Chapter 2

Author: Grass Prince
Clark came back to our apartment early the next morning.

He stopped in front of the mirror to straighten his tie, then leaned down and kissed my forehead.

"Yvonne, I have an important investor meeting today. I might be home late, so go to bed early. Don't wait for me."

He looked so sincere that if I hadn't seen everything with my own eyes the night before, I probably would have believed in his lies again.

"Okay. Good luck with work." I forced a perfect smile.

As soon as he left, I took an old contract from the drawer and crossed the street to Bellmont Heights.

The door opened after I rang the bell three times.

Anya leaned lazily against the doorframe in a dark green silk nightgown.

I recognized it immediately. It was a limited-edition piece from a luxury brand.

I had kept it in my shopping cart for ages last month, but didn't buy it because a thousand dollars seemed too expensive.

At the time, Clark had even said thoughtfully, "Yvonne, once we're married, I'll buy as many as you want."

But now, another woman was wearing it.

"Who are you looking for?" Anya asked, looking me up and down suspiciously.

I lowered my head and pretended to be meek. "Hello. I'm Mr. Zimmer's new assistant. I have an urgent document that needs his signature."

The suspicion in her eyes faded, replaced by a knowing look.

She deliberately brushed her hair back and acted like she was in charge. "He just left. Give the documents to me. I'll have him sign it when he gets back."

"Well…" I hesitated. "But this document concerns the investment for Project Oasis."

As soon as she heard the project's name, Anya smiled even more smugly.

"Why are you so worried? Clark's net worth is about to double. Once he gets Project Oasis' core AI, the company will be able to secure hundreds of thousands of dollars in venture capital."

My hand clenched at my side, and my nails dug deep into my palm.

Project Oasis was something my team and I had spent two full years developing.

For the past month, Clark had been trying to persuade me every day.

"Yvonne, what's mine will be yours once we're married. Put the project under my name. It'll be easier to attract investors through the company. I'm doing this for our future."

So this was what he meant by our future. He wanted to use the project I had spent two years developing to support his mistress.

When I said nothing, Anya assumed she had intimated me and became even more open about showing off.

She spoke in a coy tone. "Clark is just too worried about me. Last month, I had a fever in the middle of the night while he was away on a business trip in a neighboring city.

"It was raining heavily, but he drove all the way back to stay with me. I couldn't stop him."

My mind reeled.

Was it that heavy rain last month?

That day was my seventh anniversary with Clark.

I had prepared all his favorite dishes and waited until 2:00 am.

In the end, all I got was a cold, dismissive text. "Yvonne, my car broke down on the highway. The rain is too heavy, so I can't make it home tonight. Go to sleep. Don't wait for me."

I was worried about him being outside in the cold and barely slept that night.

It turned out he was in another woman's bed, wrapped up with her.

"He paid the entire down payment for this place, and he put only my name on it," Anya said smugly.

Her words continued to hurt me.

I looked at her smug face and felt sick.

I had been saving for the down payment for our future home, while he had never put a single cent into our joint account.

So he had used some of the money to buy an apartment for his mistress.

I held back my anger and forced a stiff smile. "I won't keep you, then. I hope you two are happy together."

The moment I turned around, my tears finally fell.

Clark was so cruel.

Three months later, the court handed down its verdict.Clark was sentenced to seven years in prison for multiple offenses. He was ordered to repay all the money he had taken from me.The property at Bellmont was seized and sold at auction, and every cent from the sale was returned to my account. On the day of the verdict, Clark cried bitterly from the defendant's seat.He kept looking back toward the gallery, hoping to see me there. But I didn't go.I was at Evercrest Capital's press conference. I was there as the chief technical officer and co-founder of Project Oasis to show media from around the world our latest AI core algorithms. As for those horrible people and everything that happened, I had cut them completely out of my life.Later, I occasionally heard what had happened to them through other people's gossip. After Anya returned home, she failed to recover properly after losing the baby and was left with health problems. She was also used to spending freely. She soon

