Adrian

I moved quickly, a phantom through the corridors, following the trail of Cain’s voice like a bloodhound on instinct. It led me to a steel-gray door tucked behind layers of concrete and ego. I turned the knob—it wasn’t locked.

Sloppy.

I stepped in.

Cain stood the moment he saw me. No words at first—just the weight of his glare.

“Lord Balshov,” he said, stiffly.

I offered him a slow, pointed smile, fangs glinting just enough to make a statement.

“Warm welcome,” I replied, already lowering myself onto the couch like I owned the place.

The two men flanking him—his Beta and Gamma, by the posture and scent—stood, bristling, hands twitching like they were deciding whether to die now or later.

I didn’t rise. Didn’t even flinch.

“I didn’t come here to fight,” I said smoothly, reaching for the whiskey and pouring myself a glass. “But I won’t hesitate to retaliate. Choose your tension wisely.”

Cain gave a tight nod, and the wolves backed off, exiting the room like shadows slipping out und

Adrian“What about Brian?” I asked, my voice cold and controlled. Too controlled.Charles froze. His expression cracked. He hadn’t expected that. He didn’t think I’d know.“He knows too much,” he said finally, the words dragging out like a confession. “Dragomir won’t let him go...”I stepped toward him, slow and deliberate. “I asked you a question. Not a theory.”Charles swallowed hard, color draining from his face. “In the basement. My house in Alpaca. Where Michael is staying. He’s there. And Michael... Michael knows.”There it was.Proof.Michael had gone beyond betrayal. He didn’t just sell out the living, he’d locked his own brother in a cage. Kept him hidden like an inconvenient truth. Knowing Brian was down there, rotting beneath his feet, while he smiled, schemed, played diplomat. He was filth. And filth needed fire.Charles, desperate now, started spilling more, names, meeting places, a few passwords he thought might save him. None of it mattered. I had what I needed.I calle

  • Fated In Darkness   224 Preserved Assets

AdrianCharles rambled about his wife, too, how she had received the treatment, how the years had peeled off her like dead skin. She looked younger now, radiant, he said. Glowing, even. He sounded proud. Like a child showing off a toy he didn't understand."And the immunosuppressant?" Dimitri asked from the shadows.Charles nodded quickly. "It regulates the mutation, lets them live longer, almost indefinitely. It relaxes the immune system, allowing the venom to wrap around the cells. That way, the immune system becomes... enhanced. They heal faster, get stronger. Unless something catastrophic happens, they live. For years.""And when they die?" I asked, stepping closer. His eyes flicked toward mine, and for a heartbeat, he forgot how to breathe.“Dragomir has people,” he said. “A network. They collect the bodies. Anyone who dies becomes part of his army, resurrected, reconditioned. He calls them ‘preserved assets.’ It doesn’t happen often. Only when there’s… poisoning, or a violent d

  • Fated In Darkness   223 The Price of Betrayal

Adrian“What’s with Calpacut?” I asked, recalling the flirty little wolf who had enjoyed needling Natalie every chance she got. The one who draped herself on Carson at balls as though she were his mate instead of just a pretty distraction.Carson’s jaw ticked. “I’m just waiting for Raven to wake and tell me what really happened,” he said finally, voice tight. We moved down the corridor toward the subcells, the air cooling as the walls thickened into stone. He kept speaking, the words tumbling out of him with the weight of suspicion he’d clearly been carrying for some time.“The day of the attack… Michelle had Raven escort her to my office. Dhampirs had come to demand Lisa be handed over, since Graham refused to pay his tribute. I remember wondering why Michelle dragged Raven with her, she didn’t belong in that room. But I let it pass.” He cast me a quick glance, something raw flickering in his eyes. “What if that was her way of showing the Dhampirs exactly who James’ daughter was? A q

  • Fated In Darkness   222 Rot in the Pack

AdrianI wanted to go to Natalie right away, to feel the calm her presence gave me, but duty chained me. Charles had to bleed his secrets before the night was over. Natalie would rest for now. Nicole’s problem…I would find another way to solve it later.I left my parents and moved down the hall toward the infirmary. The scent of blood and antiseptic lingered in the air, sterile yet sharp, a reminder that healing and suffering often walked hand in hand here. Carson sat hunched on the couch, his elbows on his knees, eyes fixed on Raven as the doctors worked around her. The moment he saw me, he straightened, tension radiating off him.“There is no venom in her system,” he said quickly, almost as if he needed to get the words out before they disappeared. “They said she’ll be fine.” His relief was naked on his face, unguarded, far too human. It struck me how much he cared, and how much that care could be used against him.“Have you called her father?” I asked. He nodded. “My father is taki

  • Fated In Darkness   221 Apocalypse in Waiting

Adrian My father’s eyes snapped to him, the weight of centuries behind his gaze. Then, with a resigned sigh, he leaned back and muttered, “I suppose Adrian has told you why we cannot go for him head-on.” Dimitri’s nod was tight, unreadable, but I knew the truth of it had shaken him. “I’ve tried to reach out to Giuseppe,” my father went on, his tone clipped, urgent now. “No response. But make no mistake, we must put Dragomir to sleep before he wakes Volodymir. If that happens…” He set his glass down with a deliberate thud, the sound carrying finality. “…we will face another war. Not a clean war, either, one with fledglings and abominations flooding the streets. They have no respect for humanity, no restraint. I have lived through such times. I will not see them rise again.” He lifted his glass once more, downing it in a single gulp. “The world will not be safe so long as Dragomir roams free,” he continued. “And gods help us all if Volodymir stirs. Having two of them awake at the sa

  • Fated In Darkness   220 Old Gods, New Wars

AdrianWe pushed the van harder than necessary and didn’t roll into the manor until three-thirty. The night still belonged to us, barely. Enough time to act.Crossing the threshold, I couldn’t help but wonder how the intervention with Natalie’s mother had gone. My parents were skilled in handling delicate truths, far more suited to that role than I ever could be. Still, part of me worried, Nicole wasn’t strong, and if she faltered, Natalie would break with her.But I didn’t have time to linger on that. Not tonight.“Milo,” I ordered the moment we entered, “fetch Arya.”He didn’t hesitate. He knew better.I had already decided, I’d lock Arya in the lower levels. Eliminating her for cozying up to Martina was the logical choice, the clean choice… but perhaps not the wise one. Many of my Dhampirs had Strigoi friends, and I hadn’t gutted them for it. Arya was different, yes, but to strike her down outright would raise questions. And questions inside my own walls were dangerous.“That quick
