“Let us help you,” Dimitri said, his voice even, calm. “We’re looking for these people too, and believe me, you’ll need all the firepower you can get. I’m sure Adrian would oblige as well.”

I shook my head without hesitation.

“I don’t work with Strigoi.”

Plain. Simple. Final.

Dimitri’s expression didn’t change, but the tone in his voice deepened, old and sharp, like iron rusting in the soul.

“You will, young man. Whether you like it or not.”

His words weren’t a threat. They were prophecy.

“There’s no guarantee we’ll find Dragomir right away,” he continued, “but if you go in alone, even with Jonathan Nightclaw’s blood in your veins, you’re not him. You’re strong, yes. But not invincible. Dragomir’s forces will tear through you and your wolves like wet parchment.”

The words stung, but they were true.

“Don’t throw away more lives than you already have,” he said, quietly. “What happened here tonight… I should demand reparations. Your assault, your losses, the chaos, it’s on you. Bu

  • Fated In Darkness   207  The Break Before the War

CarsonI remembered the day Michelle came into my office with raven. Lisa’s situation had been urgent, the Dhampir request explosive. But still… why bring Raven? Why not one of the other people? Why her? I had questioned it, but I didn’t linger on the matter because I was distracted by all that had been going on around me.My hand dragged through my hair, jaw clenched. I didn’t want to believe it. But the thought festered: Was Michelle part of this? Had she brought her along to help the Dhampir identify her? Was she in on it?“I’m with Lord Orlov and Warlock now,” I said, voice low. “They don’t have her, but they know where she might be. We’re moving to retrieve her.”Then I told him everything. Dimitri’s intel. Graham’s confession. Vincent Dragomir’s name.Silence.Then my father spoke. “I’m coming.”I started to protest, but he cut me off.“No need,” I said. “I’ll reach out to Adrian. Lord Orlov believes he’ll come. He’s been tracking this too.”“That may be,” my father replied, “b

Carson“They approached me,” Graham said, voice cracking. “The head of the Abbott family came to my house. I was about to write the parchment, finally ready to pay… but he told me there was another way.”He shifted, shoulders sagging, breath shaky.“There’s a powerful Strigoi, almost as strong as Volodymir, he said. This new force… he’s sparing all of us from the sacrifice. We’d get to keep everything. The power, the protection, without the price. All they wanted was loyalty. Support. Resources.”He looked at me, eyes pleading. “You have to understand, I was desperate. I’d do anything to get out of that bind. So I said yes.”I didn’t blink.“They wanted access to my clinics,” he continued. “My chemo centers. I said yes. That’s all they needed.”“Who are they?” I asked flatly. He swallowed. “They said Martina was part of it. One of them. If I ever got caught, I was to say she set me free. That she absolved my debt. That way, I wouldn’t be hunted. They said since she’s one of the three

Carson“What have we done to incur your wrath, Alpha Carson?” Dimitri asked, voice cool as ever. “That wall was expensive, you know. I’ll be sending an invoice.”I studied him, jaw tight. It was either arrogance or ignorance.Neither sat well with me.“I asked for two days,” I said, voice sharp, deliberate. “I promised I’d handle the Elisabeth Neeson situation. Two days. That’s all I asked.”I stepped forward, letting my presence weigh on the air between us.“And yet, yet, you sent your men onto my campus. You struck at Alpha Selene in the middle of the night. You killed my wolves. And you abducted a girl under my protection.”My voice echoed through the courtyard, bouncing off the blood-soaked stones.Dimitri didn’t even blink.“Absurd,” he said. “I did no such thing. I currently have Dhampirs out searching for Graham and Michael. I don’t have time for whatever underhanded tactics you think I’ve used.”I growled, low, guttural.“Underhanded?” The word felt like poison on my tongue. I

  • Fated In Darkness   203 Born of Blood and Fire

Carson I sprinted through the dark, wolves flanking me, silent, swift, lethal. Chaos roiled around us.Dhampirs and Strigoi blended into the smoke and shadows, their movements desperate, fractured. I grabbed a Dhampir mid-run, felt his bones give as I wrenched his shoulder out of place, spine twisting unnaturally beneath my grip, and hurled him into a charging Strigoi. They hit the ground hard. Something snapped. Something tore. Weapons gleamed in the firelight, silver blades, toxin-tipped steel, meant to kill, to cripple. Too slow. I moved like thought. Bullets missed. Blades swung wide. I ducked, parried, disarmed. One tried to gut me, I ripped the sword from his hand and shoved it through his thigh. He screamed, but I was already onto the next. I drove a headbutt into a Dhampir’s chest, crack, ribs folding inward like splintered glass. He stumbled. I kneed his face, felt his jaw shatter. He dropped in a heap of blood and bone. The courtyard was alive with screams, metal scrap

  • Fated In Darkness   202 UV Judgment

CarsonThe heavy door creaked open, and a man stepped out.At first glance, he looked human. But I wasn’t fooled. His scent was off. Too still. Too controlled.Dhampir.Born of Strigoi fathers and human mothers, they were the diluted blood, pale echoes of monsters. No true bite, no full curse. Almost like Adrian’s kind… but without the same power or prestige. Easier to kill.“Why have you come here, Alpha?” he asked, voice calm and emotionless. His eyes were dead. Cold. Like he’d trained himself to forget how to feel. They’d seen us coming.Security cameras. Monitors. Hidden eyes watching us long before we reached their gate. They knew about the UV floodlights too, which meant they knew exactly what wouldn’t hurt them.Didn’t matter.I was already planning how many of them I’d kill before the hour was up.“I want to speak with Dimitri,” I said, my voice cutting through the tension like a blade. The Dhampir didn’t move. “Take down the floodlights. Then we’ll let him know you’re here.”
