LOGINELARA
I heard the door click open and I turned, staring at Mom as she peered into my room. She walked in,
“You are studying?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you see Alistair at school today?”
I closed my book, taking off my glasses. “Yes, why didn’t you tell me?”
“You didn’t want to hear about him. Besides, I told you we should go there the other night and you just—”
“I can’t believe you actually went after all of that.”
“That’s enough, Elara. If you are not fine being with them, I get it. Hate him all you want, but you can’t expect me to follow your bidding. I can’t do everything you want.”
“How are you not mad?”
“Why should I be?”
“Your father chose to die himself. If I'm going to be mad at him.”
“Alistair could have saved him.”
“He couldn’t!” my mother snapped.
“He could!” I shot.
My mother stared at me, anger evident in her eyes. “Elara, you don’t have the right to hate the person your father sacrificed his life for. Just know that.”
In simple terms, you do not have the authority to grieve the death of your father because the person involved is the alpha prince.
The door closed behind her and I was left alone, once again, in the darkness that tried to consume me every day. I was barely keeping my head above the water and now, he came to ruin everything. Every single wall I’d tried to build was coming, crashing down.
My hands fisted beside me.
He would take the brunt of it all. After all, we had a promise to keep.
The next morning, I stepped out of my gate, just to see a familiar face waving at me.
“Hello, sweetheart.”
Alistair.
“What are you doing here?” My eyes narrowed.
“Walking you to school. What else?”
“You don’t exactly seem happy to be doing that, so why are you here?”
“You are so smart,” he smirked, pocketing his hands. He had no school bag on, his tie was practically loose, and the buttons of his inner white shirt were open.
The Alpha Prince was supposed to be a role model for the members of the pack, but Alistair looked like the kind of guy whose parents would beg their children not to emulate.
“Am I that sexy?” His voice broke my train of thoughts and I stared right back at his face.
“Roux,” I called, adjusting my glasses with my fingers. “Don’t you dare come to my house again, or else, you’ll leave here, dead.”
“Have you actually tried murdering someone before?” He suddenly asked.
I froze. “What?”
“It’s not as easy as you think it is,” he shook his head.
Our eyes locked in a fierce heated gaze and all I wanted right now was nothing more than wiping that smug look off his face. He tilted his head slightly, his eyes shifting between mine.
“You are still beautiful, Elara.”
My breath went the wrong way. A slight cough escaped from my throat and I tapped my chest slightly.
“You are crazy, Roux,” I said and walked away, stopping a cab at the junction. I got in and closed the door immediately.
“Driver, move—“
Alistair pulled the other door open and sat beside me.
“What exactly are you doing here?!” I shot.
“Your mom requested that I go to school with you. Besides, my things are in my car. I don’t have any money on me,” he tapped his pockets.
“How is that my business? Walk if you have to. Just get out.”
“Be nice, okay? We were childhood friends.”
“Alistair,” my voice went cold.
He stared at me before turning to the window.
I refuse to let him win by leaving the car for him. I grabbed my seat belt, fixing it before turning to the driver. “Let’s go.”
The cab stopped in front of the school gate and I got out, paying the driver before I walked away.
“You and Alistair came to school together?” Kris walked towards me.
“No, we did not.” I cut her off.
“Look, everyone at school is talking about it,” she muttered.
I looked around and people were staring at me, whispering. My eyes caught Alistair, walking towards the sports center opposite the classes.
“Can’t you guys fix whatever is going on between you?” She asked.
“It can’t be fixed,” I said. “We’ll always be against each other without failure.”
Class sped by and soon it was the lunch period. For no particular reason, I didn’t feel like going for lunch, but Kris grabbed my hand pulling me up.
“What’s for lunch today?”
“Soup and bread rolls,”
I rolled my eyes, sighing as we made our way to the cafeteria.
“Elara!” Alex’s voice resounded the moment we got to the cafeteria. He left his mates and walked towards Kris and me.
