“You’re late,” Master Rowan barked as Claire stepped into the lab at dawn.

“I didn’t know apprentices were paid to sleep.”

He glanced at her cane. “You don’t get points for sass when you can’t even stand straight.”

“I stood long enough to save your assistant.”

Rowan huffed. “Begin sterilizing the extraction vials. Bare hands. If you break even one, you’re out.”

Claire rolled up her sleeves. “Understood.”

The lab smelled of moss, acid, and burning alcohol. Glass tubes were stacked like bones. Every surface gleamed with a dangerous kind of cleanliness—one mistake away from explosion.

“Use the left sink,” Rowan snapped. “Right one’s for mutagens.”

Claire nodded. “Noted.”

For three hours, no words passed between them. Only the hiss of steam, clink of glass, the scrape of brushes over dried resin.

Finally, Rowan set down a dropper. “Why did you shave your head?”

“Hair gets in the way.”

“You didn’t want to be recognized?”

Claire didn’t look up. “I didn’

Six months later, a new flag flew over the ridge where no crest had dared to stand. It was white. Stitched with a thread of silver, braided from three herbs: moon-vine, red fennel, and blue sage.No Pack emblem. No bloodline. Just medicine. The Moon-Vine Institute had become its own territory. And Claire Sepharine Nightwind was its director.---The morning of the inauguration, the sun spilled over the rebuilt stonework. Locals hung garlands. Apprentices scrubbed the front steps until they shone.Inside the hall, Leif paced. “You still haven’t written your speech.”Claire adjusted her collar. “I’m not making one.”He blinked. “You’re not?”She shook her head. “I’m going to say one sentence. That’s all it needs.”“What if they want more?”“They won’t,” she said. “They’ll see what I’ve built.”---Delegations arrived before noon.Snow Mountain sent their senior medic, bowing without words.Rogue clans arrived on horseback, bringing native s

“First stop: Hollow Valley,” Leif said, pointing at the map spread across the worktable. “Last week they didn’t even have clean gauze.”Claire tapped a route. “Send two kits, one apprentice, and moon-vine starter cultures. They’ll need to grow their own supply by winter.”He nodded. “And the old rogue den in Rust Gorge?”“Take guards—but send them,” she said. “If they come to the door wounded, they’re patients first.”“Even if they don’t follow the Code?”Claire looked up. “The Code didn’t follow me when I was dying in a hospital bed.”Leif lowered his voice. “You sound more like a general than a medic.”“I’m both,” she said. “Whether the Council likes it or not.”---A week later, the caravan reached the edge of the former war zone.Claire stepped down from the wagon, cloak dusted with sand. Children watched her from behind rubble—wide-eyed, bone-thin, silent.Edward had written once about this place: *They have bones in their cupboards and blood in th

“You don’t have to see me off.”Claire turned from the gatehouse window. Edward stood beside the wagons, dressed in a travel coat, the Moon-Vine Institute crest stitched subtly over his chest.“I’m not here to stop you,” she said.He smiled. “That’s exactly why I hoped you’d come.”The sun had barely broken over the treeline. Carriages waited at the east gate, wheels gleaming with frost. Behind them, a line of wagons carried glassware, centrifuges, soil samples. A mobile clinic, ready to cross three territories in search of underserved villages.Claire approached slowly.“You have everything?” she asked.“Enough to build something that matters.”She nodded.Edward reached into his coat and pulled out a sealed envelope.“I left instructions,” he said. “If I don’t return in a year, someone else will take over the eastern leg. The plan survives even if I don’t.”“You’ll return.”He met her eyes. “And if I do… and you’re still here—”“I’ll still be bu

“Festival night. Again.”Claire stood at the edge of the town square, arms folded. The lanterns floated overhead like fireflies caught in suspended time. Children laughed. Vendors passed out candied roots.Edward stepped beside her, holding two cups of spiced tea. “This used to be the plague memorial. Now it’s a harvest celebration.”Claire took the tea. “Funny how quickly people turn grief into tradition.”“Survival demands it,” Edward said. “Pain that lingers too long becomes poison.”She didn’t argue. The fireworks began, streaking gold and green across the sky.In the crowd, Jasper stood alone, hands behind his back, gaze locked on the horizon.Claire noticed. Of course she did.Edward followed her eyes. “Do you want me to disappear for a while?”“No,” she said quietly. “You don’t have to move for him.”“I would,” he said. “But I won’t ask you to choose in a moment like this.”Claire turned to face him. “Why not?”“Because tonight’s about you.

“You don’t have to do this.”Claire stood on the clinic roof, surveying the wreckage below—blackened beams, scorched beds, soil where wild herbs had once grown.Leif held a box of replacement tools. “You’re Chief Medic. Delegate.”She took the box from him. “And if I don’t know what it feels like to lift the pieces, how will I know what they’re worth?”He sighed. “Just don’t dislocate your shoulder again.”Claire smirked. “That was one time.”---Across the grounds, soldiers cleared debris while healers laid new irrigation lines. The Moon-Vine Institute was a battlefield of progress—charred, but alive.Jasper knelt beside a broken wall, hauling bricks into a wheelbarrow. His hands were blistered, sleeves rolled. No entourage, no fanfare.Claire passed him without comment. He stood. “You’re ignoring me.”“No,” she said. “I’m choosing not to interrupt your work.”He followed her. “I wanted to talk.”Claire stopped beside a sapling she’d planted that

“She’s gone.”Edward dropped the morning report onto Claire’s desk. “Elodie disappeared from her holding suite just after midnight.”Claire didn’t look up from the microscope. “She was under surveillance.”“Guard was found unconscious. No signs of forced entry.”Claire calmly adjusted the focus. “She was always good at slipping past rules.”“She wasn’t alone.”Claire finally looked up. “Who?”Edward handed her a second sheet. “Beta Graves.”Claire’s eyes darkened. “He was stripped of his title two years ago.”“And bitter ever since.”Edward lowered his voice. “They hit the vault.”Claire stood, voice sharp. “Which vault?”“The plague strain. The unstable batch.”For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Claire said quietly, “They’re going to weaponize it.”---That night, flames erupted near the eastern clinic wing.Sirens howled.Claire ran into the chaos, wind stinging her face, lab coat flaring like a banner.Smoke curled towa
