Chapter 7

作者: Little brat
On the streets of Alpsland, Florence held Caesar's arm excitedly as they lingered in a luxury watch store. She pointed at a limited-edition watch in the display window, her voice soft and sweet.

"Caesar, this watch face is so special!"

Caesar followed her gaze and nodded. He then waved to the salesperson. "Wrap it up."

Florence went up on her toes and kissed his cheek. "You're the best!"

Caesar smiled and patted her head, but his eyes drifted for a moment.

The way she leaned on him, the way her face lit up at a gift, that bright sparkle in her eyes, it all looked almost exactly like Ivy used to. Ivy had been cautious and shy too back then, overwhelmed by how much he spoiled her.

They really were alike.

Their eyes, their expressions, even their little habits.

He saw Florence's face in the sunlight and got lost in it for a second.

"Caesar, why are you spacing out? Let's go check out that shop!" Florence shook his arm and dragged him toward the next boutique shop.

Meanwhile, Ivy's life slowly took on a new rhythm in Harborton.Work was still at the center of everything. Under her guidance, her team sorted things out in an efficient manner and finished some tough projects without a hitch. The promotion and the raise followed as a matter of course. On weekends, she wandered through art museums or met new friends to try different kinds of food. She even learned to cook a few simple dishes that turned out surprisingly well. She rarely thought of Caesar now, only once in a while. When a piece of financial news about the Shepherd Group flashed by, her gaze paused for a few seconds before she swiped it away.He seemed to be following some silent agreement. He never showed up and never tried to contact her. That was a relief for her. She even began to think that maybe he really had let go.Back in Sidonia, Caesar grew even quieter than before. Work became his only refuge; he threw himself into it as a kind of self-punishment.He seldom went bac

  • Feather Drifting in the Wind   Chapter 23

Ivy went back to her apartment, and her mind was strangely calm. She locked the door, left the main lights off, and switched on only a floor lamp. Soft yellow light brightened the small place she hadn't lived in for long. She walked to the window and looked at the streets.A few days earlier, her boss had called her into his office. It wasn't because she had made another mistake at work, but to give her an unexpected choice."The Harborton branch in the Far Southeast Region needs someone to take charge. Business there is growing fast, but the team needs restructuring. It will be a major challenge."He watched her, his gaze sharp. "Someone on the board recommended you. Based on what you did on the merger, and seeing that you seem to need a change of scenery..." His eyes turned toward the windows that looked down on the street.Ivy understood at once.Caesar's constant harassment had finally reached upper management. This opportunity for a transfer was both recognition and a w

Caesar waited outside the office building as usual. By now, he had almost grown used to this kind of hopeless waiting.Every time Ivy appeared, all she ever left him with was her back as she walked away. But today felt different. When Ivy walked out, she didn't head straight for the subway like she always did. She stopped in front of him.Caesar’s heart skipped so high he almost thought he was imagining it."Let’s have dinner." Ivy’s voice was calm and steady, impossible to read. "The Calabrian place up ahead."Joyful disbelief washed over him. He fumbled, and even his tongue got clumsy. "Okay, okay, dinner. I know that place. Wait for me, I'll be right back."He ran back to his apartment and dug through a cabinet with shaking hands until he found the velvet ring box.She was finally willing to give him a chance. She had softened. All his effort had been worth it. It was right for him to persevere. The restaurant was quiet, the lighting warm and soft.Caesar watched Ivy acros

After he left the hospital, Caesar chose to remember only Ivy’s last soft sigh and stubbornly took it as a sign she had softened.A test. This had to be her final test. She just needed time. She needed more proof that he meant it.He pulled himself together, more driven than before. He handed off most of the work back home that needed him in person and handled what he could remotely. Meanwhile, he treated winning Ivy back as his only real job.The first time, he waited outside her office with a huge bouquet of fresh roses in his arms. When Ivy walked out, her eyes moved over to him and the armful of scarlet roses. Her expression did not change. She didn't slow down. She walked straight toward the subway entrance. He hurried after her with the bouquet. She quickened her pace and merged into the crowd, then disappeared down into the underground passage.Caesar stood there with the bouquet, stunned.-The tenth time, Caesar somehow got hold of a key to her apartment. While sh

Caesar forced his heavy eyelids open.Above him was an unfamiliar white ceiling. An IV bottle hung on a stand, fluid dripping slowly. He stared for a few seconds before it hit him. He was in the hospital. The hangover made his head feel like it was splitting. His stomach burned and churned. His fingers twitched with instinct and touched warm skin.He suddenly turned his head to the side. Ivy was sitting in a chair by the bed, head bent over her phone, her face calm.A wave of elation swept over him.He knew it. He still had a place in her heart. She couldn't bear to leave him. She saw him collapse, worried about him, and came anyway."Ivy." His voice was hoarse, shaking with excitement he could not hide. He immediately tried to catch her hand. "You came. I knew you still cared about me. You still hold me dear, right?"Ivy pulled her hand away before he could touch her. She set her phone down, picked up a glass of warm water from the bedside table, and held it out to him, her fa

The board passed the final merger proposal unanimously, and the other company had given its initial approval as well. All that remained were the detailed negotiations."Excellent work, Ivy." Her usually stern Weisslandic boss actually smiled and gave her shoulder a firm pat. "We are having a celebration dinner tonight, and we're going to drink properly."The entire project team erupted in cheers that almost rang through the entire building.Everyone had been under heavy stress for these past weeks, and that moment of joy and success washed away all their exhaustion. Her colleagues crowded around Ivy, talking over one another about where to go as they headed downstairs excitedly.Outside the building, the cold wind made Ivy hunch her shoulders with a relaxed smile still on her face. She deliberately ignored the passionate gaze from a figure not far away.Caesar was there again. When he saw Ivy surrounded by people and smiling so brightly, he froze. He took half a step forward, th