“Hi, Alex.”
“Hi, Kris.”
How the same sentence could have different emotions when it came to Alex and Kris was something I could never study. Sadly, Alex already made it clear that he didn’t like those older than him. And Kris…I shouldn’t break her heart by telling her that.
“You and Alistair came to school together?”
“Where did you hear that from?” My eyes narrowed.
“Rumours. Everyone is talking about it. You tried to stab him with a pen yesterday and you are coming to school with him today. Epic stories, aren’t they?”
“He forced his way into the cab,” I gritted my teeth. “It doesn’t mean anything.”
I grabbed a bread roll and dropped it on my plate, before taking the soup.
Alex and Kris did the same and we all walked to a seat at the far end of the cafeteria.
“I don’t know if this would make you feel better or angrier though,” Alex started, staring at me.
“What?”
“The marriage your mom spoke about…”
I bit my lips, shaking my head. Kris shouldn’t hear this.
“It’s not between us,” Alex didn’t get the clue. But more than that,
“It’s not? Who then? I’ve never heard of a cousin brother in your family.”
“We do have three, but they are not in this pack.”
“Then that’s….” The realization hit me. Harsh, painful stab in my chest.
I’d always known that my marriage was not something to be decided. Whether you liked it or not, both the Alpha and Beta’s children had strategic marriages. So it wasn’t a shock when mom brought up that topic. But because she had mentioned Alpha, I had thought…
My fingers tightened around the bread rolls.
Alistair? Of all people in the world?
My chair moved behind me as I suddenly stood up.
“I’m going to see the Alpha.”
“What? Elara!”
No one rejected the Alpha’s order face-to-face. But me…I would be the first.
ALISTAIRBeta Smith folded his hands, staring right at me, a smirk on his lips. “Is that the only good side of this marriage?” I asked, my brows arching. His eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?”“If Elara and I get married, will my grounding be the only good side of it?” He laughed. Almost. “Of course not. You both would have beautiful children. A son to lead the pack and a daughter as smart and fierce as Elara to showcase the pack to the whole world. If you ask me, I’ll say that is a win-win. Every single person would be happy for you, Alistair.” My teeth gritted. This…must be a joke. The smug smile remained on his face. If only he knew I wasn’t in a good mood. If he knew that, he would never open his mouth to spew out ridiculous nonsense like this on a bad day.“Since you already know where I am, leave.”“I’m to bring you back where you belong, Alistair. The Alpha’s house.”“And I know the way there,” I threw the words right back without thinking. “I don’t have to be babysat by you
ELARAMy mother had always known. The thought of that settled deep in me, causing my heart to ache. A brutal painful ache. I felt like howling. I felt like…tearing out my heart and throwing it somewhere far away from me, so this pain would just…stop.“Alistair would dedicate his whole life to protecting you. If there is something I'm sure of in this life,” her jaw tightened, “it is that Alistair would protect you all his life.”How good was he?Just how good was Alistair that he had everyone backing him up this way? Just how good?!I folded my hands into fists as I swallowed the dryness that clawed up my throat. I didn’t stay there a second longer. Instead, I forced my feet to move, walking wherever it would take me.~~~The door pulled open and Kris stared at me, her eyes wide. “Elara,” she gasped, pulling me in. “What’s going on?”“Can I,” my voice cracked, “can I stay with you tonight?”“Elara,” she pulled me in, closing the door behind me. “Is everything okay?”I gulped, forcing
CHAPTER FORTY FIVEALISTAIRShe could see through me. Of course, she could. As a child, Elara had been the closest person to me. As a matter of fact, there hadn‘t been anyone other than her. Not even Alex. The Alpha Prince of a pack gave more responsibility and drew boundaries more than a child would ever want. But someone had crossed those boundaries wearing a red gown after being lost in a cave. She had laughed with him, insulted me, and she had never been scared to speak to me.Yes, there were some privileges but still, not many people knew how to use those privileges. Elara had scored a goal in my brain without even knowing it. To her, we might just have been friends, only friends. To me, there was something deeper that I couldn’t place my finger on.Something that was keeping me from tearing myself apart. My frontal lobe had practically grown with Elara, same as my emotions, so how on earth did I even think I could lie to her? I wanted Elsie to know I would only look to one pe
