort of report to her as well.

"Ms. Rivers, Mr. Dorne has been asking about you again. In particular, he's wondering if you're upset with him."

Stacy merely grunted in response.

After lunch, she visited Joseph's room. He wasn't there.

The staff were just finishing up with the cleaning. Seeing her, they said, "Mr. Dorne has applied to be transferred over to Southpoint Hospital."

He'd flown the coop. Stacy allowed herself a wry little smile.

She unlocked her phone, and scrolled through the messages Joseph had been sending her these past few days.

[Stacy, I'm bored… come over here and hang out with me.]

[It's been three days since we last spoke… Don't you miss me?]

[Please forgive me. I'll buy you something nice, once we're out of here. How's that sound?]

If she didn't know about Charlotte, it would have been easy for Stacy to believe that this boy was head-over-heels for her.

However, having now seen what he was like when he really loved a girl, she no longer bought into such delusions.

Returning to her place on her own, she contacted an agent, and put her condominium apartment up for sale online.

Over the next few days, half-a-dozen prospective buyers came by to inspect the premises.

Eager to complete the sale sooner rather than later, she'd offered it up at quite a bargain. Sure enough, it didn't take long at all to secure a deal.

Just as Stacy was signing off on the agreement, Joseph walked in. Surprised, he noted the company uniform worn by the real estate agent.

"Stacy, you're selling this place off?"

No point lying about it now. She nodded affirmatively.

He cocked an eyebrow, and then surveyed the room nonchalantly. "Yeah… this place has been feeling kinda cramped. You could move into my villa, in West Hills. I've had it for a while now, but it's mostly been left vacant."

Stacy didn't answer. Instead, she saw the agent out the door, and then changed the topic. "Are you feeling better these days?"

"Much better!" Joseph trilled cheerfully. "See, I knew you cared!" He strode up to her, wrapped his arms around her waist, and leaned in for a kiss.

His breath was hot, like the blast from a furnace. Stacy dodged aside reflexively.

Joseph stared at her, puzzled.

Keeping a straight face, she fibbed, "I'm on my period."

Joseph sighed faintly. "Stacy, it's not always like that… we haven't seen each other in a while. Is it so hard to believe that I just miss you? Just want to kiss you?"

Indeed, Stacy found that hard to believe.

She no longer had the patience to put up with his endless theatrics. Muttering various excuses, she went to wash up and go to bed.

The next couple of days, Joseph didn't leave.

Stacy brought out a box, containing all the mementos collected over the years they'd been together.

Matching mugs, a shaving razor she'd bought for him, gifts he'd given to her, couple of selfies, miscellaneous trinkets…

She gathered them all up, every single item, and stuffed them all into a rubbish bag.

Joseph emerged from the study, noticed how bare the whole house suddenly felt, and began to get nervous.

"Why are you throwing this all away?"

"Didn't you say something about moving to your spare villa? I'm just cleaning up some odds and ends."

This explanation allayed his doubts somewhat, but he nevertheless detected that she was in a peculiar sort of mood. That evening, he managed to convince her to accompany him to some sort of auction.

The first several pieces were jewelry, and Joseph bought them all without a moment's hesitation. Stacy received envious looks from all across the hall… but she wasn't the least bit interested in any of it.

As he was getting up from his seat, Joseph's phone rang.

Stacy glanced at the screen. It was Charlotte. Without a word, she headed off to the restroom.

When Joseph woke up again, he found himself lying on a hospital bed. The sharp, pungent smell of antiseptic filled his nostrils, and the blaring white lights from above made his eyes hurt. He tried to move his body, and the resulting pain made him almost bite his tongue out, hissing as he took a breath in."You're awake." Jeanne's voice came from beside his hospital bed, tinged with coldness and resignation.Turning his head slightly, he saw his sister sitting there by the bed, her expression dark with fury. Her eyes were filled with anger and disappointment, and she spoke through gritted teeth, "How could I have a little brother like you? Did you know that you almost became a cripple?! Since you're awake now, don't even think about resting. Go back to Balmora immediately and never come back!"Joseph didn't pay any heed to her scolding, asking desperately, "Where's Stacy? Did she come to visit me?"Jeanne seemed to become even more enraged at his question, but before she could answe