The mess at Clark's engagement party spread quickly through the industry. He had become a complete laughingstock among his peers.Evercrest Capital's legal team moved fast. Early the next morning, Clark's company received both a lawyer's letter and a court summons. One was a lawsuit over the unauthorized use of Project Oasis' core patent. The other was a notice that my lawsuit against him for illegally taking 300 thousand dollars of my personal property had been accepted by the court.I stood in Evercrest Capital's bright, spacious top-floor office and looked down at the traffic moving through the city.My phone kept buzzing with updates from my former coworker, Cody."Yvonne, you're amazing! Mr. Wane showed up at the company this morning with a group of people and trashed Clark's office!""Mr. Wane said Clark was suspected of business fraud. He pulled all his investment plans and is also suing Clark for the money he lost on the initial due diligence!""The company accounts ha

After being slapped in front of everyone, Clark completely lost control. He held his cheek and glared at me with pure hatred. "Yvonne, do you really think you can win this way? Mr. Wane is here today. The second his funding comes through, I'll throw that sorry amount right back in your face!"Then he turned to Gilbert, who was sitting at the head of the table, his expression grim."Gilbert!" Anya cried as she ran to him for help.Gilbert stood up, straightened his suit, and walked over to me with the arrogance of a man used to being in charge."Young lady, don't push things too far. Clark is someone I've chosen to back, and his Project Oasis is valued at over ten million dollars. You're only causing trouble here because you think you're not getting paid enough."Gilbert pulled out a check, quickly wrote down an amount, and held it out to me."Here's one million dollars. Take the money and sign the project transfer agreement. Then we'll forget this ever happened. Otherwise, I h

Looking at Clark's smug, superior expression made me sick.I ignored his outstretched hand and took a document from the lawyer behind me. Then I threw it at Clark's chest. The papers scattered, and several bank statements bearing the bank's official stamp fell to the floor."You think I care about the bigger picture?" I scoffed. "Clark, are you delusional? I'm here today to make you pay."Clark froze and looked down at the papers on the floor.Anya immediately gathered up her engagement gown and rushed over to stand in front of Clark. She pointed at me and screamed, "Yvonne, what the hell are you doing? This is my engagement party with Clark. How dare you come here to make a scene! Where's security? Throw her out!"Darlene also pushed through the crowd, waving her arms and reaching out to scratch my face. "You shameless bitch! I warned you not to come here and ruin this day. How dare you show up and wreck Clark's engagement party!"The lawyer behind me immediately stepped for

Three days later, Clark and Anya's engagement party went ahead as planned. It was still held at the five-star hotel I had settled on after visiting and comparing more than a dozen places. The theme was still the starry-night design I had spent three sleepless nights creating.Even the pair of crystal swans at the entrance were the ones I had personally supervised at the factory. That day, the sign between the swans clearly read, "Congratulations to Mr. Clark Zimmer and Ms. Anya Quinn on Their Engagement."That morning, I was still waiting outside the intensive care unit for news about Grandma when Darlene sent me a voice message."Yvonne, today is a big day for Clark and Anya. Don't come and ruin it. Anya is pregnant, so she can't handle any stress."Also, Clark said he can cover Martha's medical bills for now. But you need to sign that project transfer agreement and mail it over right away."You should learn when to back off. Don't make this harder than it needs to be."I fel

Grandma's surgery went well, but she developed an infection afterward and was moved to the intensive care unit. The medical bills were piling up fast, and the money I had borrowed wouldn't last more than a few days. I had to get back what belonged to me.The next day, I made myself go back to the office. I planned to copy the core code and patent application for Project Oasis. But when I keyed in my password, a message popped up on the screen saying I didn't have permission.Clark had changed my password and locked me out of my computer. He was the only one after Project Oasis, and after what happened at the hospital yesterday, he must have taken action in a panic."Yvonne, you actually had the nerve to come back to the office?" Cody Smith, one of the programmers on my team, walked over with a cup of coffee and looked at me with open contempt."Mr. Zimmer said you've been suspended for letting your personal issues affect your work. He's taking over Project Oasis himself."I l