ELARAI grabbed the box off my mother’s wardrobe, pulling the books out. At the bottom of the box, I froze. My father’s picture was right there, staring back at me.His hands were wrapped tightly around my legs as he held me up on his neck, a large smile on his face. It wasn’t forced. Even if I was just a child, I had known that the love my father had for me had never been forced. He was always excited to have me in his arms, to carry me, to go out with me. He played with me almost everyday and never let me be by myself. The work of a beta was totally serious and demanded most of his time, but father always found a way to create time for me. He always did that. But on that day…my hands tightened as I took the picture, running my hand over it. I missed him. I missed him so much that I felt my throat close. Then my eyes moved. Beneath the photograph, a small jotter stared right back at me. I picked it up, pulling the lock off it. My father’s handwriting was written boldly in it.Words
ALISTAIRCall me stupid for agreeing to Elara's terms and conditions even when I knew how dangerous what we were getting into was. Whoever was behind the rogues wouldn’t take it easy the moment they found out we were investigating them. I knew that, yet I was letting Elara join the game. There was only one thing I could hope for, that she would never find whatever she thinks she might have to find. Or that we find it before her every single time.As I walked out of the cafeteria, Alex rushed after me, grabbing my arm. “What is going on?”We hadn’t had a discussion about whatever he must have heard that day while Elsie and I talked and I hadn’t asked. In me, I don’t think there was any more energy left to use to protect the truth.“She wants to investigate the rogues with me,” I shrugged.“But you can’t let her do that. It’s dangerous. What if she becomes a target because of you?” his brows notched up. “First, she patched you up in that forest, followed you to Silver Crest, and is now
ELARAKris and Alex stared at me from their table, their eyes narrowed tightly, probably wondering why I hadn’t come to sit with them at our usual lunch table. My eyes peeled away from them as the cafeteria door opened. I had thought it was Alistair, but it was Elsie. Whispers shot across the room almost immediately.“She’s so pretty.”“Did you see her and Alistair under the staircase earlier? She was so gorgeous with him.”“I feel like they are the perfect match. Besides, she’s an alpha princess. It brings a connection with both packs.”My nose almost flared from their comments. Elsie was pretty no doubt but what made them think she and Alistair were the perfect match just because they stood beside each other. I stood beside Alistair so many times and—Elara, what are you thinking!I forced my eyes away from Elsie back to the seat opposite me, I froze.Alistair sat there, his head lazily on his palm as he stared squarely at me.I blinked. “When…did you get here?”“I wonder,” he said
ALISTAIR She laughed. She actually laughed. My father would force a marriage between us. Elara would put a sword to my neck. Kai would never stop talking in my head. But nothing had ever irritated me more than her laughter in this situation. Besides, ‘I have a crush on Alistair,’ was the most r
ELARA“Miss Vance?” The guard looked shocked to see me. It’s been five years since I set foot into the Roux’s mansion. And it still looked the same as it was.“I’m here to meet with the Alpha,”“He’s at the pack house for a meeting currently. However, he will soon return,” he said.“How soon?”“In
ALISTAIRI heard the door close with a loud bang as Elara exited the training room. It’s been five years, five years, and Elara Vance still hadn’t learned how to miss. She still aimed for the kill.I had prepared myself for her hatred. What I had not prepared myself for was how much it would feel l
ELARA VANCE“Alpha Lance wants you to get married,” my mother suddenly said at dinner. My eyes narrowed slightly as I looked up from my food. “Why? To whom?”She cleared her throat softly, “How about we go there tonight after dinner? He’s going to send a driver to pick us up. We can talk more about