Jeanne stared at him coldly, her tone laced with disdain, "Impossible? Joseph, wake up! Stacy's already gotten over you, and the only one she loves now is Gareth. Even if you die right here, she won't even take another look at you."Joseph continued grabbing onto her hand, ignoring her words. His voice was tinged with desperation as he pleaded, "Please help me, Jeanne… I… I can't live without her…"Jeanne almost passed out from anger, shaking his hand away. "Snap out of it, Joseph! Either you go back to Balmora right now, or I tell Mom and Dad to drag you home!"Joseph continued staring at the entrance to the wedding venue, eyes filled with despair and pleading.Jeanne, trembling with fury, turned around and left, only to hear rushed footsteps coming from behind her. Looking back, she saw Joseph make a mad dash towards the parking lot of the wedding venue.Stacy and Gareth were just about to get in their car when Joseph dashed toward them, grabbing Stacy's hand like a lifeline and

Joseph was dragged out of the wedding venue by security. The heavy doors slammed shut behind him with a loud bang, cutting off the lively merriment that was inside. However, standing outside the door, it was still as if he could hear everything that was happening. The emcee announcing the exchange of rings, the guests' laughter and teasing, and the sound of a soft kiss, as light as a feather, yet was enough to break his heart. It felt like an invisible hand had seized his heart in a crushing grip, the pain making it almost impossible to breathe. He lunged at the door, pounding on it with all his strength, his voice hoarse as he cried out, "Open the door! Please, open the door! Stacy, please don't marry him, I'm begging you! I'm begging you…"However, no one inside the venue seemed to hear him… Or perhaps, didn't want to hear him. The wedding continued, laughter, applause and cheers resounding the halls. Each blessing-filled cheer was like a stab to the heart, cold knives burying deep

It was as if he'd been struck by a bolt of lightning.Joseph stood there, shivering from head to toe as if a basin of ice-cold water had been splashed onto him, but his eyes were locked onto Stacy, standing there on the stage. She was wearing a pristine wedding gown, smiling happily while standing next to another man. Jeanne was there too, standing right next to her in her bridesmaid's gown and beaming with joy, as if she was witnessing the most beautiful ceremony in the world. At that point, the truth was practically being thrown in his face. This was truly Stacy's wedding. His mind went blank, his ears ringing as his entire world crumbled around him.It was only until the announcer's voice rang in his ears again that he was shook violently back into reality. "Do you, Miss Rivers, take Mr. York as your lawfully wedded husband, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health? To always love, respect, and cherish him for as long as you live?"Stacy looked up at her future husba

The moment the message was sent, the entire group exploded.[Damn, took you long enough! You don't like Charlotte anymore, right?][Someone like her wasn't worth your time of day!][But… Would Stacy forgive you after you hurt her so badly?]Joseph stared at the messages in the group chat, his fingers tapping the screen quickly. [I've already fallen out of love for her in the first place, and all I had left was just an obsession. In the days I spent with her, Stacy was the only one I could think about, so that made me realize how I really felt.]The group chat was quiet for a few seconds, before messages burst again.[Yeah, good for you! Charlotte really wasn't worth it! Oh right, once her pictures got exposed to the public, her family's stocks plummeted, and they've already gone bankrupt! She's getting scolded and beaten by her parents every day, and they're even planning on leaving Balmora!]Joseph frowned slightly, but not even a ripple appeared in his heart. He'd lost all in

In Safeport, Stacy got up early and began getting ready. Her pure white wedding dress was custom-made, accentuating her slim waist and swan-like neckline. The moment she put it on and walked out, everyone in the room looked at her in awe."Oh my goodness, you're gorgeous!" Her friends gathered around her, marvelling at how beautiful she looked.Stacy smiled, her gaze landing on the mirror. In the mirror, her delicate features were like a painting, and her lips were curled slightly in happiness."The groom is here!" Somebody shouted.Stacy turned around, and Gareth walked in. He was wearing a perfectly fitted black suit, his tall and well-built figure exuding elegance. His gaze immediately went towards Stacy, his eyes filled with undisguised amazement."Isn't Stacy beautiful?" someone asked with a smile.Gareth didn't reply, only walking toward her and leaning down to press a soft kiss on her neck, his voice deep and gentle. "My girl is the most beautiful girl in the world."S
