Elena stared at the crushed black poker chip in Damian's palm, the tiny engraved words "Theo sends his regards" now illegible under the pressure of his fist. The penthouse air felt thicker, every breath carrying the weight of too many converging lies.

Mia tilted her head, still clutching her unicorn. "Why did the tall man break the toy coin?"

Damian opened his hand slowly, letting the fragments fall onto the marble island like dark confetti. He crouched to Mia's level again, voice gentle despite the storm behind his eyes.

"It's not a toy, sweetheart. It's a message. And we're going to send one back."

He lifted her onto the counter so she sat between him and Elena, small legs swinging. For a moment the three of them formed a perfect triangle, father, mother, child, while the city burned below with flashbulbs and headlines.

Elena's phone vibrated relentlessly. She glanced at the screen: Lila again.

Lila: Sarah just emailed the agency from her new Vanguard address. Says she's been "promoted" to lead coordinator on Horizon creative. Wants a joint briefing this afternoon. She's copying Theo and Victoria. What the hell is happening?

Elena showed Damian the message.

His expression darkened further. "Theo's moving pieces while we're still reacting. Sarah isn't just a mole, she's his queen now."

Cut to Vanguard headquarters, executive floor, same time.

Sarah walked down the corridor with the confidence of someone who had already won. Her heels clicked in perfect rhythm. In her hand: a slim folder labeled "Horizon – Phase 1 Accelerated Timeline."

Theo waited in the glass-walled conference room, arms crossed, watching her approach like a predator appreciating his own reflection.

She closed the door behind her.

"Promotion letter signed by you thirty minutes ago," she said, sliding the folder across the table. "Official title: Senior Creative Liaison, Vanguard–Reyes joint venture. Board approved it unanimously while Damian was busy playing house."

Theo opened the folder, scanned the signature page. "They bought the 'fresh perspective' line?"

"Hook, line, and sinker. Half of them are terrified of the scandal tanking stock further. The other half think putting someone 'neutral' from outside will calm the waters." She leaned against the table, skirt riding up just enough. "They have no idea I'm the one who leaked the preschool photos to the gossip sites."

Theo reached out, traced a finger along her thigh. "And the black roses?"

"Delivered personally by one of my contacts. The poker chip was a nice touch, your idea." She smiled. "Theo sends his regards. Classic."

He pulled her onto his lap. "You keep this up and you'll be running creative when I'm CEO."

Sarah kissed him once, then stood again, smoothing her skirt. "One condition. When you take Damian down, I want Elena's agency carcass. Full acquisition. I built the narrative that destroyed her; I want to own what's left."

Theo laughed low. "Done."

Back in the penthouse.

Elena paced while Damian spoke on the phone with his investigator.

"Everything on Sarah. Employment history, bank records, known associates, social media aliases, everything. Cross-reference with Theo's travel, calls, payments. And pull the security footage from the hallway camera that caught our kiss last night. Someone tampered with it."

He ended the call, turned to Elena.

"We have maybe six hours before the gala. Victoria expects us there at seven. Red carpet. Photographers. The whole performance."

Elena stopped pacing. "We're not performing. We're ending this."

Damian nodded. "Agreed. But we need leverage. Something bigger than Theo's grudge or Victoria's blackmail."

Mia's small hand tugged Elena's tank. "Mommy, can I wear a pretty dress tonight too?"

Elena knelt. "Not tonight, baby. Tonight Mommy and the tall man have to go to a grown-up party. But soon we'll have a real party. With cake and balloons and everyone who loves you."

Mia beamed. "Will the tall man be my daddy then?"

The question hung like smoke.

Damian knelt beside them. "I'm already your daddy, Mia. I just didn't know it until now. But I promise, I'm never leaving again."

Mia threw her arms around his neck. Damian held her tight, eyes meeting Elena's over her shoulder.

The moment shattered when Elena's phone rang, her mother.

She answered warily.

Maria Reyes sounded breathless. "Elena, listen carefully. I sent everything to Detective Ramirez. The letter Victoria made me sign five years ago promising silence for money. Bank transfers she routed through shells. Even the name of the man she hired to follow you after Vegas, the one who sent the black roses every year."

Elena gripped the phone. "Why now?"

"Because I saw the news. Saw Mia's face everywhere. I can't let them hurt her. Victoria promised she'd protect you if I stayed quiet. She lied. She's been using the photos to control Damian's board votes for years."

Elena glanced at Damian. He nodded, keep her talking.

"And the video?" Elena asked. "The full hotel tape?"

Maria hesitated. "Theo has it. He bought it from the hotel security chief months ago. He's planning to release it tonight, after the gala, if Damian doesn't step down."

Elena closed her eyes. "Thank you, Mom. For finally telling the truth."

"I love you, baby. And Mia. I'm sorry it took this long."

The call ended.

Damian stood, Mia still in his arms. "We have proof Victoria blackmailed your mother. We have Theo possessing illegal surveillance. We have Sarah as his plant. We turn this on them tonight."

Elena rose. "How?"

"We go to the gala. We let them think we're broken. Then we drop the bomb, publicly. Press conference after the red carpet. Live stream. Every revelation. Every document. Every name."

Mia's eyes widened. "Will there be fireworks?"

Damian smiled, dark, determined. "Oh yes, sweetheart. The biggest ones you've ever seen."

Meanwhile, in a nondescript office across town, Detective Ramirez opened Maria's email attachment.

He read the scanned letter. The transfers. The names.

Then he picked up his phone.

