Chapter 16: The Anonymous Tip

Elena kept her phone hidden in her clutch as she and Damian stepped back onto the stage. The threatening message still burned in her mind. Damian had seen it too. His hand stayed firm on her lower back, steady even as the crowd pressed closer and cameras flashed nonstop.

Maria stood just behind them, her presence a quiet anchor. The envelope from her rested safely in Damian’s jacket. The gala hall felt electric now, every guest whispering, every reporter leaning forward.

Damian took the microphone again. “As I already told the board moments ago, the vote scheduled for tonight is canceled. Any decision made under false information will be challenged in court tomorrow morning.”

The room stayed tense. Victoria remained frozen near the bar. Theo and Sarah had been escorted out, but the damage was done. Board members whispered in tight clusters.

Elena’s phone vibrated once more inside her clutch. She slipped it out just enough to glance at the screen.

Another message from the same unknown number.

‘Anonymous tip incoming. The real third person in that Vegas room is about to speak. He has proof that changes everything about Mia. Check your email in sixty seconds.’

She showed Damian the screen. He read it quickly and nodded once, his expression unchanged for the cameras.

They stepped off the stage together. Maria followed close behind. Security cleared a path toward a private side room.

Sixty seconds later Elena’s phone pinged with a new email. The subject line read: “The man in the mirror.”

She opened it. A short video clip loaded. A man in his late forties sat in a dimly lit room, face visible for the first time. He looked straight into the camera.

“My name is Marcus Vale. Five years ago Victoria Holt paid me to be in that Vegas suite the entire night. I filmed everything from a hidden camera in the mirror. I was the third person in the room. I saw it all.”

The man continued. “Victoria wanted insurance. She told me to keep recording even after they fell asleep. But something else happened. The next morning, after Elena left, Damian received a phone call. He mentioned a name. A name that connects directly to Mia’s medical records.”

The clip ended.

Elena felt the floor shift beneath her. “He knows something about Mia’s health condition.”

Damian’s voice stayed low. “We meet him tonight. Before Theo can use this.”

Maria touched Elena’s arm. “I never knew there was a third person. Victoria swore it was only the two of you.”

They stepped into the private boardroom. The members sat around a long table, faces serious.

Damian placed the envelope and the USB drive on the table. “Here is every document. Every transfer. The real video. And now this.”

He played the new clip for the board.

The room went silent as the recorded voice of Marcus Vale filled the space.

One board member leaned forward. “If this is true, Theo and Victoria have been manipulating us for years.”

Another nodded. “The vote is officially off the table. We need an emergency audit starting tomorrow.”

Victoria burst into the room at that moment, Theo right behind her. Both stopped when they saw the board’s expressions.

Theo tried to speak. “This is all fabricated—”

Damian cut him off. “We just received an anonymous tip with new footage. A man named Marcus Vale. He was in the room that night. He has the original tape and he is ready to talk.”

Theo’s face went pale. “You are lying.”

Damian held up his phone. “The email came sixty seconds ago. He is willing to meet us tonight. With full proof.”

Sarah slipped in behind them, eyes wide. She tried to back out but security blocked the door.

The board chairman stood. “Theo, Victoria, Sarah — you are all suspended immediately pending full investigation. Security will escort you out.”

Theo laughed bitterly. “You think this ends it? The real tape still shows something none of you know. Something about the child.”

Damian stepped forward. “Then release it. Right now. In front of everyone.”

Theo hesitated. His phone buzzed in his hand. He looked at the screen and his confidence cracked for the first time.

He turned and walked out without another word. Sarah and Victoria followed, flanked by security.

The board chairman looked at Damian. “We will reconvene in the morning. The company stands with you.”

Damian nodded. “Thank you.”

As they left the boardroom Elena’s phone rang. Unknown number again.

She answered.

Marcus Vale’s voice came through. “I am outside the gala. Black car near the side exit. Come alone or with Damian. No one else. I have the full tape and the medical file that connects everything to Mia’s condition.”

The call ended.

Damian looked at Elena. “We go now.”

Maria touched her daughter’s hand. “I will stay here and speak to the press if needed. Go. Find the truth.”

They slipped out through the side exit. A black car waited in the shadows. The back door opened.

Marcus Vale sat inside. Older than he looked in the video. Tired eyes.

He held up a USB drive. “This is the real tape. The one Theo bought was edited. Mine shows the full night. Including the phone call Damian made the next morning.”

Damian took the drive. “What does it show about Mia?”

Marcus leaned forward. “The call was to a doctor. Damian arranged a full genetic test that morning. The results are on this drive. They show Mia carries the same rare condition from his side of the family. Victoria knew about it years ago. She has been using the information to control the board and the medical funding.”

Elena felt the pieces click together. “That is why the allergies started. Why the treatment is so expensive.”

Marcus nodded. “Theo plans to release the unedited tape in thirty minutes. It will make it look like Damian knew about the child and abandoned her. But this version shows the truth. Use it before he does.”

Damian shook the man’s hand. “Thank you.”

Marcus stepped out of the car. “Good luck. You are going to need it.”

The car door closed. They drove back toward the gala entrance.

Elena looked at Damian. “We have everything now.”

Damian slipped the new drive into his pocket beside the others. “Then we end this once and for all.”

