Aria's POV

The forest beyond Nightshade territory felt different than I remembered. Darker. More hostile. Or maybe that was just knowing Dante waited somewhere in these shadows, armed and dangerous and convinced I had betrayed everything we once were.

I moved through the underbrush silently, years of survival training making each step deliberate. The crescent moon provided barely enough light to see by, which meant tracking would be difficult. But I knew my brother. Knew the patterns he followed, the places he felt safe.

The old Grayfang ruins lay three miles east, abandoned since the night our pack fell. Dante would go there. He always did when he needed to remember why he fought, why he killed. Our parents were buried there, in unmarked graves he had dug alone while I watched, too young and broken to help.

A branch snapped behind me.

I spun, claws extending instinctively, but found only shadows and silence. My wolf pushed against my skin, sensing danger she could not identify. I for

Aria’s POVI Could not sleep. Each time I closed my eyes, I saw Dante's face, heard his warnings about Sarah, remembered him throwing that knife to save Kael despite his own injuries. None of it fit with the manipulative villain everyone believed him to be.Unless all of it had been manipulation.Layer upon layer of deception designed to make me defend him. Make me doubt my own judgment. Make me the perfect weapon to divide Nightshade from within.“Still awake?”Mira’s voice came from the doorway. She entered without waiting for permission, carrying two mugs.“Thought you might need company.”“I need answers,” I said, accepting the tea. “But thank you.”“The hunting party leaves at dawn,” Mira said, settling beside me. “Luna, Silas, and ten of our best trackers. Kael is leading them personally.”“To kill my brother.”The words tasted like poison in my mouth.“To protect the pack,” Mira corrected gently. “Aria, I know you love Dante. But he escaped. After everything we did to give him

  • Fated By War   Chapter Forty-Three: The Breaking Point

Kael’s POVSarah's trial was swift and brutal. The recording of her confession left no room for denial or manipulation. She had murdered my father, orchestrated attacks on the pack, and nearly destroyed everything we had built. The vote for execution was unanimous. She died at dawn, defiant till the end, cursing us all with her final breath.I should have felt satisfied. Justice served, the real killer punished, my father's death avenged. Instead, I felt hollow. Another body added to the pile of wolves who had died in this endless cycle of revenge and retribution.“It had to be done,” Silas said beside me as we watched the pyre consume Sarah's body. “She would never have stopped. Would never have accepted anything less than total victory.”“I know.” I turned away from the flames. “That does not make it easier.”The compound had fallen into an uneasy calm. Sarah's captured forces had been given a choice: integrate into Nightshade under strict probation, or leave and never return. Most

  • Fated By War   Chapter Forty-Two: The Truth Beneath

I found Dante in the medical wing, still helping Vera treat wolves suffering from smoke inhalation. His hands moved with practiced efficiency, wrapping bandages and administering herbs gently."We need to talk," I said from the doorway. "Privately."Vera looked between us, then nodded. "Take fifteen minutes. I can manage here."The guards escorted us to a small storage room off the main medical area. They remained outside, close enough to intervene if needed but far enough to give us the illusion of privacy."Sarah is at our gates," I said without preamble. "She claims you did not poison Marcus. That someone else did, and you took credit for it."Dante's expression remained neutral. "And you believe her?""I do not know what to believe anymore." Frustration bled into my voice. "Did you poison Marcus Brennan or not?""I told everyone I did." He sat on a supply crate, favoring his injured leg. "I confessed in front of the entire pack. Why question it now?""Because Sarah has Marcus's si

  • Fated By War   Chapter Forty-One: Smoke and Mirrors

Aria's POVThe fire increased as night fell, it came close enough that I could feel the heat through the compound walls. Smoke turned the air thick, making every breath a struggle. Wolves worked in shifts, fighting flames and evacuating belongings from threatened buildings.I worked alongside Mira and Luna, hauling water and helping move children to safer areas. My shoulder ached from the exertion, but stopping felt impossible when everyone else pushed through exhaustion."The fire is not spreading as fast as it should," Mira observed as we took a brief rest. "The wind should be pushing it toward us, but it keeps stalling.""Sarah is controlling it somehow," Luna said, her face stained with ash. "Keeping it close enough to terrify us but not close enough to actually destroy the compound. She wants us exhausted and afraid, not dead.""Why?" I asked. "If she wanted us dead, this fire could accomplish that.""Because dead wolves cannot suffer," a voice said behind us.I turned to find Da

  • Fated By War    Chapter Forty: Three Days

Kael's POVThe first day after Sarah's escape passed. We found nothing. No tracks, no witnesses, no sign of where she had gone or who had helped her. She had vanished like smoke, leaving only questions and the ticking countdown in that message. Two days remained.I stood in the war room with my inner circle, staring at maps that offered no answers. Silas, Luna, Elena, Mira, and Aria surrounded the table, all looking as exhausted as I felt."She could be anywhere by now," Luna said, marking possible routes on the map. "Borderlands, Council territory, or hiding in our own backyard waiting to strike.""The message said three days," Elena pointed out. "If she meant it, she is close. Waiting for the deadline.""Or the message is a distraction," Silas countered. "Keep us focused on a false deadline while the real attack comes from somewhere else entirely.""We are going in circles," I said. "Every theory leads to more questions. Every precaution leaves another weakness.""Then we stop tryin

  • Fated By War    Chapter Thirty-Nine: Masks and Shadows

Two days after Dante's trial, I found myself in the training yard again. Luna had insisted I needed to rebuild strength after my injuries."Again," Luna commanded as I failed another defensive sequence. "You are dropping your guard on the left. That is how you got stabbed.""I got stabbed protecting Kael," I panted, resetting my stance."And you will get stabbed again if you do not fix your form." She lunged, her practice dagger stopping inches from my ribs. "Dead. Again."I groaned but reset. We had been at this for two hours, and my body was ready to collapse. But Luna was relentless, and I was determined to prove I belonged here through more than just the mate bond."Better," she said after I successfully blocked her next three strikes. "You are learning. Slowly, but learning.""High praise from you," I said dryly."Do not get used to it." But she smiled slightly. "Take five minutes. Hydrate. Then we work on offensive combinations."I collapsed on a bench near the fence, gulping wa