"Captain, I need a warrant. Fast. Victoria Holt. Theo Holt. Sarah, last name pending. Extortion, blackmail, wire fraud, and conspiracy to defame. We're crashing a gala tonight."

The pieces were moving.

All converging on one glittering ballroom.

Where smiles would hide knives.

And one family's truth would either save them or destroy them forever.

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 34: The Sister Who Erased Him

I stood frozen, the USB drive still warm from the laptop. The video was paused on the last frame; Victoria leaning over the sleeping Damian, her fingers brushing his hair like she owned him. Her whisper still echoed in my head.'Sleep well, little brother.'Little brother. Not half-sister. Full sister. The words sat heavy in my throat. I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t even breathe properly.Damian was still waiting exactly where I’d left him, leaning against the kitchen island, arms crossed, eyes locked on me the second I appeared. The moment he saw my face he straightened, the easy calm in his posture vanishing.“Elena?” His voice was low, careful. “What is it?”I walked over and placed the USB on the counter between us like it might burn me. My hands were shaking. “I watched it. All of it.”He reached for me, but I stepped back. Not because I didn’t want him, because I didn’t know how to say the next part without breaking something between us.“Victoria wasn’t just trying to ruin us,”

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 33: The Secret She Carried Home

The hospital corridor smelled like bleach and lilies. I clutched the tiny USB drive in my fist so hard the plastic edges dug into my palm. My mother’s words kept echoing: 'Watch it alone first.' I could still feel the weight of her hand in mine, the way her fingers had trembled when she pressed the drive into my palm.I stepped into the elevator alone. The doors slid shut and I leaned against the mirrored wall, staring at my own reflection. Eyes red. Lips pressed tight. The woman looking back at me looked like she was one breath away from breaking.'What the hell is on this thing?'When I stepped outside, Damian was waiting exactly where he said he would be, leaning against the car, arms crossed, eyes scanning every face that left the building until they landed on me. The second he saw me he straightened, opening the passenger door before I even reached him.I slid in without a word. He got behind the wheel, started the engine, but didn’t pull away. Instead he turned to me, one hand r

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 32: The Night She Couldn't Say No

I stared at the message until the words blurred. 'New tests this morning. Come alone tonight.' My thumb hovered over the screen, heart hammering so hard it felt like it was trying to punch through my ribs. The penthouse was quiet except for the low hum of the fridge and Mia’s soft breathing from down the hall. I locked the phone and set it face-down on the counter like it might bite me.'What else could she possibly have to tell me? We already know Victoria set up the night in Vegas. We already know Marcus turned on them. What is left?'Damian stepped out of the bedroom, hair still damp from the shower we’d shared earlier. He took one look at my face and crossed the room in three strides.“What is it?” he asked, voice low.I handed him the phone without a word. He read it once, jaw tightening.“I’m driving you,” he said immediately.“She said alone.”“I’ll wait in the car. As close as you need me.” He set the phone down and pulled me against him, one hand sliding up my back under the

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 31: The Morning She Couldn’t Stop Crying

I stood barefoot in the kitchen, silk robe slipping off one shoulder, staring at the city lights that refused to care. My mother’s words from yesterday kept looping in my head like a broken record. Stage four. Not much time left. The way she tried to smile through it, like cancer was just another secret we could bury with the rest of them. My chest felt hollow, like someone had scooped everything out and left only this heavy, aching void.I gripped the marble counter until my knuckles turned white. Tears slipped down my cheeks again, hot and silent. I thought I had cried them all out in the hospital, but apparently my body had an endless supply.*Why her? After everything she sacrificed, after all the lies and the blackmail and the Vegas mess… this is how it ends?*I didn’t hear Damian come in. One second I was alone with my thoughts, the next his bare chest was pressed against my back, warm and solid, his arms sliding around my waist like he could hold the pieces of me together.“I k

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 30: The Whistleblower Contact

Elena lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The penthouse was quiet except for the faint hum of the city far below. It was late at night, but sleep refused to come. Her mind kept drifting back to her mother in the hospital. The last message had said she was stable, but Elena could not stop wondering what her mother wanted to tell her in the morning. What secret was left? What part of that night in Vegas had they still not uncovered? She shifted restlessly under the sheets. Damian stirred beside her and opened his eyes."You are not sleeping," he said softly, his voice warm in the darkness. He turned toward her and pulled her closer, his hand resting on her waist. "What is on your mind?"Elena sighed. "My mother. She is in the hospital again. I keep thinking about what she wants to tell me tomorrow. What if it is something we do not want to hear?"Damian kissed her forehead gently. "Whatever it is, we will face it together. But right now you need to rest. Your mind is racing."He reached

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 29: Damian's Father Disapproves

The afternoon sun poured through the penthouse windows as Elena reached up for a glass in the kitchen. She was wearing only one of Damian's oversized shirts that barely reached her thighs. The fabric rode up as she stretched, exposing the curve of her bare ass.Damian walked in from the hallway and stopped, eyes darkening at the sight. He crossed the room in three strides, pressed his body against her back, and slid his hands under the shirt. His palms cupped her breasts as he kissed the side of her neck."You look far too tempting like this," he murmured, voice low and hungry. His fingers rolled her nipples until they hardened into tight peaks.Elena gasped softly, leaning back into him. "We have the strategy session soon.""Session can wait," he replied, one hand sliding down her stomach until his fingers found her already wet pussy. He stroked her slowly, teasing her clit with light circles. "I need you right now."He turned her around, lifted her onto the kitchen counter, and drop