The gala lights still glowed ahead. The press conference stage waited.

And the final tape was about to drop.

But this time they held the real one.

I stood frozen, the USB drive still warm from the laptop. The video was paused on the last frame; Victoria leaning over the sleeping Damian, her fingers brushing his hair like she owned him. Her whisper still echoed in my head.'Sleep well, little brother.'Little brother. Not half-sister. Full sister. The words sat heavy in my throat. I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t even breathe properly.Damian was still waiting exactly where I’d left him, leaning against the kitchen island, arms crossed, eyes locked on me the second I appeared. The moment he saw my face he straightened, the easy calm in his posture vanishing.“Elena?” His voice was low, careful. “What is it?”I walked over and placed the USB on the counter between us like it might burn me. My hands were shaking. “I watched it. All of it.”He reached for me, but I stepped back. Not because I didn’t want him, because I didn’t know how to say the next part without breaking something between us.“Victoria wasn’t just trying to ruin us,”

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 33: The Secret She Carried Home

The hospital corridor smelled like bleach and lilies. I clutched the tiny USB drive in my fist so hard the plastic edges dug into my palm. My mother’s words kept echoing: 'Watch it alone first.' I could still feel the weight of her hand in mine, the way her fingers had trembled when she pressed the drive into my palm.I stepped into the elevator alone. The doors slid shut and I leaned against the mirrored wall, staring at my own reflection. Eyes red. Lips pressed tight. The woman looking back at me looked like she was one breath away from breaking.'What the hell is on this thing?'When I stepped outside, Damian was waiting exactly where he said he would be, leaning against the car, arms crossed, eyes scanning every face that left the building until they landed on me. The second he saw me he straightened, opening the passenger door before I even reached him.I slid in without a word. He got behind the wheel, started the engine, but didn’t pull away. Instead he turned to me, one hand r

I stared at the message until the words blurred. 'New tests this morning. Come alone tonight.' My thumb hovered over the screen, heart hammering so hard it felt like it was trying to punch through my ribs. The penthouse was quiet except for the low hum of the fridge and Mia’s soft breathing from down the hall. I locked the phone and set it face-down on the counter like it might bite me.'What else could she possibly have to tell me? We already know Victoria set up the night in Vegas. We already know Marcus turned on them. What is left?'Damian stepped out of the bedroom, hair still damp from the shower we’d shared earlier. He took one look at my face and crossed the room in three strides.“What is it?” he asked, voice low.I handed him the phone without a word. He read it once, jaw tightening.“I’m driving you,” he said immediately.“She said alone.”“I’ll wait in the car. As close as you need me.” He set the phone down and pulled me against him, one hand sliding up my back under the

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 31: The Morning She Couldn’t Stop Crying

I stood barefoot in the kitchen, silk robe slipping off one shoulder, staring at the city lights that refused to care. My mother’s words from yesterday kept looping in my head like a broken record. Stage four. Not much time left. The way she tried to smile through it, like cancer was just another secret we could bury with the rest of them. My chest felt hollow, like someone had scooped everything out and left only this heavy, aching void.I gripped the marble counter until my knuckles turned white. Tears slipped down my cheeks again, hot and silent. I thought I had cried them all out in the hospital, but apparently my body had an endless supply.*Why her? After everything she sacrificed, after all the lies and the blackmail and the Vegas mess… this is how it ends?*I didn’t hear Damian come in. One second I was alone with my thoughts, the next his bare chest was pressed against my back, warm and solid, his arms sliding around my waist like he could hold the pieces of me together.“I k

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 30: The Whistleblower Contact

Elena lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The penthouse was quiet except for the faint hum of the city far below. It was late at night, but sleep refused to come. Her mind kept drifting back to her mother in the hospital. The last message had said she was stable, but Elena could not stop wondering what her mother wanted to tell her in the morning. What secret was left? What part of that night in Vegas had they still not uncovered? She shifted restlessly under the sheets. Damian stirred beside her and opened his eyes."You are not sleeping," he said softly, his voice warm in the darkness. He turned toward her and pulled her closer, his hand resting on her waist. "What is on your mind?"Elena sighed. "My mother. She is in the hospital again. I keep thinking about what she wants to tell me tomorrow. What if it is something we do not want to hear?"Damian kissed her forehead gently. "Whatever it is, we will face it together. But right now you need to rest. Your mind is racing."He reached

  • Familiar Strangers    Chapter 29: Damian's Father Disapproves

The afternoon sun poured through the penthouse windows as Elena reached up for a glass in the kitchen. She was wearing only one of Damian's oversized shirts that barely reached her thighs. The fabric rode up as she stretched, exposing the curve of her bare ass.Damian walked in from the hallway and stopped, eyes darkening at the sight. He crossed the room in three strides, pressed his body against her back, and slid his hands under the shirt. His palms cupped her breasts as he kissed the side of her neck."You look far too tempting like this," he murmured, voice low and hungry. His fingers rolled her nipples until they hardened into tight peaks.Elena gasped softly, leaning back into him. "We have the strategy session soon.""Session can wait," he replied, one hand sliding down her stomach until his fingers found her already wet pussy. He stroked her slowly, teasing her clit with light circles. "I need you right now."He turned her around, lifted her onto the kitchen counter, and drop
